Teenagers ignore CDs, report says

48% of teenagers bought no CDs at all in 2007, up from 38% in 2006. Music downloads continue to grow, though, with iTunes leading the way. For the first time last year, nearly half of all teenagers bought no compact discs, a dramatic increase from 2006, when 38% of teens shunned such purchases, according to a new report released Tuesday. The illegal sharing of music online continued to soar in 2007, but there was one sign of hope that legal downloading was picking up steam. In the last year, Apple Inc.’s iTunes store, which sells only digital downloads, jumped ahead of Best Buy Co. to become the No. 2 U.S. music seller, trailing Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

That could be hopeful news for the music industry, which has been scrambling in recent years to replace its rapidly disappearing CD sales with music sold online. The number of CDs sold in the U.S. fell 19% in 2007 from the previous year while sales of digital songs jumped 45%, Nielsen SoundScan said. The number of people buying music legally from online music stores jumped 21% to 29 million last year from 24 million in 2006, according to the study by NPD Group, a market research firm in Port Washington, N.Y. NPD declined to release figures on individual retailers’ sales or their market shares, so it is impossible to know how close iTunes sales are to Wal-Mart’s. The NPD market ranking of music retailers is based on a study of the music habits of Americans 13 and older over the last week.

I don’t blame the artist for their angst – I sure do blame the RIAA for it’s indifferent actions ;)

Good article, Martin – thanks :)

lol, there’s been so many of these reports proving both sides of the argument, they’re just plain useless. Enough reports, do something about it, something that’ll stick, or stfu.

I bought my last CD in 2000 when I discovered Napster and then iTunes. I buy my music online and occasionally download torrents of hard-to-find pieces.

Pardon me, but where is the music? Somewhere between the arguments of DRM, anti-piracy, RIAA & ol’ daddy jacksons’s fart in neverland, music itself is lost! There was no real music in 2007. Even icons like Madonna, Kayen West, Robbie Wlliams, Eminem, … (fill in your fav artists name) they all souded so bland!

  11. Joe Public
    February 28th, 2008 | 15:28

No offense to these so-called ‘icons’ like Kanye West, Robbie Williams, Madonna, Eminem (laugh)… Their music sucks IMHO..

I haven’t purchased a real cd in like 2 years, and that last one was a discounted version of Mozart’s Requiem at Cirucuit City…

I did do that get 10 for like a penny and then skipped out on the purchasing of the other required 5 cd’s like 3 years ago…

The last time I plunked down $18.00 for a cd for real was like hmmm…. back in 1995… For Sting’s Ten Summoner’s Tales..

There hasn’t been any decent music out since at least 1995-97… at least not decent enough to actually buy… I don’t blame downloading one bit, all of my downloaded music is pre-2000 stuph anyways… I blame these suckass ‘artists’… and the fools that follow them (yeah YOU)..

    :P

This is bad for big rockstars and big labels… but very good for music over all.

20 years ago, an underground local band would release a record on an independent label with very limited distribution and high overhead costs. Even underground bands with national followings had a hard time getting their music into local record stores outside the big cities… and again the costs of pressing, packaging and shipping limited the reach of many labels.

Now an underground band, with a good word of mouth, can sell or give their music to fans anywhere, anytime, with no extreme overhead costs.

The playing field wil never be level between the major labels and the independents… but it’s getting closer.

just like the 8 track and the cassette, compact disc is coming to the end of it’s life span. they take up space; they damage easily; and they are expensive as hell, especially if you only like one track out of the entire record. Long live MP3!

If you want to support the artists, attend concerts, and buy their merchandise from their official page. The only reason anyone wouldn’t buy a CD is because they are poor, or just that pathetic. The fact is if you could afford it and had a real life you wouldn’t have time to be constantly downloading things. Prices may be ridiculous to some, however I hear the same argument when owning an Alienware PC. Don’t complain because you are too POOR… GET A JOB

I’m against downloading music. It doesn’t bother me to download movies, but it bothers me to download music. Is it really that hard to go out and buy a $10 CD? It hurts the artists. The bands make all their money by merchandise and CD’s – There are several interview’s that state that. The artists put food on their table because of you buying their merchandise and CD’s. I’m not a fanboy, I’ve got a HUGE CD collection. I’ve got bands that you probably have never heard of, but you’d enjoy them. I go out and buy CD’s, even if I don’t know the band. I give ‘em a try. Rock & Metal only.

There’s also an idea going around, where internet companies are thinking of charging 10 extra dollars, just because people download music instead of buying it. As I stated, I don’t download music. So I don’t really wanna pay that 10 extra dollars.

Yeah, it has become quite the epidemic..I was watching tv the other night and a few artists only had 10-15 million dollar homes and 5 or 6 cars each…some of them didn’t even keep the personal chef on staff all day, but only at meal time. All because of the people downloading music. I hate to watch them suffer.

The poster who said he doesn’t agree with downloading music illegally but will download movies is a bit of an idiot. So it is OK to basically steal movies but not music?.. why the difference?. Movie stars are no different to pop/rockstars and the big movie companies are just as bad as the big music companies. In fact the music companies are even worse. A movie star sent around the world to promote a film does so at the expense of the movie company or the local distributer, they pay for everything. A music star has to pay for everything themselves, even their huge concerts are paid for by themselves not the music companies. Travel expenses etc. are all deducted from the money a star makes before his/her or their royalties are paid. The music companies are very, very corrupt and incompetent even more so than the movie companies.

I have a good job, I can afford CDs but why the hell should I pay for a 10 or 12 track CD at ten or fifteen pounds if I only want one or two tracks from it?.

Why the hell should I have to wait two, three, six months or sometimes even a year to see a film compared to other countries?. In the days of high speed internet access it should be fairly easy for a movie company to distribute movies around the world at roughly the same time to everywhere.

The record companies have at last woken up to the possibilities of legal downloads and are beginning to get it right, lowering prices, releasing at the same time around the world, removing highly restrictive DRM. It is about time the movie and TV companies did the same. Download a non DRM MP3 file and you can pretty much guarantee it will play on your computer, Ipod, Zune or any other MP3 player that supports MP3. The same cannot be said of movie and TV show downloads. Often movies from one company have a proprietry codec, or have restrictive DRM so the films you paid for are all lost if the company goes bust, or shuts down it’s service (a la Google last year).

Home piracy is killing the industries?.. I don’t bloody think so. Hollywood studios announced record profits last year, stars got paid more than ever, cinema attendances were up last year. Hardly killing the industry at all.

I download music and movies for convenience (both legal and illegal), to get the latest releases (sometimes months before the cinema release), to get round censorship and for various other reasons not because I cannot afford it and I am sure most people on here are the same.

    @ 25

It doesn’t hurt movie stars. They get paid while working on their movies. 1 million in their pocket today, 1 million in their pocket tomorrow. But the music business is different. You don’t get paid daily or weekly. You get paid monthly, unlike movie stars. I know this for a fact, because when I was in my late 20’s, I got involved with a band. We thought our record company was ripping us off, with the way our payment was settled until we found out, we were just getting paid like regular rockstars. Nothing more, nothing less, always on time. I’ve never been a movie star, so I don’t anything about about payment they offer. If you were a musician, would you rather have people buy your music and support you or would you rather perfer people downloading it illegaly and not supporting you at all? You are right about paying for concerts. Every band/artist pays for their concert. You wanna play, you gotta pay. All the record companies do is record your music and get it out in the world.

    ————————————————————-

As I stated, internet companies are thinking of charging 10 extra dollars. So it’s kinda like, your paying for your internet and the $10 is paying for every song you download. But as I found out on our evening news, instead of paying monthly/yearly they wanna start busting your bucks every 2 weeks.

I don’t believe that downloaders are 100% to blame here as copy protection should have been compulsory and constantly updated since a cd could be ripped to a pc. I hate to sound old here but I hate what radio has done to the world and these silly TV radio stations. How much power is being wasted listening to a radio station on a TV set when it could just be played on a radio. Sky, Virgin etc should be forced to stop them in the interest of energy conservation. There will be no wonder if the world went into an energy crisis. The music on the radio never changes as if the DJ has left the station with a jukebox on shuffle and repeat. If I worked at a radio station I would probably blow my brains out having to listen to the same stuff every day and say I like it when we all know its just for a little green and a guest appearance. Because of this alternative artists aren’t being noticed and are missing out. If more alternative artists were played then the music industry would be revived with a little dignity. If more appealing music was played then i might hear something I like and go out and buy the deluxe cd with the added music video or whatever. It’s gotta be better than hearing that annoying song you hate for the 80th time this month when the airwaves could be put to better usage.Who wants to go out and buy a cd if you’ve heard it 500 times. It’s crazy

Real music lovers BUY cd`s (even vinyl!!)
    1. They sound better than mp3`s
    2. A cd is not a harddisk, so it won`t crash on you
and your precious music will be maintained. (agree with no.36)

And when your sick of all this so called “sh*te music”.
Don`t go mainstream, don`t listen to the f*cking radio
too often, where they rather play the same things over
and over again, instead of real good stuff.

Digital music is nice when you`re travelling, sporting or working on your computer, but cd`s and vinyl rule!

    Cheers!!
