The Man From Earth 2007 PROPER DVDRip XviD-DOMiNO

Ok group DOMiNO bring us an interesting release. Although I haven’t heard of this movie it seems to be an interesting one. It won’t appeal to sci-fi fans looking for action and adventure, but it should develop a following among those who like speculative fiction that’s strong on ideas. An intelligent fantasy about a troubled college professor who’s a centuries-old immortal. An Amazing Sci-Fi Fantasy!

The Man From Earth concerns Professor John Oldman, a scientist who summons a group of associates to a cabin one freezing night, and strikes them with a fantastic revelation: he is not a traditional human, but a 14,000 year-old immortal, who has survived centuries of evolution from the Cro-Magnon Era to the present. In the hours to follow, Professor Oldman’s earth-shaking assertion about himself challenges the men on spiritual, scientific and historical levels. But the most incredible is yet to come - an even more astonishing truth in which the men’s discussions culminate.

This heady dose of cerebral fantasy was scripted by the late Jerome Bixby, who wrote Fantastic Voyage, four classic Star Trek episodes and one unforgettable Twilight Zone episode. Man From Earth’s plot concerns a farewell party for a college professor during which he reveals to his colleagues that he is an immortal who is more than 14,000 years old. The premise seems dubious, but it is skillfully carried off, with the film structured like a theater piece in which the small cast of characters probes all the historical, emotional and religious aspects of the notion of immortality.

The short story is good, this adaptation is not. It is dull, and rather boring. The biggest problem is the direction, since the actors are top notch, but here they fail. It is a Starz cable tv movie, so its digital video, and it shows. It could have been a much better stage play. But hey, its the team behind Star Trek….

To the Usenet vs torrent issue… torrents are cool if you do not mind broadcasting your IP… private trackers are cool, and give good speed if you down POPULAR stuff. Usenet is good if you can spare 10 dollars a month.

And my dad is stronger than your dad……

on usenet I get my full 5Mbps, 100% of the time, and no lame ass seeders or waiting days for solid connections. If you have FiOS you get 15Mbps. Torrents Id be waiting days for some obscure 4gig dvds, on usenet I get them in a little over an hour. 700mb divx files in 20 minutes. all of the time. Encrypted connections & No worry about mpaa cronies joining a private tracker too. t0rrents are for n00bs, no matter how you want to believe.

I really enjoyed the story of this movie, though the acting could have been better or maybe it was the general mood of the movie that really sucked. Why did it suck? Because of how it was filmed and edited, it really looks like old men walking around talking in a shed or something like that not even the fireplace set the mood. Everyone really looks uncomfortable.

Some food for the trollers, get a life who cares about torrents vs usenet use whatever you like.

  55. old-SF-hand
    December 9th, 2007 | 12:41

This is a must see movie if your into cerebral science fiction. The idea is an old one in SF, for example Heinlein treated it with the Lazarus Long stories. Where this story differs from Heinlein’s treatment is that it explores the idea (partial immorality) in a microcosm. Heinlein rather perfunctorily deals with the idea using the “we’re long lived so everyone is going to automatically hate us” excuse (which carries it’s own problems) and explores the longgevity in a macrocosm with the Family and so forth.
The only real fundamental problem with this story is the same one that Heinlein faced and also ignored, the same as Bixby is doing here. That is, the main character is tremendously long-lived, has studied just about everything, considers himself a human, and is supposed to be the epitome of kindness to his fellow man - yet has never bothered attempting to study himself with modern medicine, never even gotten a medical degree, to find out why he’s long lived. Thus, his mutation will die when he does, and humanity will never benefit from it by learning from it how to extend lifespan. This isn’t consistent with the characters supposed unselfishness.
The acting in this movie is very good, unfortunately the story is logically weak, it very likely suffers from lack of rewriting, which is understandable since it was basically completed on the author’s deathbed. But, for a beginning science fiction fan, who has not perhaps encountered the longevity stories in science fiction yet, it is a fantastic introduction, and the slams against religion are intelligent and far more well done than in most movies of this type, (and very timely too given the holidays).

This movie sucks butt. I think that it is intellectually weak with my genome project. I have studied many years under my father, and his theories disagrees with the plot of this horendous film. I believe that the best setting was the living room, which inhabited the climax, when Samuel L. Jackson look-alike stole the rock. I think a sequel is best needed so that I can use it to torture my victims that don’t know how to control their powers (e.g. Sylar). As my father once said, “save the cheerleader, save the world” I think it is best said from my best friend… “FLYING MAN!” I think you should speak to the Drug control agency since this might be patented tob e better than ipecrack or herbal assance.
In short, if you are considering watching this, DON’T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One of the best and most cerebral sci-fi movies ever made! Compelling and utterly engrossing. A brilliant finale to Jerome Bixby’s career and well worth buying on DVD since you’ll pull it out and watch it again and again with friends and family or just when you’re in the mood for an intelligent internal debate.

Now, if only they made this into a series… I could see good guys and bad guys in the church, the government and bio-engineering concerns all desperate to control, silence or merely possess “The Man From Earth”.
