its basically a grown up version of iphone…apart from the touch screen it owns the iphone in all aspects..be it camera, open source os, hardware keyboard. iphone has the multitouch thingy on a capacitive touch screen which are not really the best to have to a long run..why do u think the rest are all sticking to resistive touch screens..so they can use stylus for handwriting recog..and obviously longer life..

if u like steve jobs telling you which app u should not install, or snooping on ur phone or a “phone” without complete messaging, a “smartphone” that cannot copy/paste, a “multimedia phone” that doesnt have stereo bluetooth for music, video recording and a sub 3mp cam (G1 doesnt have it either)..a “touch phone” which recogs only finger swipes and no handwriting, yeah you should stick to your iphone!

personally i think nokia 5800 will be better then both iphone and g1..winmo is way to worked up so it gets buggy, osx is way too closed so its a non-starter..symbian is the perfect balance i guess..ton of apps..and great in resource management.

the hardware specs may not be jawdropping, but the software IS the reason to buy one. just check out some of the apps developed for the android market (http://code.google.com/android/adc_gallery/). once it comes out you’ll see plenty of other manufacturers copycatting the g1 or adopting android.

after having used nearly every device on the market i can say IMO the g1 is the one i’ve been most impressed with. the only real problem with it is that i’m sure dumb people will find creative ways to break things and then get mad at the phone.

@2, samsung and other companies are releasing 8mp phones actually, but keep in mind the jumps in resolution from 2-3-5-8mp are pretty miniscule.

My “oldish” N82 does all the things this new phone does and more, only thing I miss is a touchscreen, it has a 5mp cam with Xenon flash (really great quality), wi-fi, great OS, GPS etc. Totally underwhelmed, I’ll probably end up getting the Nokia N96 or N85 when my contract expires soon, as they look far better than anything by Apple or this new “Google” phone

Yes, HTC and T-Mobile are doing some stupid things to counteract the purpose of an open mobile platform. However, getting past some of this, and assuming you are smart enough to know to unlock your phone ASAP:

*This phone will run an OPEN operating system.*

What does this mean? Features included at the start are the tip of the iceberg. It’s liking a fresh OS install on your computer — add to it, make it yours. You will see countless improvements/modifications/*HACKS* as time goes on… and Google has already stated that it will NOT be taking posts off of its marketplace — so count on seeing unlocking apps and other ‘questionable’ apps right from the start.

This phone is freedom. Imagine being able to use VOIP/wifi when available instead of some premium data plan (99% of my time I’m inside wifi, so obviously this might benefit me more than most)… this kind of freedom is the exact thing that mobile carriers don’t want, and T-mobile is being sure not to tout these abilities.

Hopefully this phone will be the first of many.

Nokia’s N-Series are still the best mobile phones with great features. It’s not the Android or the iPhone that will change this.

and another thing: I see no use for a phone with a zillion functions when its battery lasts one day, so, before anything else, I would like to see a company to improve on that.

@2 You know very well that pictures taken with mobiles suck big time, it’s not a matter of Mp’s. If you want quality, get a camera, not a mobile with a camera.

well… megapixels don’t make the camera, picture quality depend on much more then that (will the camera have “flash”? etc.)
From this text above i can’t see why the phone is selling, is it cheap? The functions listed are not exactly unheard of

Jez, why do people love this phone? It has got to be one of the ugliest phones I’ve seen since the bad old days of the Nokia 1610

To bballer, I’m no Apple fanboy, but you have to admit that the iphone’s sucky 2MP camera outshines a hell of a lot of 5MP phone camera’s out there….although don’t mention the video…..agg

@2 That’s because it’s a midrange phone with very decent pricing. Also a 3MP camera can still make very decent pictures. (I believe iPhone has just 2MP)

Samsung is doing 7 Megapixel in it’s last mobile :S
anyways features don’t look that WOW all regualr but maybe there’r counting on GOOGLE’s special app
