Here’s the movie a lot of you have been waiting for; The Orphanage (Orfanato, El). Nice 2CD rip with AC3 audio which is Spanish but there are English subs included ;) Pretty good score on IMDB might make this worth watching.

Pan’s Labyrinth director Guillermo Del Toro produces director Juan Antonio Bayona’s gothic frightener about a long-abandoned orphanage with a particularly troubling past. As a child, young orphan Laura spent her formative years being cared for by the staff of a large orphanage located by the Spanish seaside. Those were some of the happiest years of Laura’s life, and now, thirty-years later, the former charge returns to the dilapidated institution with her husband Carlos and their seven-year old son Simon to re-open the orphanage as a facility for disabled children. But something ominous haunts the darkened hallways of this silent, stately manor. When Simon’s behavior begins to grow increasingly bizarre and malicious, Laura and Carlos start to suspect that the mysterious surroundings have awoken something ominous in the young boy’s imagination. It’s not long before Laura, too, is drawn into this disturbing web and the repressed memories of the past come flooding back in a terrifying torrent of tension and deeply disturbing revelations. With opening day drawing near and their situation growing increasingly grim by the hour, Simon attempts to write off their son’s bizarre behavior as a desperate bid to get more attention from his distracted parents. Laura isn’t so easily convinced of this theory though, and soon embarks on a desperate quest to unearth the terrible secret that lurks in the old house waiting for just the right moment to inflict devastating damage on both her and her family.

    because some people dont need them or dont understand them at all and make custom subs. just imagine if all the movies on the scene had chinese subs (or some language u dont speak)

    @1 because that is stupid when u can have a subs file … also lets u put other sub languages ….or turn it off if u want.

    I guess. Then can you recommend a good player because VLC doesn’t work for me and Nero’s player is the only one that does but the subtitles are all green.

    Plus, I know this is OT but the subs for The Darjeeling Limited were for every spoken word and not for the foreign parts. Any new subs?

    Well, I put the subs and vid file in the same folder with the same name. I tried that update thing too but when I go to video I don’t see an option for subtitles anywhere.

    Look guys to make subtitles work you gotta download the srt versions which are available in almost every site(subscene,wikisubtitles) then you have to change the filename to match the file name of the subtitles.
    Another good alternative is downloading stand alone players like mv2 or bso players( the older version of bso player is great) where all you have to do is drag and drop.

    I watch most of mine streaming to my xbox360, which doesnt support subtitle files sadly. So that why I’d like to see hard coded ones.

    Ensure your files are the same name.

    example:
    Dungeonsiege.avi
    Dungeonsiege.srt

    Works in MPC or Winamp. Probably most everything else also.

    @7 I would check ur filenames again… i just tested moving the subs out on a vid and it doesn’t appear if it doesn’t have the files…… on the one i just tested i have an .idx file and a .sub file… the filename needs to be exactly the same as the avi so i would copy the avi filename and rename the sub file just to be sure… and make the ext .sub and .idx respectfully….hope that helps…if not i dont use the nero player but im sure there has to be options for the subs in ur preferences… try messing with those…

    I use winamp with l-lite for most every file I run across. It handles 99% of ‘em. MPC handles the other 1%.

    You can hardcode the subs yourself using virtualdub. Not quite sure how, as it’s been awhile since I’ve needed it, but google could probably tell you.

    The easiest way to get all types of sub files to work is to download and install VobSub. As far as I know it works with all players and you can alter the settings of how the subs look.

    re: subtitle not working in VLC. sometime you have to drag-n-drop the subtitle file onto VLC while the movie playing.

    Problem with vobsub is it doesnt hardcode the subs.. For example streaming a movie to my or your ps3 is easy but trying to utlitize subs becomes a problem. The container support cannot be played naively but transcoded this is why it would be extremely helpful to have someone hardcode (in english) foreign or movies requiring subs.. Or else you have to use redkawa and transcoding (reduces quality) to get the subs working..

    I still don’t understand why people are always having issues with subs and players. Perhaps it would be a nice addition for someone in the staff to start posting the Full Klite Codec pack everytime it’s updated. Just my opinion! if not go and download the full pack so you never have to worry about codecs or subs working and it’s updated frequently.

    A great player with options for positioning, color, and size of subs is XBMC. It will also play .rar files directly. It plugs into your network then to your TV. Capable of 10-80i output and can stream directly from any network location. XBMC is the shizzzle. The last one I bought for a friend cost $65US.

    I saw this in the theatre. Really good except it has 3 endings. I think I would’ve liked it better if it ended with the first of the three, but it’s still well worth a watch.

    I use GOM player or ALShow and rarely have a problem with subtitles.

    I’ve never had problems with subs in vlc. Just right- click on the vlc screen, go to subtitle and cut the subs on.

    @51 I didn’t mean that there are alternate endings – sorry about that. So, no, you don’t need to wait for the dvdrip.

    I don’t want to give anything away. Here’s an example of what I mean:

    Did you see The Cable Guy? At the end of Cable Guy, Jim Carey takes what appears to be a fatal dive off a giant satellite dish that culminates in a black out. That would’ve been a brilliant ending for that movie, but then it reopens to show Carey still alive and everybody happy. Well, this movie is similar in that it ends (darkly), and then it ends, and then it ends again. The result is that it gets wrapped up a little to neat for my taste.

    add subtitels in VLC:

    open your .avi with OPEN AS…
    there is also a checkbox to use subtitles. there you can add the path to your subtitle file.
    just that easy.

    if you want to hard-code subs just use winavi. Make sure that .srt and .avi files are named exactly the same (apart from .srt and .avi of course) and are in the same directory. Burn the .avi file to a dvd format and winavi will do it automatically. It is also the fastest way to burn an avi to dvd format, subs or no subs.

    Just seen last weak in FantasPorto, and have enjoyed a lot. It’s amazing!
    It’s not a terrific horror film, and even has a touching story, but this doesn’t mean that you’ll not jump on!
    10/10, to me, best foreign movie (and I’ve just seen 2 days ago the “The Counterfeiters” btw, nothing special)

    nice, i love Spanish cinema, and for me, subs are not needed. So i prefer the non hard coded version of subs. Because I have friends from different nationalities and they don’t understand any word of Spanish…

    The best solution is to install some codec pack including vobsub and media player classic (I use K-Lite pack). It allows you to playback almost everything and subs work fine. Hard-code subs is the worst solution. You can’t resize etc.

    Spain has a part (Pais Vasco) that likes to be independent. And that part likes to take there independence with violence (ref ETA). The whole story is complicated, the government offered them independence, but the EU could not allow this and the new country would miss the European support. Well, the contradiction here is that Europe supports the separation of Kosovo… and i believe if they accepted the separation that eventually in some years they will be accepted in the EU. Further more, Spain start to be divided in may parts since the majority of the communities likes to be independed. Not as far as a separate country, but they like to have more power to decide over there own use of money income. What I see is a normal procedure in a lot of countries in Europe. The one more quickly than the other (see also Belgium, where the north part like to be separated from the south part).

    I hope that all my facts are correct, I don’t have any intention to offend anyone and my preference goes to what is the best for the people, living peacefully together in a well structured society.

    Subtitles (how to …..)

    1. playing

    If you want to read from a multi-language *.idx/*.sub-file on your PC use the Freeware VLC Player for instance (and just choose if available also a language audio track).

    To separate audio language Virtualdub can help you :-)

    Or you can easily convert with XconvertToDVD and choose the language file you want (subs).

    2. Ripping sub-files (not *.srt!)

    Making a *.srt file from a multi-language *.idx/*.sub file:
    - you need 2 progs (freeware)
    a. VobSubStrip
    b. VobSub 2.23 (latest)

    Method 1. (VobSubStrip)
    Open *.idx file in VobSubStrip. Mark in the box the language you want to keep. Choose save dir. en press generate. Now you have a stripped *.idx file with only the olanguage you wish.

    Method 2. (Manual)
    Open the *.idx file in “Notepad”. You see a chapter of codes and after a blank line, a language header (f.i. Chinese). Go down and see another blank line and after that a second language (f.i. English)… etc.
    Delete all the text (incl. language header), you don’t want. Do not alter anything or remove anything else! Done.

    Go to the dir. where you have installed Vobsub and open Subresync.

    Load the *.sub file (your new *.sub file has to be in the same dir, the old one should be removed or deleted).
    Open your *.sub file.
    Choose save as (Subripper) *.srt.
    Now Subresync has to be thought the OCR characters of your new text and will open a new window, displaying each single word, dash, period, etc. it does not yet know.
    In the main screen you will see the line of text it is taken from.
    The rest will only take X-minutes to teach the prog.
    If it says -v- and you see -w- (or any other incomplete character), press “extend” until you got what you want and confirm.
    The prog. is quit simple.
    Your new file will be saved automatically as *.srt.
    You can see, change or alter it in Notepad.

    Now you can use you new file for many pruposes, succes.

    f.i. change font, size, color, shadow, etc. with:
    “srt to ssa” (freeware prog).
    Both extensions are generic for your videosoft.

    I’m sorry if I’m stepping on someones toes here, but all this talk about hardcoded subs feels a bit unnecessary.

    I’m sorry for you guys (and gals) that have streaming issues and so on, but let’s face it – how does the majority of the people watch their downloaded movies?

    Another thing is that if you have a movie, only the movie and nothing but the movie it’s sure as h*ll is much easier for the few people who need subs hardcoded to actually do that than it is for the other to get rid of those hard coded subs.

    Besides – how many languages do we speak now – all over the world? Hardcoding everything would mean that we’d need as many versions of a release as there are potential languages viewing it. Is that more reasonable than releasing one version with possibility to add your own sub?

    Finally – to you who asked for an English version of this movie. After living in Spain for 18 months where more or less everything is still dubbed to Spanish I resent the idea of doing the other way around. Or are you perhaps asking for a a remake? A movie is always best viewed in it’s original language/form – that’s why we have subtitles. I watch English movies in English, Swedish movies in Swedish, Spanish movies in Spanish.. and so on..

    One question – loosely related to sub-talk

    If I want to burn 3-6 (depending on size) movies (with subs) on a dvd, and try to make sure that it actually plays in as many stand-alone divx/xvid players as possible – how do I do that?

    The subs – if I want two (or more) subs – what format should thay be in? Is srt okay in standalones?

    If not – if I need idx/sub – is there a super-easy way of converting two srt’s (or more) into one single set of idx/sub?

    The movies – can I keep them in folders separating them or do I need to put them in the “root” level of the dvd?

    I have burnt a zillion movies to DVDs, many of them with accompanying subtitles. It makes no difference if the subs are idx/sub or srt. The avi and sub files do not need to be in a separate folder. They can both be mixed with other films in the root dir of the DVD. VLC Media Player never has a problem locating the sub file. Just make sure, as many have already said, that the the .avi and sub files have exactly the same names.

    Before wasting a DVD, though, test the avi and sub file on your hard drive to make sure they are compatible.

    @84 Thanks for the srt subs :D

    I use a standalone divx dvd player to watch all my movies so hardcoded subs are basically the only way to go for me.
    I don’t complain with the fact that i have to encode the subs onto the movie since thats easy with any kind of subs EXCEPT .idx subs.
    The .idx subs have multiple languages/tracks on them and that plays fine on vlc but editing those to encode onto an avi are a huge pain in the butt. I wish everyone would just use srt or ssa files since you can edit the look of those easily.

    @89 Some standalone dvd players can play the srt file without encoding them onto the avi, you basically have to have the srt file and the movie in the same folder and hit the subtitle button on your remote. Its different with each dvd player. I know mine can play the srt file without encoding but if i pause the movie the sutitles stop playing so it kinda sucks. Plus the default fonts on dvd players sucks. Also .idx files wont work at all. That’s why you have to encode them so you get the fonts exactly how you want them.

    Is anybody willing to explain to me how to hardcode subtitles to a avi or movie file. I have a 40inch 1080p tv that I stream movies naivly with my ps3.. I hate re-encoding the container and loosing quality just to play the subs.. With the nice tv I have whats the point of watching subbed films on my comp when I can have surround sound system hooked to a nice tv. So my question is how do i hardcode subs? Help and when I say hardcode thats not vobsub thats not hardcoding.. Hardcoding means if you were to burn the file on a disc it would not need a srt file to play subs. Even with vobsub if you delete the srt file and try to play your finished vobsub movie on another comp. the subs will be gone. Thanks

    KLite codec pack sucks. Its huge and can still fail to play some formats. VLC is pretty nice as a player but its got a horrible interface and is pretty fiddly to use.

    I’ve never looked back after switching to Media Player Classic and FFDShow. Throw Quicktime Alternative and Realplayer Alternative in the mix too and you’re set.

    Subs play fine, all video formats play fine. You get a fast simple video player and quicktime movies can be saved easily. You know it makes sense.

    all you guys have to do is buy a DVD player that supports DIVX files and SRT files — i got one for like $35 and you can burn a DIVX file with a SRT file onto a disc and watch the movie on your TV with subs turned on or off

    I agree that KLite codec pack sucks, i don’t know why anyone uses it. The only 2 players i use are VLC and MPC to play anything. I used FFDShow for a while but i didnt like there being 2 different icons in the system tray, 1 for audio and one for video and i also didnt like the huge menu that appears when you right click on it.
    I use DirectVobSub to watch anything with subs, mkv’s and whatnot. It appears in the tray and when you right click on it it shows the subtitle tracks and audio tracks which is nice and easy. It also has a menu that lets you force the subtitles into whatever font/style/size you want it to be.

    As far as encoding subtitles into a video i use Avi Recomp since its made to produce an avi that will play on 100% of the standalone players out there. It has never failed me :D Avi Recomp accepts .txt, .sub, .srt, .ass, .ssa subtitles. Its useful if your standalone can’t play srt files or if you just want the font to look bigger for easier reading or just want it a different color.

    I use Subtitle Workshop to change my .srt files into .ssa files (takes less then 1 second to change it) and load those into Avi Recomp since with .ssa files i can change the font of the subtitles, the placement of them on the video, the size of the letters and whatnot.

    Anyways, thats thats i do, i’d like to hear if anyone else encodes files differently.

    D-Jordi I speak 5 different languages, italian, turkish, arabic, syrian or aramiac, and english… I think your looking way to deeply in this and making your own assumptions. I am from the middle east and in knowing that I dont think its bias toward Americans.. Let me put a cap on this conversation… How are me and you comunicating with eachother as well as everyone else on this blog?? In english, I rest my case.. I think its safe to say posting hardcoded avi’s with english subtitles is far from “The day all movies gets hardcoded”, because we live in America and English is our primary language its fair to say a hardcoded english copy is acceptable. For the rest of the minorities and people who speak rare languages and do not understand or can not read engligh I think its safe to say will understand, some may even prefer the hardcoded english as they are visiting a English based website. Anyways I think you just misunderstood my intention, its all good..

    subs work fine on my harddrive but when i burn on the files on a disk the subs don’t show, what am i doing wrong here, i’ve never had this problem with other subbed movies

    For those wanting to hardcode their own subs it’s real easy.

    Simply get winavi, if you don’t have it you can find a free trial version to use. Just google it.

    After you get winavi, simply put the orphanage avi files in the same folder as the subs.
    Then open winavi and convert the movie files & the sub files as vob file.

    That’s how I did it. It was fast & easy.

    You can watch the preview of the movie in winavi to make sure the subs show up.

    hi all. okay, i’ve never had to add the subtitles to a movie, so i have no idea what to do. i don’t necessarily want to burn the dvd, i just want to add the subtitles to the movie files and watch it on my pc. can anybody help me with the easiest way to do this? any help offered is greatly appreciated!
