When punk was living, when it died, and why.
- a brief introduction in the history of punk from my point of view

0. terminology.
this is about punk music, not about the cultural movement

1 the beginning - oi!oi!
it all began in the late 70s, with bands like the sex pistols and the ramones. they incorporated the attitude of the punk movement into their lyrics and musical style. they also used a lot of 'oi-oi!s'. their fans were mainly involved in the cultural movement.

2 the second wave - melodic (or 'skate') punk
with punk bands improving their musical skills they started using more different notes and chords within their songs and also had second voice with the vocals a lot of the times, mostly for chorus. lyrics went away from focus on no future, anarchy or sex and violence, towards more protest orientated songs covering topics like the environment, the future, politics, war. that made punk music more interesting for those not involved in the punk cultural movement like skateboarders or snowboarders. so bands like bad religion, nofx, pennywise, etc appeared. also the bandmembers were mostely no 'real punks' with funny hair and all that.

3 the beginning of the end
in the 90s when bad religion, being the worlds most famous punk bands at that time, changed one of their guitarplayers, bleeched his hair, wrote an extraordinary crap song 'punk rock song' and were played every hour on mtv, punk music got it's first stroke. a part of its heart was dead from now on. by that time also pennywise and nofx started going in the wrong / no direction. either too soft or the same old thing again and again. but there was also a positive movement to be observed, new bands that tried to evolve the music. some played harder, some played faster, some implemented styles from other genres and some did all of that. to name a few: refused, propagandhi, i spy, jugheads revenge, good riddance, 88 fingers louie. when refused were aired on mtv they split up. they were cool.

4 fashion punks and the death of punk music
between mid- and end-90s punk music got very popular and could be considered as mainstream. kids started wearing 'punk clothes' which were essentially skateboarding clothes, and listened to bad religion, the offspring, millencollin etc, because someone on tv told them to do so, and because the others were also doing it. beforementioned bands also fuled the fire by releasing material targeted specifically at mainstream audience. most of the heart of punk music was dead by now, and thats where avril lavigne appears on stage to kill that last living part. scratched it to death with her pink fingernails. stepped on it with stilettos. sealed its vessels with bubblegum. and her skaterboyfriends cheered. mike muir of suicidal tendencies sings "I hate bubble gum punk - They got the look but the music is junk" (title: pop songs).

5. sum 41 and conclusion

fashion punks playing bubble gum punk. little stinking kids. probably homosexual. collaborators in the killing of punk music. boygroup. conclusion: punk is dead. fukc you!
