The Hunt For Red October 1990 720p HDDVD x264-SiNNERS

A golden oldie here: The Hunt for Red October (1990), released by SiNNERS. I have really enjoyed this movie, it has some nice acting in it (especially for that time) and it has a nice storyline too. The movie is quite known so I think some of you guys want to add this to their HD-collection.

Sean Connery stars with Alec Baldwin in John McTiernan’s blockbuster The Hunt For Red October. Connery plays Marko Ramius, a senior Lithuanian sub captain whose plans to defect are met with strong opposition by his own Soviet navy, and American misconceptions of his intentions. Baldwin plays CIA analyst Jack Ryan, the one man who sees the defection, and must convince most of the American navy he is correct. The action climaxes with an amazing naval battle, but who will win The Hunt for Red October?

6 or 8 gigabyte is too much for a hd rip, i mean watching a movie in hd is great, but how much time is it going to take for downloading it and also seeding an 8gb release.

does the scene have rules for this kind of releases, i think that a maximum size of 4,5 gb is good.

I use CoreAVC (look it up on torrent sites, makes a huge difference in performance when watching HD movies. A MUST have when watching HD videos, silky smooth playback on my dual core when watching extremely high bitrate 1080p movies.

    more info below

    http://www.coreavc.com/

CoreAVC is a H.264 video codec created by CoreCodec. CoreAVC is based on the MPEG-4 Part 10 standard and is one of the codecs used in Blu-ray (BD) and in High Definition DVD (HD-DVD). AVC/H.264 is the next-generation standard for video, and CoreAVC is being recognized as one of the worlds most efficient H.264 video decoders. The efficiency of CoreAVC in software is often compared to be faster than other solutions that try to rely on ‘hardware’ to increase playback performance of H.264 video.

In my opinion 4.5G for a hd movie is a waste :(

I got a star wars return of the jedi rip thats over 20 gigs. :) nothing comes close with the quality, bigger harddrive helps of course.

    @lee welton

i think calling people morons when they express their standpoints i kinda childish (same thing goes for the mommy and daddy thing)

i searched for releases in newstorrents and most of the HD or blueray rips have less than 20 seeders if not 0 seeder, because even if you download it in a short laps of time, seeding it will take way more time even with a good connection (i’m presuming that every one seeds the the same size he downloaded).

what i asked for was if there were rules for the scene regarding HD and BR rips like it’s for series and dvd rips,so if a staff member can answer me i’d be grateful.and as i see there might be : movie with more than two hours get more than 4.5gb but dont exceed 8gb

I also searched for your comments in HDrips but i found no comment with the name lee welton, i would gave some credits to your reaction if your had other comments about my question, but since your comments are limited to this relase, i wont argue with you, just please if you can’t give an constructive answer, don’t go berserk on other people.

It’s probably not a great idea to download an HDrip from a torrent. It will take a long time to download, and even longer to seed even 1:1. If you want to download lots of HDrips, it’s probably best to get an unlimited usenet account.

  30. mad.scientist
    October 21st, 2007 | 17:44

    Let’s make some research:

    Movie DVD: ~8 GB
    DVD RIP: 2x 0.7 GB
Rip is 17.5% size of original.

HD Movie on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray: ~20 GB
    HD-RIP: 6.6 GB
Rip is 33% size of original.

Even 4.3 GB rip has smaller compression ratio than typical DVD-RIP. As movie in high resolution is compressed better (average advantage is 10.41%) than in standard one, the compression ratio should be at about 17.5%*(100-10.41)%=15.7% (3,14 GB) to reach the same quality loss.

But we want to make proper use of all of our soft- and hardware, right? Best compression ratios for DVD storage are:
21.5% of HD is 4.3 GB (standard DVD-R size)
    43% of HD is 2x 4.3 GB (8.6 GB; two DVD-R discs)

    15.7%

  31. mad.mad.scientist
    October 21st, 2007 | 17:48

…don’t cut my research articles! xD
    …let’s try again:

15.7% is lesser than 21.5% is lesser than and 33% is lesser than 43%.
We don’t want 15.7%, as it is too small to make use of DVD.
21.5% would be an acceptable choice, but hey, this is HD, let’s see what it offers! 43% is the best option.
33% doesn’t make sense at all. It is too big, bo fit on DVD and too small, to make proper use of hardware and have best possible quality.

What about connection speed? Who cares if you download movie in 1 or 10 days. I have a somewhat crappy connection (512 kbit), yet I would rather download 2x 4.3 GB HD-RIP than eg. 2.1 GB DVD-RIP (if the movie is worthy).

    ***Conclusion***:
HD rips should be compressed to 2x 4.3 GB (or *eventually* 1x 4.3 GB) so they can be easily stored and preserve very high quality. They should not be compressed to 6.6 GB as it doesn’t make any sense.

    Thank you.

    @mad.mad.scientist

No. You’re research is flawed. Both HD-DVD and Blu-ray DVD use different codecs for different movies when they are released. You have to take into account what format the source is. The studios have released films in MPEG2, h.264, and VC-1.

If you are ripping an MPEG2 to x.264, then you will get a good compression and shrink to DVD5 size. But some of the h.264 and VC-1 releases won’t get nearly as good of compression and you’ll need to rip to at least a DVD9 size to maintain the quality.

Where the hell do folk get off complaining about “old” movies being released by “the scene” i just dont get it:-

    1) IT`S NOT RLSLOG THAT RELEASES THEM. (THEY JUST REPORT WHAT IS RELEASED)

    2) IF YOU DONT LIKE WHATS BEING RELEASED THEN GET YOUR OWN SOURCES AND OWN GROUP AND RELEASE WHAT YOU WANT.

    3) SINCE WHEN DID “BRAND NEW” EQUAL QUALITY THIS MOVIE IS FAR BETTER THAN MOST OF THE GARBAGE RELEASED THESE DAYS.

I think that you (rlslog) should institute a ban for people posting stupid “why old movies” comments let them **** off to another site and it`ll make life better for the folk here who do appreciate movies/aps/games/whatever regardless of how old they are…

    Guys,

the movie Hunt for red october suffered from bad mastering quality since the first releases on VHS, laserdisc and DVD. The reason is the same as for DIE HARD 1+2 and Lethal Weapon. The director of photography was Jan de Bont and he likes to use low key (less light, low light photography) with lens flares and soft light. On cinema screens its working great but the Master copies from the 80/90s are now over a decade old and many suffered from aging.

I did saw Hunt for red october in several versions (DVD US, DVD UK, DVD germany and DVD japan. Remastered Laserdisc) also HDTV versions from UK, Japan and Russia….every copy was a “not very good” HD release. Everone was grainy…dark….had lack of sharpness. You cant compare gladiator with this film.

The only Chance is that Fox pictures invest money in a digital remastering process and even then…i would say the quality will only rise to “good-averge” quality.

    As for my experience:

I was a camera operator in the 90s in germany and worked the last 2 years in HDTV research on a german university. So i Can say I have fundemantal knowledge over Mastering processes.

    regards

    Alan
