The Successor of Windows Vista and Longhorn

A man by the name of James Kyton has posted some details about the successors of Windows Vista and Longhorn. (Longhorn as in the new Server, not the codename for Vista.) The new desktop OS is currently codenamed Vienna and the new Server OS is codenamed Fiji. This should be one hell of an interesting read, especially since we’re talking about the next-next-generation OS. Apparently voice recognition will be big, no, huge in the future partially replacing the mouse and keyboard. Windows Vista already has better voice recognition than anything we’ve seen in XP and nextgen games like Unreal Tournament 2007 (or any other Unreal 3 Engine powered game that uses the new voice recognition system) will also make heavy use of voice recognition, like you can give your AI teammates commands by simply telling them what to do.

Windows Fiji

  • The UI will be updated with things that were originally promised for Vista, along with a more powerful sidebar, which will be more than just a dock for widgets (a.k.a. gadgets)
  • .Net Framework will be updated to 3.5 (or maybe even 4)
  • WinFS will be applied over NTFS to give us Virtual Folders (or maybe just Saved Searches)
  • All bundled application will be updated to newer versions
  • Tighter integration with Windows Live. Probably through ‘Codename Nemo’, a media center application thats integrated with Messenger, Spaces, and probably lots of other Windows Live Services.
  • We might see Monaco, a music authoring tool, similar to Apple’s Garageband.
  • Default playback of HD-DVD (maybe even Blu-ray), Vista currently identifies these disks but cannot play them without an external decoder.
  • A more advanced Speech Recognition
  • NGSCB will be implemented to make the system more secure.
  • New themes, icons, wallpapers, games, and minor tweaks to almost everything.

Although Fiji doesn’t sound too exciting yet, new features are bound to be added. Still, it might just be a way to keep us quiet while they work on Vienna.

Windows Vienna (formerly Blackcomb) will be a huge departure from current incarnations of Windows, Similar to the transition from OS8-9 to OSX. It will break compatibility with all applications, but the newer, more flexible, richer and secure platform will be incentive enough for applications to be re-written for Vienna.

Windows Vienna

  • The current interface will be completely stripped, no more explorer shells, and taskbars. No start menu. Probably no toolbars, or menus (which already started with Vista).
  • Speech Recognition will become a major input device (though it will not replace the keyboard and mouse) and will be supported by most third party applications.
  • Many projects from Microsoft’s R&D will come into play, especially from their VIBE research center. A pie-menu is rumored to be used.
  • A new version of NTFS wrapped in a more powerful WinFS. No more drives, or files/folders location to worry about. File Management will be done through applications, which will automatically index and sort the files they support.
  • Even bundled applications will evolve a lot (compare WMP6 with WMP11).
  • Search will part a huge part in Vienna (like it does in the control panel of Vienna)
  • Applications with non-managed code will run in a sandbox mode (like IE7 does in Vista), so that security exploits in a single application doesn’t affect the entire OS.

Facts are hard to come by about Windows Vienna but it has 15 years of R&D to borrow from, and one thing is for certain, Vienna won’t be just an operating system, but a new generation in computing.

i cant see voice recognition taking off, what about coders? What about all kinds of things? I bet i can type way quicker than any voice recognition software can.

Cant see that working in a busy office environment too well with people talking on the phone AND to their computers lol.

Voice recognition is already going to be better in Vista so just imagine what Vienna could do. I bet I can talk way faster then anyone in the world will ever type, and if Vienna’s voice recognition is capable of understanding everything I say: Good bye keyboard. I’d still use the mouse and keyboard for games. But for text, I’d just use my microphone. Shit, I’d be all relaxed, drinking and eating behind my computer while telling my computer what to do. Extreme laziness, here we come!

Apps will evolve like wmp6 to wmp11? Simple easy to use version 6 just bloated, got lots of DRM shit inside, got bigger, slower and harder to use. Fuck them if they want to “improve” all applications this way.

I think you got it wrong, from the source that you linked it says that Fiji i going to be “Vista R2″ not the next server OS.

This sounds like straight from the Microsoft Advertising Department – it would be nice to be more critical.

Old news I’m afraid. Windows Vienna is the new codename for Blackcomb. Blackcomb has been known about for ages (since February 2000). We were supposed to Blackcomb but instead got an intermediatory operating system called Vista. In January 2006 Blackcomb was renamed Vienna. Blackcomb was supposed to be the revolutionary OS everyone wanted and got put back and put back until the last known release date was 2011. You should expect Vienna in 2011. Have a happy 5 years of Vista.

I dunno I can’t see Vienna being the next generation of operating systems. Voice Recognition has a very very long way to go before it can be used as a primary form of navigation around an OS.

As for me, Windows 2000 is my stopping point of using windows. I don’t play many games but use it because the programs I love use it. After Win2k becomes obsolete I will migrate to Linux, or something else if it’s available by then. It will take a lot of getting used to but I can finally rid myself of the M$ demons that live in my box.

Hopefully suitable stand-ins for the programs I use will be available to said OS as well.

Why even bother with new OS’s? The current OS’s are more than adequate for anything we need.
Maybe if they invented some new technology like monitors that could project images in midair, or goggles that sense head movement and alter the image accordingly, or some other shit like that then we would have need of a new operating system that would accomidate these things. But as it stands now, new OS’s are just a waste of money.

yes, i want a new input system with the new os. i’ll be like really old by that time. so, keyboard and mouse won’t cut it for us old folks. make it like the computer interaction in minority report. you move stuff on the computer with your hands (replacing the mouse) and command with your voice (replacing keyboard). pc gaming would probably controlled with your hands. imagine playing an rts game and selecting the troops with your hands. too cool.

  15. January 3rd, 2007 | 01:40

@Piss: How will the Minority Report way of using your entire arm, hand and all individual fingers be better for older people when compared to a simple mouse? :P

I hate talking to the computer. I’ve already tried out some very advanced speech recognition programs like Dragon Naturally Speaking, which is intelligent enough to remove pauses like “er..” or “uhm..” etc, and it doesn’t even require training. But I unistalled it in a week. Why? The novelty wore off, and it was a tad too irritating and tiresome “talking” to my computer. I work on the PC all day long, but I definately can’t talk all day long. Maybe its better suited to someone who’s into talking, like say commentators or call center guys.

hmm… imagin your GF’s response. ah no hunny i didnt hear you, i was talking to the comp..

    or

you busy talking to your comp and you get a phonoe call.. ring ring.. talk talk talk.. back to comp.. omg a mess..

    or

your a tech guy that is talking to someone while trying to get the system to stop hanging all the time….

talk to your shit box.. hmm sounds interesting but only if your alone i would say.. + since about 2002 a company has been sellign voice comanded software the takes 90% of your system under its control and is fully voice activated.. horribly enuf you generaly have to talk clearly as if your talking to a child+++ the 2.5 hour trainign session to get the dam thing working was a night-mare…

originaly intended for ppl with disabilities or for a lazy ass like me that cbf doing anything.. huge prob was you need a 100+$ mic/headphones and a silent room + uncompatible wiht any games…
