The Golden Door 2006 DVDRip XviD-FRAGMENT

10 Wins. 6 Nominations. Titles as “Brilliant Work”, “So enjoyable” and “Superb acting” and 71% at both Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB. Do I need to say more? Italian romantic drama The Golden Door (or Nuovomondo in original) is simply a huge success and you shouldn’t miss it. Italian audio with English subs on 1 CD (would totally deserve 2 CDs though).

The story is set at the beginning of the 20th century in Sicily. Salvatore, a very poor farmer, and a widower, decides to emigrate to the US with all his family, including his old mother. Before they embark, they meet Lucy. She is supposed to be a British lady and wants to come back to the States. Lucy, or Luce as Salvatore calls her, for unknown reasons wants to marry someone before to arrive to Ellis Island in New York. Salvatore accepts the proposal. Once they arrive in Ellis Island they spend the quarantine period trying to pass the examinations to be admitted to the States. Tests are not so simple for poor farmers coming from Sicily. Their destiny is in the hands of the custom officers.

    It reminds me of the 2004 greek movie ”BRIDES” (greek: NYPHES)of M. Scorceze and P. Voulgaris. Moderately interesting plot (Brides), but similar story, a ship journey to New World, and also similar IMBD scoring.

    This lacks subtitles like most scene releases of foreign films these days – a hugely annoying trend. Anyone has them?

    Apart from that it’s one of the best films of recent years.

    I was looking at the cast list and was surprised to see Vincent Schiavelli listed. This was the second to last movie he made before he died.

  21. how to use subs w AVIs
    January 10th, 2008 | 10:53

    @19 jb:

    To use subs with an AVI file: file naming is the key, and both files have to reside in the same folder.

    Naming: if e.g. the avi file name is:
    great-movie-file.avi
    then the subs have to be named
    great-movie-file.language.fileextension
    where fileextension is either (most of the time) SRT or SUB or IDX/SUB or whatever.
