RS links already dead.

Paleeze, non further Mactel-Wintel discussion. There is nothing to discuss. It is a waste of time. Really there are more important things in life then discuss why you use this or that OS. Who cares anyway....

Take what I'm about to say with a grain of salt, because it's been years since I've used this program (my last Mac was an Mac Pro 9600 - or something like that). Anyway, unless they had a major restructuring, this software - as it was back then - was a sneaky little system destroyer. It had all of this fancy lights and magic going on, gave you lots of "insight"; even had you believing it actually made progress "fixing" your system. Then you turn it on and find that it has completely obliterated everything. I've had no less that 4 machines so completely trashed by Techtool that I had to do a complete reformat, and couldn't even access the drives from an external boot disk!

But maybe things have changed? I've been a Windows user ever since Apple's bankruptcy (just before the first G3's and iMacs came out) so who knows? One thing that keeps me believing there probably isn't any miraculous improvement is I had a similar experience with Norton - but it's problems carried over to the Windows platform (trashed every Mac and PC I owned from a Mac Performa to a Windows 2000 PC.

These are old experiences, so maybe tey don't apply... but then again, if they are just re-using the same old code...

@ #18 and to backup the opinions of #19, I have been using legit paid versions of it for well over 5 years. It's an excellent program, and has no equal imho by another manufacture. Micromat, who makes this program has a nifty Firewire based version that comes on it's own portable Firewire based flash drive. It boots off the external drive and allows you to conduct triage, repair, etc from the external drive.

Zenzio, it's very useful for diagnosing if there's a hardware failure on your mac. You can boot from a dvd image of techtool and it runs tests on memory, hard disk, motherboard..that kind of thing.
Always in my mac toolbox.

Is there anyone around with real experience using this software? I would like to know if it is really useful and if it is worth it installing this.

@Jako

Are you being naive or plain stupid? If you don't backup what you are saying without doing some research then do me a favor stop using the internet it's not for you.

Stop using your Mac. You're giving Mac users a bad name. I must admit though that there are some bugs here and there but for the most part its just as stable running a variant of Windows or Linux or BSD or whatever.

If you still don't get it Google is your best friend. If you don't know whether it's not possible to search it in Google then there's no cure for ya.

You run OSX on a laptop?
I highly doubt that...

(Don't get my wrong, I'm a Mac user myself (MacBook), I know that it's technically possible to run OSX on Intel-based systems, but if you have at least a clue of what you're talking about, you have to admit that it is _not_ possible to have a stable OSX running without bugs on a non-Apple computer... and much less on a laptop.)

To each his own...

I run a Mac, Vista, XP and Linux in my lappy and each one can pretty much accomplish what you want to do. Bottomline is, just use whichever OS you prefer ans stop bashing someone else's preference just because you don' want it.
