The Shield S07E03 DSR XviD-NoTV

I tell you what, guys from NoTV has been quite impressive lately: reasonably fast pre times, good quality releases that don’t get nuked and their NFO is quite a nice read. Anyway, I shall rant about this release now. Those of you who know why, please enlighten me about the reason(s) why this show is not being broadcast in HD or, at the very least, in WS. People at FX Channel are happy to pimp out a 50-year old grandma with botox in 720p, but no spare greenbacks for a cop drama? Honestly…

Money Shot
Vic tries to finagle his way into favor with the Armenian mob by selling himself as a valuable commodity; Corrine is unexpectedly entangled in legal problems; Tina sets her sights on a businessman who specializes in adult entertainment.

”Tina sets her sights on a businessman who specializes in adult entertainment.”

I might give this a try

@iX: As far as I know the creators of the show intentionally chose an older type of camera to shoot the show. They did so because they thought the noisy image suits the dark and gritty setting.I believe they said so on one of the special features of the season one dvd-box.

    @ 4 Gyrrack:

The problem with that is that non-R1 DVD boxsets are presented in WS so it’s clearly possible.

@iX: You’re absolutely right about the non-widescreen broadcast versus the R2 etc dvd-boxes. I was, however referring to your initial comment why the series was not broadcasted in HD.
Since the creators chose to use older types of cameras at the start of the series, while better alternatives were also available then, I would find it an unusual choice to even consider high definition. I figure HD would only take away part of its unpolished realitstic look.

Yep, I see. HD might the killer for stuff like that, but WS.DSR or even HR.PDTV would be quite acceptable if it would broadcast on a HD channel but not in HD.

Yea.. I always thought that the show had a reality type theme to it myself… I am just wandering if Vic will actually manage to keep himself alive before this series ends… Great show by the way! And you’re right about the release of this show was like less than 20-30 minutes after it aired.. It made me grin..

The Shield has tested a variety of cameras including HD cameras, but the series is shot on Arri Sr3… this is an s16 camera that is more than capable of hd and ws format. They are doing this to give a doccumentary feel to the show. When they do rehearsals they excuse the camera guys so when they do shoot–the viewer always has this feeling that they are just catching up to the story and feeling always slightly off guard.

If The Shield was going to be on tv for another 2 seasons they were looking at using the Red One ( I am an early reservation holder– I am shooting timelapses this afternoon with mine ) and “dirty it up in post” but we know the answer to that one.

As a professional cameraman, I am still perplexed as to why they still go for the Picture format 480i (SDTV) to air. I do not get it.

The best f***** cop drama. EVER. PERIOD!
Forget NYPD Blue, CSI xyz, THIS, The Shield, is PURE GOLD.
Too bad this is the last season.
Why is it that the best shows, such as this and the Sopranos, always have to end after a few seasons?
I suppose there is only so many times Vic Macky and the Strike Team can avoid being caught.

I have watched DVDs of the shield in widescreen, not the same in 4:3 :(

Anyone know why Sons of Anarchy was only ripped from HDTV for the first ep and DSR since?

yup, your right, the 4:3 ratio is b0ll0x and entirely down to the network :( they have ALWAYS given the shield the short end of the stick, even down to airing slots and timescales between seasons…. and still it has continued to kick the A$$ out of the other crap they are releasing !!

thanks funkstick5000 for the info and your informed post, and yes, i too am baffled by this bit….

“As a professional cameraman, I am still perplexed as to why they still go for the Picture format 480i (SDTV) to air. I do not get it.”

i own all the previous 6 seasons on genuine DVD’s all in widescreen…. and that is some accomplishment for a tv show, considering the sheer volume of stuff i download and keep… that this one actually got me to get my tightly closed wallet out ! :P

btw… the first episode of this season was capped by DiMENSiON that did it in HR.PDTV, and i think it was the best of the 3 episodes available now
