The end of Windows XP next Monday
Software giant Microsoft will stop selling its ubiquitous XP operating system on Monday. But that doesn’t mean the seven-year-old software won’t continue contributing to the company’s financial performance for years to come. Terminating XP was expected. It comes just 18 months after Redmond, Wash.- based Microsoft introduced a new, more advanced operating system called Vista. While the new system is powerful, upgrading means spending lots of time and money to rework applications designed to run XP specifically. As a result, some companies, including Microsoft partner Intel Corp, have balked at adopting Vista, preferring instead to continue using XP.
Though Monday will be the last day Microsoft sells XP or provides free support for the “hundreds of thousands” of computers that are estimated to run on it, the company has come up with a novel way to wring money from the aging operating system: It is killing XP but isn’t letting it die. One way Microsoft will still make money from XP is by charging to provide support. Because the software continues to be popular, Microsoft’s “extended” support program is sure to generate lots more revenue. Microsoft will offer the program at least through 2014. That will likely attract lots of big corporate customers. Meanwhile, Microsoft will make more money by supplying XP to computer makers Hewlett-Packard Co., Dell Inc. and others. Because Vista has had trouble making headway in the corporate market, computer makers have asked for “downgrade rights” – the right to continue offering XP on their notebook and desktop computers after.

Get a real computer. Get a mac.

“Linux all the way, windows for fisher price toys”
What an utterly moronic comment. It’s only been the world leader in operating systems for a decade or two now, after all! Tell you what, though – let me know when the absolutely massive range of Windows applications become available on Linux, and when I can run games like Crysis and Assassin’s Creed natively without emulation. Oh, and I don’t want to type any command line code to do that, either. Face it, Linux is only useful for legitimate technical professionals (e.g. web hosts) and teenage fanboys who’d love everyone else to think they have superior computing skills because they do everything with time consuming shell script.
LOL @ the suggestion that only a few “hundreds of thousands” of computers run XP.
#6 “im lovin it like maccas ay there cuz or wha, go get some that gunja there you little jargem ay”
Ladies and gents, I present the typical mac user.
boot camp
Blah Blah Blah… More useless old news…
who buys it anway lolz.
@7 – NICE ONE! i hugely agree with you! linux is a good OS but really of no use at all to the general computer user who just wants to play games and go on the net but it does have many uses to the professional IT people like you said.
#9 “Ladies and gents, I present the typical mac user.”
Yes spot on there roger, I quite agree with your suggestive comments that indeed mac users are like gunja. Windows users are obviously quite similar to cadburry. mmmm chocolate
I’d just like to get in before the inevitable flame war.
Mac and Windows are fine, but Linux? Come on. Even fanciful Linux users have to see that it’s only of real value to professionals, not casual users, script kiddies or gamers. Its main attractions are its lightweight nature, maximum security and open source code. But let’s review – the average user (yes, that’s probably YOU) does not need every port sealed off as you’re not running a large web server or sensitive business application from your computer. You really don’t need a lightweight OS, even if you hate loading times, because with fast, modern hardware such things become minimal anyway.
Or just get windows vista and stop whining.
I run vista and i had no problems what so ever, not with drivers/games/compability or anything else.
This isnt the old days when it got out, and the devs are catching up.
It’s only been the world leader in operating systems for a decade or two now,??
thats because its forced onto EVERY single fisher price PC sold.
get a PC and find a new OS to use with it and then you can have some respect.
Nmarez: I do love Windows over all the rest, but I must admit that Vista was a huge pain for me and many others. Probably only relevant to the “power users”, but a lot of my applications, which were admittedly a few years out of date, did not run properly. I also object to the massive re-design of the Explorer layout (where the f*ck is Common Tasks, Microsoft?) and other such lovely points.
I can see why normal users would like Vista: its safe, flashy and really simplistic to use… but you have to remember its mostly more advanced users that come on forums such as these and so a lot of the negativity online isn’t really representative of the real public opinion.
“thats because its forced onto EVERY single fisher price PC sold.”
I disagree. I’ve built every single one of my computers and not once have I been “forced” into purchasing anything. Why do you think Windows has such popularity on pre-made PC’s though? Because it’s good. In case you hadn’t noticed, Apple have been spitting out Macs for just as long as Windows has, so your excuse doesn’t work. People simply prefer Windows. Whether that’s because it’s “the groove” which the whole computing market has become comfortable with is pretty irrelevant… if people don’t want change, then clearly it works. I’ve tried Mac and various distros of Linux… but why the hell would I sacrifice 95% of my application compatibility and basically re-design my entire digital lifestyle just “to be different”? How stupid.
people don’t want change,
because people are lazy.
but why the hell would I sacrifice 95% of my application compatibility
exactly…. “buy windows or dont have a computer, thats ‘forced marketing’
Mac and Windows are fine, but Linux? Come on. Even fanciful Linux users have to see that it’s only of real value to professionals, not casual users,
theres hundereds of linux os’s out there not just industrial strength distro’s
MAC’s dont come into the topic at all. MACOS is built for the machine it comes with (every mac comes with a UNique copy of the OS.)
so comparing osx or leopard just proves that people dont know what they are talking about.
no matter how i hate vista, sooner or later i will use it
because of the DirectX 10 graphics… (I’m a gamer!)
Ugh why would anyone use Vista, it’s so bloated and slow compared to XP or 2003 and I don’t have an old PC.
There’s absolutely no useful features Vista has over XP, none.
I run Windows 2003 Enterprise R2 with Window Blinds, looks identical to Vista… oOoOoOOooo…
I just finished upgrading my MCSE cert to the newer MCITP for Server 2008, my class spent more time recovering from problems with the OS than actually doing course work in certain parts that were clearly rushed…
I did the whole Server 2k8 as a workstation thing, it’s alright once its stripped down, a little more responsive than Vista out of the box. IMO 2003 > XP > 2008 > Vista
FFS Windows 7 better kick some serious ass or I’m going to bust a cap in Bill’s. I’ll be using Server 2003 R2 x64 till then.

RIP WINDOWS XP – NEVER FORGET (POLAND)
@8 i thought the same thing when reading it
I am another one of these people who has tried Mac’s and various Linux distro….. Every time i came back to windows. Now i am running vista x64 ultimate and could not be happier. Looks beautiful, blazing fast, EVERYTHING just simply works.I did try to change my ways and be different but at the same i realized that it was stupid and makes no sense in denying the best OS out there. Give credit where credit is due…..You guys are missin out…
#20 dom “MAC’s dont come into the topic at all. MACOS is built for the machine it comes with (every mac comes with a UNique copy of the OS.)

You don’t know what you are talking about. The osx discs that come with a mac are locked to the model to prevent people from using it on other macs without paying for the OS. This is just like how a pre-packaged PC comes with restore/recovery discs that only work on that specific PC to prevent people from using it on another PC without having purchased the discs. lame dom lame.
Well, the “hundreds of thousands” bit is either a blatantly ignorant estimate or a flat out lie, and considering their current marketing agenda, Microsoft’s PR has every reason to want to put a downplaying spin on XP’s installed base and popularity. Still, about 90% of the world’s PCs run Windows OSes and out of those over 65% I believe are XP (plain and SP1-3).
Word to the wise, Windows Server 2008 converted to Workstation is 17% faster than Vista, missing the DRM and has Direct-X 10.
The ONLY game that I cannot run on Workstation 2008 is Halo 2 Vista. Imagine that?
None the less, I’ll be using my own nLited version of XP for years to come. XP slimmed down correctly is almost as fast as 2003 but provides much better compatibility.
@22
“There’s absolutely no useful features Vista has over XP, none.”
Breadcrumb navigation in Explorer, MUCH faster file access than XP.
File indexing offers MUCH faster searches.
Fcku Micro Crack, Mac All The way . Vista Garbage
XP R.I.P
Get with the time people, sticking with ANY OS too long ain’t healthy..
HEADCRABS!!
I will continue to run an ethos build of xp until MS wakes up.
J. anyone remember ME, vista is running a close second to the hugest POS ever.
Will they keep supporting SP3?
Bec I got problems and so I will email them today yet, so it`s Sunday. O.o
is there any reason expect dx 10 to switch to vista ? err nope
I’ve yet to touch a PC with Vista. So I do not know much about it. I run opensuse (A linux distro) on everything. Only thing I’m missing is Visio, which I run from a vmware xp-partition.
After 5 years with linux I have around 100 specified scripts that do everything like queueing for filesharers, torrent-cheaters, backups, spiders etc. I do not game much though, but older games like orange-box works fine through vmware. I rather like a smaller more compact windows-OS so it gives even less overhead in vmware.
If I find one single interesting software that wont run only on vista, I consider setting up a vmware partition for it.
@Bonzo
Running apps in vmware is sad! Very sad!
Tweak your Vista and you will have no problems! Mine is faster than XP! I get 11000 score in 3DMark’06 and 12000 in Vista64! Figure that! And 3DMark’06 is a 32 bit application! LOL! This happened after I installed the latest drivers from nvidia!
Why RIP XP ?? ThePirateBay i’m sure …. will love to continue to share it
You can learn how to tweakit from here!
http://www.blackviper.com
The first thing I do after I Install Vista is disable System Resore, Indexing, Readyboost! Keep your start-up clean (only antivir and firewall)! Then go kill every service that you don’t wan’t!
BTW:”To begin with, they thought system restore would be enough, but they found that there were people in the world that were really that stupid, so opted to go for the babysitter OS approach instead.” -LOL- UAC
“@30 younger fellow than before
File indexing offers MUCH faster searches.”
but that slows down files operations on hdd, and what you do more often? search or copy/delete files? this is big disatvantage.
“…free support for the “hundreds of thousands” of computers that are estimated to run on it…”
yea right, right now there is atleast 1 million people online using XP.
downgrade more like upgrade compared to crapsta
It would be interesting to do a survey of all the systems at Microsoft and its associated companies and see if they’re all running Vista now.
VISTA SUCKS A$$ !!!1
XP > Vista
win xp professional FTW
Vista > XP & OSX
XP sucks balls, thank God it is about to go the way of the dinosaurs.
DIE VISTA… DIE!!!
My comp is about 4 years older then my roommates. I use xp he uses vista. alot of games still run better on my pc. Vista would be good for people like my parents that just use it for email and browsing beastiality sites.
I’m waiting for the Embedded 2009 (hoping that it works great) made with the xp kernel… Vista is a virus

This is my source, my scene news source. No one cares what you know, it’s not like everybody knew what you know.
I dunno what the problem with Vista is. I run ultimate on my machine and play games on it all the time without issue. Even managed to push it to run Crysis… I’m kindda peeved that they’re making another Windows so soon after I actualy forked out cash to pay for Vista Ultimate :@
Only linux!
I use XP Black. It’s on the newsies, go get it and see how XP is supposed to run.
When I need to program and such Ubuntu Heron is generally a sweet way to go. Interfaces like XP and lets you get yer poop done.
oh, and BTW consoles are for games. PC’s lost out to that a long time ago.
xp is the best
xp is the worst just installed and benchmarked vista wow
vista ftw
I like my Amiga 500
I’ve never understood the Linux VS Windows argument. Umm guys, Linux is FREE. Just dual-boot it. Linux can be for more than just the IT professional. And it may well replace Windows if Microsoft keeps focusing on advertising instead of its core business(WINDOWS, I’m lookin at you Vista(bloated xp with new gui)). On any linux distro w/o a gui you can do things like cat /dev/mem and see how much memory is being used etc. Yeah the commands take a while to learn if you are new but not that long at all. I come from the MS-DOS days so I’m used to a shell(cli) for interacting with PC’s. It’s a lot faster. The only reason I don’t switch to Linux is because everyone uses Windows! Its ironic. And because everyone uses Windows game coders target the Windows platform. It is just as easy to code a game(if not easier since you have access to the OS source code) for Linux as it is Windows. On Windows though you aren’t going to find the programs and scripts that can be downloaded that allow you to do things with your PC that you’ve never done before(Host a internet radio station from home or on your web server) etc.
Download VMWare Workstation or Server(free) and run a copy of Backtrack. It’s a small linux distro with an iso the size of a CD. Check out the tools on there.

Who here even uses the Microsoft official online support?? the only change is going to be that there will never be any more service packs but who cares?? I WILL continue to use XP untill the new version 7 comes out then i will give that a try as vista really does suck! and all those who think its “fast” clearly have no clue and if you compare vista’s speeds to XP’s speeds then there is a BIG difference!
vista sucks major, user-friendly my as# , the best MS OS at the mom is win xp with all the sp and patches there are (best integrated before the install, to minimize eventual problems);
all Ms is doing now is force vista on the market because most of the ppl and companies prefer XP over Vista, why change when xp is so much better on performance and all only without dx10 that was also a marketing strategy employed by MS to force the users to buy vista so that ms can make some more money (those cheap shi#heads) i have a 5-6 years old pc with 512mb ram and 128mb ram grafic and 2,2Ghz cpu and no problems at running all the programs i need (even some games, but mine is not a game pc i must say); tried vista and the next day changed back to xp for the damn vista wanted/needed more resourses and nothing worked the way it should .. so don’t come and spur all that bullsh#t about vista being better and superior over xp – still i have hope about ms win7 and from what i’ve read i hope it will be as good as xp or even better and nothing like vista [vista is not a virus, virll are small compact, mostly unnoticable and with a good source code, vista is a bug, that's what it is, an expensive ms bug]

stop selling it lol…. like i ever bought it just like all there software its glitched, bugged, crashes and a load of other crap that i can’t think of right now.
Upgrading vista to xp is recommended. I will be using xp when I want a ms-os. Otherwise my beloved linux is my OS of choice.
Just tweak Windows 2003 and it does one hell of a job as a workstation.
Here is a simply guide on how to make your Windows 2003 Server into a workstation (Covers the most simple tweaks).

and for 2008:
http://www.msfn.org/win2k8/
Vista Ultimate is awesome really visual and if you want to run games you can get some gigs of mem (are really cheap)a new micro and a good video card or maybe you can stay with xp and play old directx 8 games.
#68 DirectX8 games? wat??
Huah… finally?!
And for those who don’t get it… WinXp …. or for that case – any “Windows” of any version… since 3.11 – which by standards was the best windows… since it did what it set out to do… which is an OS with Windows! wooohooo! cept’ that… not much had changed cept’ unneeded support tools and drivers… unclear disk space usage… (about 5 GB unclear these day no!? ) … when all we asked is just to use a window and a mouse for what we need… hmmm… sorry… no.. the MS Windows saga … is was and ever will be… the crappiest and the biggest moneymaker for not even stupid customers but all of us are since we let them do it to the corporate’s around us… it sux! and it just from some reason don’t get better but only byte bigger (hard drive wise… ) … when will they just make an OS the does the job without sucking our pockets and disk space – make us replace computers..etc….
okay had to let it out.. im fine now with my vista (sob)
“Face it, Linux is only useful for legitimate technical professionals (e.g. web hosts) and teenage fanboys who’d love everyone else to think they have superior computing skills because they do everything with time consuming shell script.”
Or its for people who can’t afford the latest hardware, or the license for windows (a lot of people outside the U.S.) Shell script? Have you tried a modern distro of Linux? There is no reason to use shell scripts in Linux, unless you want to. You can surf the internet, check email, work on Microsoft office documents, etc. all without ever opening the terminal. Most modern Linux distros are more user friendly than Windows. I think you need to get your facts straight.
#71
Please link me to a Linux distro more user friendly, I fail to find one… (Dont say ubunto or kubunto cuz they aren’t).
http://www.pclinuxos.com/
Been using this distro for about a year on my school laptop. Does everything I need from an operating system. I’m using the GNOME 2008 edition atm.
Also, what do you mean Ubuntu/Kubuntu (yes with u’s on the end) are not user friendly? You have difficulty with them? What was the last release you used?
@7
“Oh, and I don’t want to type any command line code…”
Dude please stop it, you are one of those people who likes to think they know it all but actually live in a world of ignorance. Ubuntu is a flavor of linux and its getting very powerful everyday. It can do cooler stuff than Vista and its 100% free. The only prob is u can’t play games in it. Typing commands for Linux was 8+ years ago trend.
There are several ways of playing Windows Games on Ubuntu, and other Linux distro’s.
Cedega is prolly the best one, and there are free versions of WINE too.
http://www.transgaming.com/
This is OLD NEWS!!! No one has really bought XP in a few years!!!
The title of this post is VERY misleading!! You can find XP ANYWHERE!!! And they are supporting it until 2014!!!!
Pointless post!
vista is a step back guys
like mac computers i promised my self never to buy a apple product
#73
I said more user friendly than Windows, Ubuntu is not.
Haven’t tried pclinuxos though.
#78
User friendly is a matter of opinion (largely dependent on the user, dohhh).
So, that being said, I guess you are entitled to your opinion. Let’s agree to disagree.
Its about bloody time.
Id like to see you peeps trying to play all the current games on linux or mac.. good luck
It was a pain in the ass migrating from Win 98 to XP with compatabilities problems.
Vi$ta made it MUCH worse. Are you really sure you want to run this program? a few thousand times get boring. Oh BTW we dont have that problem with Linux
Ah yes Vi$ta credentials, after about 1/2 hour wait.
How many games want/NEED an admin account to run ? Punkbuster anyone ?
Driver problems anyone ? X32 / X64 compatabilty problems anyone ?
M$ fukked up. Simple. lets see if they fix with Win 7.
#81
Did it ever occur to you the people using a free operating system don’t have a thousand dollars to build a gaming rig? In other words, I’m pretty sure they don’t care that they can’t play Crysis.
VISTA sucks! seriously no one wants some stupid new memory hogging op…with all of ms crappy secuirity issuses. id rather have a nice simple op like xp that i have been using for years and that i know how it works
yeah true man who cares about crysis i tried it and it was cool but nothing special. not to mention i dont know one person with a gaming rig who uses vista let alone anyone that uses vista. i know one guy who got a labtop with vista on it but i havent seen him in ages.
MS-DOS, Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, Server 2008 ALL SUCK.
Linux variants are ALL COOL.
