Like the rest of you, I enjoy these recreations. Imagine what it's like to be an AVG survivor (there are five pilots still alive who flew the Tomahawk in combat against the Japanese) and see your first mission live again in full color!

It's a pity, though, that the History Channel didn't delve a bit into the actual events. At Mae Sot on January 3, the Tigers were credited with destroying four Japanese planes on the ground and three in the air (two for Jack Newkirk, one for Tex Hill). Actual damage: two Nakajima "Nates" damaged on the ground and one shot down. (The pilot was Warrant Officer Yokoyama, who would need two months to recover from his wounds.) This level of over-optimism was typical of western air forces during WWII.

For more on this subject, see "Flying Tigers: Claire Chennault and His American Volunteers, 1941-1942", just published by HarperCollins. Or look at http://www.FlyingTigersBook.com

This is a totally awesome series! When there's not much else on TV, I can also find entertainment in catching up on dog fights.
