The Sims sold 100 million units, sequel announced

The best-selling PC game franchise of all time just got a bit more best-selling. EA announced today that The Sims series has now sold 100 million copies worldwide since it launched in 2000. Since the first game, the series has been translated into 22 different languages and sold in 60 countries around the world. According to the New York Times, the franchise has generated over $4 billion for its publisher, Electronic Arts–or around $500 million per year. The first Sims game was the brainchild of celebrated game developer Will Wright, and was released for the PC on EA’s Maxis label just over eight years ago. Dozens of expansion packs, spin-offs, and console ports followed, and this trend continued after the launch of The Sims 2 in 2004.

The launch of The Sims 3, recently announced for 2009, will let a new generation of virtual humans wander around their neighbourhoods freely for the first time. The virtual-life sim lets players customise a sim or group of sims and direct their day-to-day lives, including building and decorating their houses, choosing their career paths, and managing their relationships with others. Each month, The Sims 2 Web site has over 4.3 million unique visitors, who have downloaded more than 70 million user-created items, including furniture, outfits, and sims themselves. The game has also been a surprise hit on YouTube, where gamers have posted some 100,000 movies showing their sims.

    the only sims i actually liked was the first sims i ever played, on a maxis demo disc that came with my compaq system in the 90’s. That was the best of the sims, now it is just a joke. I don’t see why people bother with it, it hasn’t been good in years. Iloved casuing earthquakes and having hurricanes then trying to repair it.

    “The best-selling PC game franchise of all time..”

    News like this makes me sad… who knew that there were so many ass blankets in the world.. this people give real pc gamers a bad name and is ruining our market.

    Who is the audience for a brain dead product like this anyway?

  6. NuZZ
    April 17th, 2008 | 12:47

    To all who do not know, the audience is not for your typical “gamer”, but more so a casual gamer, or people who do not consider themselves gamers.
    Eg. 30-40yr old females?

    And no, this is not harming the PC gaming industry, to all of those wibbles whom are too ignorant to theorize it.

    Sims is seriously the biggest joke ever i played for a while to try to understand why ppl like it and discovered its just girls that like the sims….girls loves the sims their addicted to it like us guys are addicted to Halo and gtaIV, girls rather watch ppl live their lives and the drama of it rather then the us who like to kill and blow sh!t up :P

    Many girls are addicted to this game. My 14-year old niece has bought this game along with 6 expansion packs. Most boys get tired of The Sims after playing it a couple of times but it really has a sticky effect on girls.

    April 17th, 2008 | 13:53

    ahahahaha, I love this. With all the Sims criticism because it’s so popular and people saying how it’s crap I seriously doubt 100 million people each bought the game once and thought how they regretted it, more like people carried on buying because they enjoyed it. You know because you play a game if you enjoy it rather than not play a game because it’s not cool!!

    @15

    The game was originally designed as a therapeutic exercise to help certain individuals learn and practice social skills and life building scenarios. Example: If you screw up and lie to your friends in “the game” they don’t like you anymore in the game. Just like in real life, there are consequences to all of your actions. The problem is, if you aren’t aren’t suffering from an emotional disconnect with society you soon will be if all you do is play this game. Simulations of life are of no real use, except as a training tool. In the socialization training simulations, if your character doesn’t bathe regularly the program remembers this and your character (you in the game) will be avoided by or commented on by other characters generated by the program and therefore learn to bathe regularly. The same with cleaning your house to avoid vermin, or being rude, etc. when trying to get a job.

    So why are people interested in buying this? I’m guessing they feel more in control of their lives when they “create” the universe they spend most of their time in. And reality, unfortunately, comes with the painful reminder that when you hurt someone or someone hurts you, you can’t just change the scenario and start over because it didn’t work out the way you thought it would; the pain doesn’t end when you want it too and life doesn’t really give you do-overs.

    Reality TV is popular too. That doesn’t mean it’s good or that the people who watch it aren’t idiots.

    Sims 3 features an open world where all the houses advance in time simultaneously and lots as you know them disappear, along with the mood meters. They’re replaced with general buffs and debuffs, say your Sim is elated because she just had a kid or in discomfort because he really needs to pee. These will affect behavior. Oh and the X points in neatness are replaced with traits you select. Think of personals in the newspaper, athletic, nerdy etc. I don’t really like the idea, everyone’s gonna die of old age really quickly and you can’t stop it with all the youth elixir in the world

    Whether you like the game or not is irrelevant, I don’t like sports games but I don’t call the people playing them dumb jock wannabes either or call Call of Duty players sad social rejects

    playing sims2 as a game is for girls

    but using it as a platform to create organic mindblowing architectural sightseeings is great for everyone else

    of course there is a learning curve to do so

    i also use it to test my beta3d-models in a real-time-environment on different cpu-capacities without having to rig everything

    There’s nothing wrong with The Sims. Just because it doesn’t appeal to the hardcore gamers why play Crysis and went to a store at midnight to buy Halo and play it for the next 12 hours doesn’t mean it doesn’t appeal to other people.

  29. Protoculture
    April 18th, 2008 | 00:29

    I agree this game won’t harm the industry because its target market is totally different. It’s like saying Sims is McD and Crysis is Friday’s.

    April 18th, 2008 | 01:41

    First off if you people really think GTA 4 will do better then the Sims has… well i suppose i dont really need to comment on it.. One of the biggest Reasons the sims has sold so much is because of the type of people who play it. Most people who play the sims buy their copies and wouldnt know how or wouldnt want to pirate a game.

  31. Father Time
    April 18th, 2008 | 01:45

    @5

    Also these games dont ruin the market us actually pirating games are. We put the Titan Quest people out of business already. and more and more Games are just going to Consol first. We will see this happen more and more and the quality of the games will decrease from the crap controls ported over just like on Assassins Creed.

    Sims…ha…what a joke…
    Make a news report when EA releases the 100th Sims expansion pack…I mean…this is completely insane. Sims is but the cash cow for EA, and they keep making expansion packs that add something like “Kitchens and Bathrooms” for 20 bucks???!!! That’s a damn ripoff on EA’s part. I don’t like Sims, and although there are people who ACTUALLY like Sims…I don’t like those people…so whatever…back to Crysis…

    I love the sims. I guess I find it relaxing and mindless. This is just what I want after a hard day. I do not think people who play sims are dumb at all. People want games for different reasons. Some like to make up stories or romances etc. This is their way of Gaming. It is fun for some, not all. Its the ones who cannot understand this who think simmers are dumb.
