The Orange Box-DETONATiON

OK people it took a month or so but group DETONATiON have released the brilliant Orange Box from famous devs; Valve. As most of you probably know this little beauty contains Half Life 2: Episode 2, Portal and Team Fortress 2! Three superb games in their own right. Previously group UNLEASHED released both Half Life 2: Episode 2 and Portal by ripping the local .gcf files and then applying a steam emulator made by the now busted group VENGEANCE for their HL2 release. This detonation release has been cracked to allow you to play without any emulation or steam client, the only thing that has been changed is the installer everything else remains the same. If you download this release then you experience of playing HL2 E2 and Portal will be no different to anyone else’s. The rub comes with online play, specifically online play for Team Fortress 2 (The game does not have a single player or bots, its online only) will not work on legit steam servers as you need a valid key. However there are tons of cracked servers out there its just a question of finding them. Hint: Use Google… Anyway this is a beast of a game(s) weighing in at around 8 GB. Pretty big by anyone’s standards. I really recommend this though, and its definitely worth a purchase.

Description: Once again players assume the role of Gordon Freeman, a scientist destined to save the Earth from hordes of gruesome alien attackers. Valve has created a fully realized world in Half-Life 2, with objects and characters that feature accurate physics properties, behaving with the appropriate mass, density, and physical properties of their real-life counterparts. Extremely intelligent computer AI result in enemies that plan, adapt, and respond to the player’s actions. Following on the heels of the similarly-titled next-gen console edition, this package is a near-complete package of the Half-Life 2 phenomenon, packed with bonuses in addition to the genre-expanding original Half-Life 2 game. Half-Life 2: Episode One and Episode Two add-on levels are also on the disc, as are the stunningly complex puzzle game Portal and the online phenomenon Team Fortress 2.

Features:

  • Half-Life 2: Episode Two — the second installment in Valve’s episodic trilogy advances the award-winning story, leading the player to new locations outside of City 17.
  • Portal — a pioneering type of single player action game that rewrites the rules for how players approach and manipulate their environment – much like how Half-Life 2’s Gravity Gun reinvented the way gamers interact with objects in the game.
  • Team Fortress 2 — an all-new version of the legendary title that spawned team based multiplayer action games. The game’s daring new art style features the most advanced graphics of any Source-based game released to date.

System Requirements:

  • 1.7 GHz processor
  • 512 MB RAM
  • DirectX 8 compatible video card
  • Windows 2000/XP/Vista

All the games work great except for two items… In Portal and TF2, some of the floor and wall textures don’t show up so it seems those areas are just black. The game works fine, but if you go into an area where the textures don’t load, it’s hard to determine where the wall begins or ends.

I’m running a Direct X 8 version card… does this have anything to do with it? HL2, HL2-EP1, HL2-EP2 work great…. its a texture problem with Portal and TF2.

    Any help will be great…

    Thanks

    November 30th, 2007 | 21:49

yes bladerunner, the fact that your graph card cant handle some of the textures is pretty much a nobrainer.

unfortunately there arent any dx8 patches to fix that so youl just have to upgrade. good luck

    The.Orange.Box-DETONATiON DVD9 to 2xDVD5 conversion. Tested, working.

    1. download iscab v10 –> http://uploaded.to/?id=dtxz8c
    2. copy the game files into a folder, and extract iscab files into this folder
    3. run make_dvd5.bat
    4. delete iscab.exe, make_dvd5.bat, make_list.bat, MediaBuild40.dll, ISTools.dll
    5. delete cabs 5-13
    6. move data3-4 to DVD2
    7. copy autorun.inf and hl2.ico to DVD2
Change open in autorun.inf to Open=0

DVD9 to 2xDVD5 conversion works, however it seems to be necessary to label the isos DISK1 and DISK2. thanks Norb

Unfortunately, though the amount of information will technically fit on two DVDs the way your solution breaks it up, Norb, data2.cab ends up being 4,294,968,319 bytes (at least on my machine it did) and the file size limit of the ISO9660 file system is 4,294,967,295 bytes (or FFFFFFFF in hexadecimal). It’s over by exactly 1024 bytes for some reason. So, ImgBurn can’t make an iso.

Fortunately, I figured out how the fix works by comparing the layout.bin files. The files are reconstructed according to the new layout.bin specifications (yes, you ARE supposed to replace it when asked, btw, in case anyone was wondering). So, using your favorite hex editor (Winhex for example), change byte 13 in layout.bin from FF to FB (then save it and close it). Now when you run make_dvd5.bat it will create properly-sized files (burn tested and working). Technically this should not be necessary (the initial setting was correct). Apparently there’s a bug in iscab.

Now, if you’re planning to re-use iscab in the future, consider setting bytes 12-15 in layout.bin to 00 00 80 89 as this will create 2200 MB files and give you a more even split than creating 4 GB files will (you would just put data4-5 on disc 2 instead of data3-4). In fact, had the game been just 20 MB bigger, the 4 GB split would not have worked at all (while the 2200 MB split still would). But as long as it works, that’s all that matters.

Well, thanks for the fix, I had to tweak it a bit but it was still very helpful. And iscab seems to be a very useful application indeed. Something tells me I’ll be using it again.

Norb’s DVD9 to 2 DVD5’s method works.. Tested with full install using Volume names of DISK1 and DISK2.

@Godslayer: ISO9660 Level 3 supports file sizes over 4 gig. I assume ImgBurn doesn’t support Level 3 since it didn’t work for you. I burned mine using K3B in Linux without problems.. I figure that Nero supports Level 3 but I haven’t tested that.

Anyways.. good to see we can at least burn this.

Does anyone know how to get team fortress to work online. I’ve tried to access cracked servers but it won’t let me, just disconnects after awhile.. Now when I try it says that this steam account has been used to login from another location and that I need to login again. It just says user name DETONATION, and password is blank. Is there a password, or is there a way to play online.

I’m considering buying the game legit, but have never played this game before and don’t want to spend the money if its not any good.

Awesome…. I wrote before about some of the texture not appearing in Portal and HL2 because I had a DirectX 8 video card….. I went and updated my video drivers to the latest version and BAMMMM!!!!… all textures are loading fine.

    Cool!!!!

I’ve been playing ep2 and somewhere near the end, the game just exit-es. I tried reloading, started the level from scratch, even reinstalled. Around the part that big monster your trying to escape throws you one level down. It just blacks out. Anyone with similar experience / solutions?
Regarding dvd recording for this one – burn the rars (not elegant, but works for friendsharing)

    December 5th, 2007 | 13:41

I am also having the problem with Episode 2, the game always crashes while exiting a certain level. I looked online and saw that Valve released a patch to fix this, but as this release is non-steam, how can I apply the patch?

  21. John
    December 5th, 2007 | 19:43

I am not able to patch Episode 2, or Team Fortress 2 which I want to play but haven’t figured out how yet, maybe some helpful person will help with that. But I did find a workaround for that Episode 2 problem, edit the The Orange Box\half-life 2 episode two\ep2\cfg\config.cfg file and change sv_unlockedchapters to “8″, that will unlock the chapters of course, then start a new game, and choose Chapter 3, that will get you past the game crashing. You miss the part where you heal Alex, but at least you can continue playing!

Thank you SO much John! I have been trying to get the patch to fix that part of the game for a couple weeks and have not been able to obtain it because its an “automatic” download through Steam… I have literally spent hours searching for the fix and have found nothing, so I thought I would check under the comments section one last time. Thank You!

    About updates and patches…

As long as you have all the GCFs in the “Orange Box” directory, you can easily update them and even launch them.

Use CF Toolbox to find out what versions of GCFs you have (usually it will say outdated). Then download patches from the patch site (I will give that link below). And use CF Toolbox to update your GCF files.

Then use STEAMBUSTER (Orange box version) to launch all your games. If you want CounterStrike Source, just download all the GCFs , use CF Toolbox to update them, then launch the games using STEAMBUSTER.

Pretty simple… here’s the link where you can get all the tools and updates… http://cs.rin.ru/forum/index.php?c=2

  24. bladerunner1971
    December 8th, 2007 | 04:22

    Adding some comments..

I still think its important to support Valve (buy their games)… I love their games and I support them because they push the envelope on 1st person shooters… imagine, a genre of games that everyone thought you couldn’t improve upon and Valve does Halflife… Then Valve changes the way we interact with objects in the game in HL2 (gravity gun)… then Valve changes the way we interact with our environment in Portal (portal gun).

They wouldn’t be able to do it without funding… so help them and buy their games.

On that note, I hate STEAM. I know that Valve is trying protect their product but it shouldn’t be at the expense of gaming conveniance. I want to be able install a game from a cd and just play it!… I don’t want to wait two hours while the game connects over the internet, and unpacks\updates\configures\whatever… what if I was on dialup or I didn’t have an internet connection, then what? What if I don’t want to install it on a “connected” computer? I have sifted online through so many complaints of legit users that have issues with STEAM and can’t play games that they purchased because of some issue with either their connection or with “updating” via STEAM.

As you can see STEAM doesn’t protect their product. Its great for content deployment but not protection. Its hackable. I think that Valve needs to rethink their way of protection that doesn’t make it difficult for users who don’t have internet connections. I think they will reach a wider audience. Its always the case, if you create protection, there’s always someone out there that can hack it.

Anyway… bottom line: Play the games for free if you want, but if you feel the games were really good, then support the company that brough them to you. Go out and buy the games or send Valve a check. Let them know that the games are great, but STEAM stinks.

That’s my two cents.. uh.. make that four cents (sorry about the length).

Thankz bladerunner1971, it seems to have updated using that method. “source 2007 binaries.gcf” is now up to date and it fixed my terrain bug where freeman would bob up and down/jump all the time.

Not sure if it will fix the level crashing issues people are having. Hopefully it will work.. I’m going to play it now! :)

BTW. You might be able to rid yourself of using Steambuster by copying the “[steambuster dir]/half-life episode two/bin/engine.dll” that Steambuster creates to the “The Orange Box/half-life episode two/bin/engine.dll” overwriting the old one. I only tested this for correcting my bug with success but it might just work for the level bug.

If it does work.. just throw “source 2007 binaries.gcf” & engine.dll on a CD to complement your orange box DVD’s and label it.. Orange Box Updates or something :)

Since the ISO is larger than will fit onto a dual-layered DVD, does anybody know what CAB file only affects Team Fortress 2? I have no intention of playing that game, but would like to fit everything onto one DVD.

This isnt the Orange Box but “Black Box” (contain only 3 games).
// To split, just pack (in Winrar or something like that) it into smaller archieves and burn it, its the easiest way.

First of all, Thanks DETONATiON for this release, it’s great and almost fully working. Haven’t tested out TF, but apparently that’s working too.
Second of all, I’m having problems with EP2. In the beginning, right after you fall down and the Guardian’s head is poking through that broken wall, when you walk on towards the fence, the game will crash with a memory error. Well, not too bad, since you can unlock chapters in the CFG. But then, towards the end, when you reach White Forest, it happens again when you walk towards the group of rebels sitting on the couches and talking. I know that this is really near to the end, so I really don’t want to spoil the story like I did with unlocking the chapter (I missed Alyx getting healed by the Vortigaunts). I saw that there were a few solutions to this, for instance by downloading CF Toolbox. Only thing is: I can’t find it. The link that BladeRunner1911 provided is invalid. Isn’t there a RS or MegaUpload somewhere? Or another way to fix this bug? I’m so close to the end, and dying with anticipation that this bug is just killing me.
    Thanks in advance
    Rojo

bcoz original contains 5 games. and this one has only 3
    HL 2, HL2-EP1, HL2-EP2, TF, Portal
and there is new box of valve its called complete collection it will be in retail stores soon.
it will contain every game made by VALVE

    January 15th, 2008 | 14:10

For all of you having the bug where the game exits after you escape the guardian (that’s in the level where you are looking for the extract to heal Alyx) there is a work-around that can get you going.

At the end of the small tunnel where you jump in, there is a dead body. Don’t look at it. Just walk past it for a few steps looking on your right or at the ceiling or anywhere the body is not in sight.

As I said it’s a work-around, not a fix… Credits go to whoever suggested that in the thepiratebay dot org torrent comments.

Now I’d like to ask; anyone found how to fix:
    1. HL2EP2 – Crosshair is a big Q. Weapon symbols are also letters, like k, l, m.
    2. HL2EP2 – Freeman is a bit happy; he jumps frequently without intention or warning :D
    3. Portal – The game won’t load. Engine error: Could not load library client.

  35. MAddox
    January 23rd, 2008 | 18:10

I’m having real problems with the cross-hairs. All I get is a Q, and also I get letters for the weapon symbols. Apart from that the game is great, however it is nearly unplayable with this distraction.

Can someone be more specific about not looking at the dead body? Is it the tunnel with the fan, or after that? There are a few bodies lying around.

    Thanks.
