Here we’ve got another DVD quality of the movie, this time a rip instead of a screener – again from scene group ESPiSE. The screener was released back in mid-april (The Children of Huan Shi LIMITED DVDSCR XviD-ESPiSE). This release is unfortunately without AC3 audio, which is a shame. Nevertheless, great release.

Plot: Based on real events, The Children of Huang Shi is a story set against war-torn China in the 1930’s. The film centers on a young English journalist (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), an American nurse (Radha Mitchell) and the leader of a Chinese partisan group (Chow Yun Fat) who meet in desperate and unexpected circumstances. Together they rescue 60-orphaned, children leading them on an extraordinary journey, across hundreds of miles of treacherous terrain, through snow-covered mountains and an unforgiving desert. Along the way they discover the true meaning of love, responsibility and courage.

    @2 Good movie when I saw it on the first DVDSCR release, but the problem with that release was no one had any decent subs for the Japanesse parts. The subs that came with that release were f’d up so no one could fix it. I hope this release will have some decent subs…downloading now…will report back

    OK, I’m lucky 11
    @2 I will chime in here. I think this is a good way for people who wouldn’t normally see ‘Nanking’ (the amazing & brutal documentary about this topic) to hear the story of Nanking, China and the Japanese invasion, albeit through the eyes of one guy who ends up in an unlikely role with kids.
    I’m not spoiling anything, just know that I think it’s very good, but probably biased from seeing ‘Nanking’ Docu, which is the harshest, most eye-opening thing I think you could see about a topic that we are mostly jaded towards; WWII

    See This if you can’t see Nanking; It’s a Hollywood-ish version, but still better that 7.1 if you ask me.

    @12 RangeRover… I have Nanking, but haven’t watched it yet. What about the idea of watching this and Nanking, in that order? Or would you recommend I don’t bother with this? or was Nanking not a good documentary? Not sure whether to bother downloading this, but Nanking is obviously heavy stuff that I have to be in the right frame of mind to watch!

    @2 – well, this download didn’t come with any subs; for a 1cd release, pic looks very sharp at native resolution, but at higher res, you can see some blocking during action scenes or landscape shots where small details are lost, but still way better then expected. Only let down was no subs; at least from the megaupload download. If I knew there was no subs, I would of waited.

    @15 Nanking was an atrocious documentary. It had about 10 minutes of good footage (most of it was pretty unrelated to the actual incident) and the rest of it was completely destroyed by some B-class American actors whose impersonations made it all look like a cheap theater.

    Here, I just saved you 100 minutes of your time and gave you ten times more information about the event. Take my advice, don’t bother with Nanking.

    By the way, this movie is not really related to the war or to Nanjing. It’s much more… local. If you ask me, it’s worth watching but not that great. If you still think of watching that documentary as well, it really doesn’t matter in that order you watch them.

    For anyone who hasn’t seen this movie Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Chow Yun-Fat and Michelle Yeoh are in their usual top form and therefore make this movie well worth watching. Be warned you will need English subs for the Mandarin parts.
