The Longest Day 1962 720p BluRay x264-SiNNERS

Quite an old war drama The Longest Day filmed back in 1962 is now available in BluRay quality in a new release from group SiNNERS. The movie describing events of D-Day from 2 points of view was awarded by 2 Oscars and holds a solid 7.8 points at IMDB, so you don’t have to worry about the quality. The picture isn’t that sharp as usually, but that’s obviously caused by older date of filming.

England in June 1944. Unseasonal storms. Allied troops are massed ready for the invasion of France, some already on the boats. The Normandy beaches will be their destination while paratroopers are dropped inland to take key towns and bridges. On the other side of the Channel the Germans still expect the invasion at Calais, and anyway the weather makes them think nothing is likely to be imminent. Eisenhower decides to go. Hitler sleeps on.

Oscar for best effects, should be interesting to see what skills they had 50+ years ago.

Red Buttons? are you serious? he must be there for comic relief , and i use the term “comic” extremely loosely.

Even in the 1950s, very fine optics were available that could create very sharp, colorful images on motion picture film. A studio can take these original film masters of movies and TV shows and convert them to high definition video. This makes almost any movie made in the past 50 years a potential high definition movie. If the film has faded and has visual defects due to age, digital remastering techniques can restore and enhance the film to make it look better than new.

@8 35mm film which this movies was shot on would be considered
a HD source. 35mm film is capable of 1400 horizontal lines and 3-12 milion pixels per frame.

    Please Guys,

dont talk about issues where both of you are lacking of knowledge is obviously. I am an director of photography and have to correct you both:

Not every movie is filmed on high quality negatives and is perfectly exposed. The image quality is not granted because some original master negatives are lost and so the studio have to master from interpositiv copies. Or due to degradation of age….the negative will decrease the sharpness and grain will be visible. Remastering can SOMETIMES help but mostly you can not get the same HD quality of new movies. Spartacus is remastered very carefully but even the 1080p version is grainy and not as sharp as Lwarence of arabia.

The longest day is filmed on standard stock 35mm B&W and so the quality is not comparable to 3-strip Technicolor. The negative is filmed with grainy and little dirty to match it with the WWII Look of the war.

They dont want to make a sharp clean movie. It was the artistic decision of the filmmaker. HD means not “only sharp and clean pictures”. In Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid the director of photography did exposed the negative to destroy the clean Technicolor colours and soften the picture.

Look at DIE HARD 1+2 HDTV - the picture looks soft and not sharp but it was cinematographed that way….it was the look and after 20 years of aging grain will be more visible.

What did we learn? Dont talk about professional cinematography if you are not a pro! Thanks in advance

    Volker

The Original Movie ” Longest Day” was in Black & White, then they did a color remaster(which I have), Now Out with the HD release. So is this a Black & White or a Colour HD rip?

John Wayne in a WW-II Movie, don’t make me laugh

Henry Fonda enlisted in the Navy to fight in World War II
Bob Mitchum was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving at Fort MacArthur, California.
Jimmy Stewart even got the distinguished service medal( Flying Cross, Croix de Guerre)

John (Marion Morrison) Wayne was quite happy to hide behind the many movie studio get-out clauses

Has anyone noticed that this movie about the “D Day Landings” was released one day after the 64th anniversary of the actual landings (6/6/44) - and Red Buttons does play a dramatic part , he is the paratrooper who gets hooked up on the tower of the St Mere Eglise(church) and has to play dead to avoid being shot. (and it actually happened).

  22. cdntcareless
    June 8th, 2008 | 03:38

PS: and the church still has a (dummy) paratrooper hanging from its roof in memory of the event.

How much better could this 100000g download be than a regular old “horrible” quality 700mb one? I just can’t justify the Time/ space needed for many of these HD rips, especially 40 yr old ones. Maybe I’m wrong and this is fabulous, I’m just not a huge fan of HD yet. I’m too cheap to pay for HD TV too.

i dont think u need to be a director of photography to be able to make the comments Nat and WnstnSmth made. they where tryin to alleviate peoples concern whether it was worth bothering to get old films in HD. and in laymans terms what they said was prett much correct. almost every statement volker made had nothin to do with the statements they made!

wnstnsmith wasnt suggesting that a film like the longest day can be made sharp and clear…he was sayin that it can be restored to almost as good as it was originally shot. which is true, its a well known fact and theres been many documentarys showin this being done…but if the original is grainy then the restored version will be grainy. the original question was whether these old films are worth getting in HD. well of course they are if theyve been properly restored

you dont need to be a director of photography to know that most movies shot on film stock in the past 50years will look better on a highdef format. they where shot on film (whether it be 35mm or technicolor or whatever term u wish to throw around to seem more important than everyone else) that was intended to be shown in a cinema with a huge screen. even the biggest HDTV still isnt as big as an average cinema screen, so putting these films onto videotape or even dvd has never done these films justice. vhs and dvds are of a much lower quality than film is capable of. which i believe is the point “Nat” was trying to make. even HDdvd and bluray still isnt as high a resolution that film is capable of.
of course they wont appear as sharp and clear as a new digitally shot film and over the years they will degrade and any defect in the film is goin to be more apparant - which i think is the point ur tryin to make volker - basically the good parts of old films will look signifacantly better, but the bad parts, grain, hairs, smudges, burns will be much more noticeable. the loss in quality is due to the years not the actually technology it was recorded onto. its really down to how the studio has looked after the film stock all these years.
as a guide, a photograph made on 35mm film is the equivalent of at least a 30 megapixel digital camera. so at the moment film stock is still much higher than most current digital technology.

i dont think we can all rely on a Director of Photography to be passing a forum so until then regular people have to attempt to answer peoples questions as best as they can ;)

if you have got a hdtv rrpostal youll never see any significant difference between this and a divx. so just get the divx copy and save ur space :) but if u did get an HDtv then u certainly should see a difference. ive got the dirty harry films and even though the first film is from way back in 1971 i can see a difference between the HD version and the regular dvd version.
