Guys,

the movie Hunt for red october suffered from bad mastering quality since the first releases on VHS, laserdisc and DVD. The reason is the same as for DIE HARD 1+2 and Lethal Weapon. The director of photography was Jan de Bont and he likes to use low key (less light, low light photography) with lens flares and soft light. On cinema screens its working great but the Master copies from the 80/90s are now over a decade old and many suffered from aging.

I did saw Hunt for red october in several versions (DVD US, DVD UK, DVD germany and DVD japan. Remastered Laserdisc) also HDTV versions from UK, Japan and Russia....every copy was a "not very good" HD release. Everone was grainy...dark....had lack of sharpness. You cant compare gladiator with this film.

The only Chance is that Fox pictures invest money in a digital remastering process and even then...i would say the quality will only rise to "good-averge" quality.

As for my experience:

I was a camera operator in the 90s in germany and worked the last 2 years in HDTV research on a german university. So i Can say I have fundemantal knowledge over Mastering processes.

regards

Where the hell do folk get off complaining about "old" movies being released by "the scene" i just dont get it:-

1) IT`S NOT RLSLOG THAT RELEASES THEM. (THEY JUST REPORT WHAT IS RELEASED)

2) IF YOU DONT LIKE WHATS BEING RELEASED THEN GET YOUR OWN SOURCES AND OWN GROUP AND RELEASE WHAT YOU WANT.

3) SINCE WHEN DID "BRAND NEW" EQUAL QUALITY THIS MOVIE IS FAR BETTER THAN MOST OF THE GARBAGE RELEASED THESE DAYS.

I think that you (rlslog) should institute a ban for people posting stupid "why old movies" comments let them **** off to another site and it`ll make life better for the folk here who do appreciate movies/aps/games/whatever regardless of how old they are...

@mad.mad.scientist

No. You're research is flawed. Both HD-DVD and Blu-ray DVD use different codecs for different movies when they are released. You have to take into account what format the source is. The studios have released films in MPEG2, h.264, and VC-1.

If you are ripping an MPEG2 to x.264, then you will get a good compression and shrink to DVD5 size. But some of the h.264 and VC-1 releases won't get nearly as good of compression and you'll need to rip to at least a DVD9 size to maintain the quality.

@ wdt,

Thanks for the link, forgot this was due out. ;)

As for the film, Sean Connery has the best Russian accent ever!

BTW: lee welton - when did you become all sensible all of a sudden? Checking your posts a few weeks back, 'moron' seems like a compliment compared to then. Got some nice meds from the doctor? :D
