if you have got a hdtv rrpostal youll never see any significant difference between this and a divx. so just get the divx copy and save ur space :) but if u did get an HDtv then u certainly should see a difference. ive got the dirty harry films and even though the first film is from way back in 1971 i can see a difference between the HD version and the regular dvd version.

i dont think u need to be a director of photography to be able to make the comments Nat and WnstnSmth made. they where tryin to alleviate peoples concern whether it was worth bothering to get old films in HD. and in laymans terms what they said was prett much correct. almost every statement volker made had nothin to do with the statements they made!

wnstnsmith wasnt suggesting that a film like the longest day can be made sharp and clear...he was sayin that it can be restored to almost as good as it was originally shot. which is true, its a well known fact and theres been many documentarys showin this being done...but if the original is grainy then the restored version will be grainy. the original question was whether these old films are worth getting in HD. well of course they are if theyve been properly restored

you dont need to be a director of photography to know that most movies shot on film stock in the past 50years will look better on a highdef format. they where shot on film (whether it be 35mm or technicolor or whatever term u wish to throw around to seem more important than everyone else) that was intended to be shown in a cinema with a huge screen. even the biggest HDTV still isnt as big as an average cinema screen, so putting these films onto videotape or even dvd has never done these films justice. vhs and dvds are of a much lower quality than film is capable of. which i believe is the point "Nat" was trying to make. even HDdvd and bluray still isnt as high a resolution that film is capable of.
of course they wont appear as sharp and clear as a new digitally shot film and over the years they will degrade and any defect in the film is goin to be more apparant - which i think is the point ur tryin to make volker - basically the good parts of old films will look signifacantly better, but the bad parts, grain, hairs, smudges, burns will be much more noticeable. the loss in quality is due to the years not the actually technology it was recorded onto. its really down to how the studio has looked after the film stock all these years.
as a guide, a photograph made on 35mm film is the equivalent of at least a 30 megapixel digital camera. so at the moment film stock is still much higher than most current digital technology.

i dont think we can all rely on a Director of Photography to be passing a forum so until then regular people have to attempt to answer peoples questions as best as they can ;)

How much better could this 100000g download be than a regular old "horrible" quality 700mb one? I just can't justify the Time/ space needed for many of these HD rips, especially 40 yr old ones. Maybe I'm wrong and this is fabulous, I'm just not a huge fan of HD yet. I'm too cheap to pay for HD TV too.

Because real war is large amounts of boredom mixed with moments of sheer terror.

I really like this movie(which I saw for the first time when I was 8 or so), and therefore bought it on DVD. But I would love to have the colour version. If anybody has this on DVD/Divx/Xvid, please post a link. Thanx!
