Symantec unveils Norton 2008 software

Today Symantec released new and improved versions of its popular Norton Internet Security and Norton AntiVirus products. Of special interest is the addition of Norton Identity Safe to the Norton Internet Security suite. Norton Identity Safe implements concepts introduced in the Symantec Identity Initiative to protect users against identity theft and loss of personal information. The new products have been redesigned for better performance and now include One-Click Support, introduced with Norton 360. One-Click Support starts with built-in troubleshooting routines that can automatically fix problems and escalates as needed to phone support, e-mail, or free live chat support, all within the product’s user interface.

Even more than the 2007 version, this version makes its own security decisions rather than interrupting the user to ask questions they’re not qualified to answer. LiveUpdate will also work in the background, without bothering the user unless it specifically runs into a problem. In addition to One-Click Support, both products include the new BrowserDefender technology, which protects the browser against exploits found on malicious or hacked Web sites. According to Symantec, BrowserDefender can block attacks that target the browser using ActiveX controls, JavaScript, or VBScript, even when the attacking code is obfuscated. Both products also rely on Symantec’s SONAR behavioral detection technology to identify and neutralize malicious code even before Symantec’s research group has devised a malware signature. Expect these new releases very soon. :)

Personally I would rather have a virus (or several… hundred) than a Norton product, virii are easier to remove.

Symantec’s Norton utilities was once a great, and potent stuff… approx 10-15 years ago.
Now, I am very happy with my Kaspersky 7.0
But I use Spywareterminator and Ad-aware too, and this triumvirate offers really good virus, spyware, adware protection.

    *sigh*

“this version makes its own security decisions rather than interrupting the user to ask questions they’re not qualified to answer”

This is the true M$ way. So now, if you install Vista, then add Norton to it, you will no longer be in control of your machine. The damn thing will do everything for you (actually, instead and against you), in a way that you don’t want things to be done. Welcome to the age of AS! (artificial stupidity)

I know it’s just news, but why in the world would you want to announce a new Symantec product, Martin?

  22. jvb
    August 29th, 2007 | 12:22

I use Debian with SELinux and encryption for both / and swap (never forget to encrypt swap, it’s an easy exploit)

(and also OpenBSD, secure by default) ;)

    Norton is indeed very bad.
Does their actually exist a virus that slows down your system as much as a default Norton setup.

  23. dsrs
    August 29th, 2007 | 12:32

no matter how many times you tell people that norton IS worse than any virus, they will never believe it until they discover for themselves that the ONLY way to remove norton from your system is a complete reinstall of windoz

  27. Norton Virus Maximus
    August 29th, 2007 | 13:10

Yes, Norton was useful back in the day. By today’s standard, the Norton line is a dinosaur, an ineffective curmudgeon that keeps putting on a new suit to cover up the fact that he hasn’t showered in ages.

I assume Symantec can stay in business selling this invasive bloatware by getting people who already have it installed to purchase cheap upgrades, selling bulk corporate licenses to companies and institutions that don’t know better and your general computer illiterate AOL luser-types, which still number in the millions.

  31. Jhonny
    August 29th, 2007 | 13:21

    loler I completely agree.

    The article should have read:

Today Symantec released new and improved versions of its popular Norton Internet Security and Norton AntiVirus products that will further compromise your system behaviour meanwhile providing you with that authentic false sense of security since 1990. Of special interest is the addition of Norton Identity Safe to the Norton Internet Security suite which will ensure that your confidential information will be spread securely around the internet and especially to Microsoft so they can rip you off without you knowing it.

  32. Jhonny
    August 29th, 2007 | 13:24

Oh yeah, dont forget the special interest new feature: anti anti-installation function which will prohibit you from uninstalling the application and is low-level format safe. It will even install itself automagically on that new PC you bought in order to get rid of the program on your old pc. Norton will never leave your home without your pc.

  33. Norton Virus Exodus
    August 29th, 2007 | 13:28

Specially designed with the Vista user in mind, “this version makes its own security decisions rather than interrupting the user to ask questions they’re not qualified to answer.”

This is an exceptionally useful feature as upon installation and activation it will automatically detect itself as malware and initiate a partition format, cleansing the system of both Vista and itself, allowing the user to learn from his previous mistakes.

And you all thought the product had no useful features…

  34. August 29th, 2007 | 13:30

I love norton best anti-virus I ever used: When I had norton 2005, I installed it then had to uninstall it then I had to reformat cause it erased my system files.. it was so great cause it was like protecting me :).

Well if you need a AV in the first place you must be a muppet every virus that comes out has new properties and new ways of infecting your system which no av can fix straight away that why they are called new virus’s now if you think that one is better than another that is your opion but they all have week point when it comes to a new virus none can do anything about it simple as.

Stop acting like kids saying mine is better than yours and mine is bigger than yours when really its up to a user half of you lot probably work for nod32 and kaspersky or just want to!

If you cannot fix your own infections then you shouldn’t have a pc at all.

One day they may include a backdoor in their software so that a reformed Soviet Union or Red China could hack each and every one of us.Don’t trust the wolf in sheep clothings.Stay firm and alert.

    To Stupidity :

    Read this : :

“Speaking to Computing at the anti-virus lab’s headquarters, located in
a totalitarian-looking ex-communist party building on the outskirts of
Moscow, Kaspersky scrolls through a list of hundreds of new viruses
that have been caught using virus-detecting ‘honey-pot’ computers over
    the past five days.”

    See ?? SEE ??!?

They say ex-communist party building but this is a ruse and a front by the KGB !!!.Kaspersky will be the driving force behind the reformation of the Soviet Union and the new cold war that is coming.

Just like the Chinese used spies to infiltrate the USA , the new Soviet Union will do the same by using Kaspersky !!!!

    lol @ ludwigvb 57

The United Nations, which defines illiteracy as the inability to read and write a simple message in any language, has conducted a number of surveys on world illiteracy. In the first survey (1950, pub. 1957) at least 44% of the world’s population were found to be illiterate. A 1978 study showed the rate to have dropped to 32.5%, by 1990 illiteracy worldwide had dropped to about 27%, and by 1998 to 16%. However, a study by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) published in 1998 predicted that the world illiteracy rate would increase in the 21st cent. because only a quarter of the world’s children were in school by the end of the 20th cent. The highest illiteracy rates were found in the less developed nations of Africa, Asia, and South America; the lowest in Australia, Japan, North Korea, and the more technologically advanced nations of Europe and North America. Using the UN definition of illiteracy, the United States and Canada have an overall illiteracy rate of about 1%. In certain disadvantaged areas, however, such as the rural South in the United States, the illiteracy rate is much higher.

silly comments, from a bunch of kids,do you guys realise these companys create viruses,to sell their products, and Norton is the biggest virus creator of them all,i know because my friend worked for them, fact, dangerous trogans, similar viruses damage your computer, theses companys know their own creative viruses, thus getting you to buy their product,in any country, norton is rubbish, stay away from these products,by purchasing them you give them the money to create new viruses, stop and think, new update products come with new viruses, only way to sell their products, stay safe on the net, stay away from them.

  78. August 30th, 2007 | 17:50

Symantec has been known to backdoor its software, a simple google search will tell you this, switch to ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com and check out my site http://ubuntu-unleashed.blogspot.com and you wont ever need an antivirus again!

Get nod32! It is small and easy. A little special UI but nothing to worry about as it never bother you and works excellent without any problem :D really happy i found this nice AV.

Kaspersky and Nod32 have awesome detection rates, and not just for in the wild malware.

Symantec takes advantage of people who have bought PCs from tacky shops (pcworld etc). REAL ‘home’ users. They buy dual core pcs and every symantec product on it and it runs like a spectrum, and people have no idea what it is supposed to run like. SAD :(

People have always had this ‘MY AV is better than yours’ argument, its funny how brand loyalty has swung so far away from symantec, bring back the old norton utils
