The Simpsons make fun of Apple

No one is safe from satire on The Simpsons. The animated series, which just began its 20th season, has lampooned just about every large company, celebrity and pretty much every aspect of pop culture. Last night’s episode featured a six minute segment that parodied Apple Inc. at the start of the show. In Episode 7 the Simpsons travel to the Springfield Mall to discover that a giant “Mapple” Store has been erected inside. The massive glass cube structure looks like a spitting image of the 5th Avenue Apple Store in New York. Lisa Simpson walks inside and notes that “it’s so sterile!” and the one-liners go from there.

The mock store is loaded with MyPods, MyPhones, a Brainiac Bar and the MyCube, a machine “fueled by dreams and powered by imagination.” The cube glows to confirm that it’s off. Its a very good natured jab at Cupertino and there’s something funny in it for just about everyone. You can watch the complete episode at Fox on Demand (with commercials), it starts at about 02:00 or download it from links under our post. Optionally the video is also on YouTube (parts 1, 2) but it’s getting slow and probably won’t be up for long.

There’s something funny about how unfunny the Simpsons have become.
And they think they’re in a position to take the piss out of people ?
    ouch.

That was Hilarious, sad too, but still a great mock of how corporations treat us now days. If you are over 25, have been working a while, and have a bank account, you should be able to identify with this.

Awful. The Simpsons fail horribly at remaining up-to-date on their satire. Making fun of Apple? How fashionable, is it 2005 again?

I hate it when shows have to resort to unfunny topical humor because they don’t actually have anything else to talk about. Anyone else miss when the Simpsons actually had creative plots that didn’t revolve around the flavor of the month?

@19 How stupid must you be if you can’t even understand an episode of the Simpsons? They weren’t making fun of muslims, they were making fun of people who THINK all muslims are terrorists and trying to challenge stereotypes. I guess the show goes way over your head, stick to eating play doh

This segment doesn’t even make sense. Why would Lisa, of all people, be excited about an Apple store, one of the biggest symbols of consumerism today?

Because the iPods are directed mostly toward the younger generation and owning one is “cool” and like every little girl, she wants to be cool and fit in.

BTW, American Dad is better than most of the other stuff. Oh, that Roger.

@24 Maggie is too young and Bart is too male to fit the plot. So it was Lisa.

  26. Hmmmm
    December 2nd, 2008 | 13:06

Lisa is perfect though since she usually is like that and she fell into the trap that is Apple …. don’t think Bart was “too male” unless that’s synonymous with stupid because Bart is already dumb and as smart as Lisa is and all that she wants to fit in so badly.

The Simpsons has become something of a political soap box lately. It’s been going downhill for a while, but this series is the worst I’ve ever known!

Whether I agree with their opinions or not is irrelevant. It’s supposed to be lighthearted comedy and I don’t want people’s views (political, religious or otherwise) thrust on me when I’m relaxing.

“Why would Lisa, of all people, be excited about an Apple store, one of the biggest symbols of consumerism today?”

Er, because Apple ISN’T widely regarded as ‘one of the biggest symbols of consumerism’ – you’ve got Coke, Wall-Mart, Microsoft, all leading the line; and all of those companies still follow old-school shady consumerism: profit is everything.

Apple kept that mantra (and, as the episode points out, “No Refunds”) but had the common-sense to make an effort to be forward thinking in their relatively ethical business practice (cheap, but not slave labour, and a half-decent environmental policy), which makes them very appealing to people like Lisa – they represent the sort of consumerism a liberal doesn’t have to feel guilty about.
