Number 13, you do realize that both shows went off air because neither Colbert or Stewart wanted to cross the picket lines, right? Both of them are part of the WGA and therefore were on strike as well.

To clarify for people like Sean (#20), neither Stewart or Colbert went off-air for the entire duration of the strike. They soon returned to the screen sans writers to continue presenting irrespective of the continued strike action taking place outside. In fact they gathered a great deal of publicity on account of this fact.
