Suffocation – The Best of Suffocation [2008]

It’s a relatively quiet day here at rlslog, so I decided to keep the site busy as always with another music post. This time a “Best of” from US Death Metal band Suffocation. Personally I’m not a huge fan of “best of” compilations, but they can be very useful for someone who wants to start listening to a band which has released a lot of albums. The discographies of some bands out there can be rather intimidating and its often very hard to know where to begin.

Suffocation fused the predominant rhythmic styles of early death metal, with complex song structures to start a new subgenre of music, considered brutal death metal by some. Suffocation is placed amongst peers Immolation, Incantation, and Morpheus (Descends) as being part of a genetic fragment of death metal known as “New York Death Metal”, or “NYDM” for short. The band is also known for having two African American musicians (drummer Mike Smith and guitarist Terrance Hobbs) which is rare in the underground metal scene.

why if you dont like it are you bothering reading the post and wasting your time commenting on it just goes to show you have nothing better in your life to do than flame the hard work the loggers on this site do to bring us news and release information

on a lighter note great work ReeGed good to see some decent music being released instead of having to take chance on p2p networks

Hey guys… if you don’t like it just look past it and go to the next post. Like ReeGed said, it’s a slow day today and it’s nice to have something to read at least. Granted I love metal and have been eagerly reading ReeGed’s new posts.
If you look back 2 months or so before ReeGed came along RLSLOG was inundated with pop/trance/rnb music and no-one complained then that there was too much.
So now that it is our time for our kind of music just be quiet, wait for your artists to stop injecting heroin into their eyeballs and make a new album for you to leech.

Having never heard Underground New York Death Metal, I decided to give this a chance. But whether I love it or hate it, I am still very appreciative of the fact that someone took the time to post it at all. I have to agree with the later comments, if you don’t like it, just move on to something else that you do like. Thanks ReeGed and thanks to everyone else to posts here. I think you are ALL great. But this is all just MHO. :-)

I think its a shame that you choose to post only these metal music type releases as everyone has different taste, but I must take the liberty to say that the people who do not enjoy this type of music truly consider it noise or pollution of the airways… Everyone is entitled to their own taste and opinion…but it would be nice to see some diversity…perhaps try to find some staff that enjoy something other than noise pollution… ;)

well, to the ppl who like metal and rock, more power to ya, im with ya on that. but to the ppl who like rap/pop/country or whatever else, yall have very few good songs now a dayz. down here in the south, we have more metal and rock stations than we do everything else. and do u know how tired i get of hearing cuss words in every rap song? cant black ppl rap without cussin? thats my opinion.

    January 30th, 2008 | 02:01

There have been a lot of metal posts here recently…and it really isnt what this site should be about…be careful so you dont change the theme of the site from scene news to heavy metal lovers…thats all…you cant really cover all music releases anyways…so id go off it if i were you…stick to the main categories…its easy to say just skip to the next release…but u find several in a row…which is offputting…

If you go to the music section ull see mostly music by, to the common man, completely unknown musicians or heavy metal…try to even it out…thats all im saying…cause for people that dont enjoy heavy metal…it really is just noise…changing the theme of the site to metal lovers is not the right move for RLSLOG the site which I am a big fan of…please dont ruin it…perhaps…make your own heavy metal section if there seems to be a democratic demand for it

You’re missing the point.. have there BEEN any other music releases as of late? A while ago when there weren’t that many metal releases this site was full of other albums because many artists were releasing theirs to maximise Christmas sales, now metal artists are releasing their music jan-mar.

    @33

Lawl!!!!!!!…wtf does that mean, u got three genres in one there. Didnt know heavy metal could get so advanced… LAWL @ nerdy people who know what that means…I hope it was a joke

  35. G
    January 30th, 2008 | 02:24

    @34

That might be so. I must say however, that I hardly belive there havent been any other releases as of late. Its obviuos that theres some rlslog staff that enjoy this kind music and choose to post it, recently a lot of it. I know several albums released within the last two weeks that could deserve a place on here(in my opinion more well deserved than some of the heavy metal stuff).

  36. G
    January 30th, 2008 | 02:28

“i myself, do not listen to one genre. i listen to metal, rock, industrial, gothic… ”

Ok, but I mist proclaim that the categories you subsequently mention all seem to be sub-categories or derivatives of rock(which would be more of a solid genre), so I find your arguement claiming a little off target, because in my opinion there have become WAY too many sub-categoric genres of music. Its as if a person that mostly listened to rap music would say:

i myself, do not listen to one genre. i listen to rap, gangsta rap, hip hop, dirty south, hyphy…

    Do you get my point?

  37. G
    January 30th, 2008 | 02:32

If someone on the other hand said I listen too: house, 70s disco, rnb and soul…Now thats what I mean by diversity…not nitpicking small subcategories which is mostly correct but in general only the people who are into the main genre of the sub-categories u talk about would know what you are referring to…

  38. Sabnock
    January 30th, 2008 | 02:34

yes G, i get your point & well said.

  39. January 30th, 2008 | 02:45

For some reason people who listen to mainstream music seem to have a problem encountering genres they’re not used to. Metalheads are pretty used to dealing with ignorant people though.

    Hip-Hoppers don’t tell me I haven’t posted Hip-Hop though:

i’ve heard death metal because of my metalhead friend who has no sense of any melody i would say. i’m never listening to it again.

wish there were more posts here on rock albums that “truly” rock, not these useless sausagefest. something younger pirates might actually find to be true classics. off the top of my head: led zep I-IV, dark side of the moon, some the cure albums, pixies’ surfer rosa/doolittle, 90s stuff like siamese dream, superunknown, ten, dirt.

You know, everyone on here seems to be of one of two opinions. Either metal is the greatest music on Earth and no other type of music can be half decent, or that metal is garbage.

Personally, metal is okay. Some of it I find to be horrendous, some I find to be spectacular. Either way, I have widely varied musical taste and obviously many other people do as well. There usually haven’t been as many music releases as far as I’ve been on Releaselog, at least not as many as there have been lately. I understand that the Scene has been slow the past few days with hot releases, but metal music videos and metal albums shouldn’t be the only filler.

  52. Final Command
    January 30th, 2008 | 04:42

The demo and the ‘Human Waste’ EP are still my all-time favorite releases from Suffocation, but it’s great to see the band getting recognition.

Lots of great underground metal came from New York… Baphomet was another good one and even Deicide had their start there.

  53. Chunky
    January 30th, 2008 | 04:53

#47 yes indeed, stuff you can get absolutely anywhere and could do for years. I’m a metalhead through and through and these past few posts on the subject have been of absolutely no interest to me(as i use other means), but I am glad someone is using this wonderful ’service’ to post this kind of subject. I am certainly no fan of rap or pop but those posts I ignore. So should others who are no fans of the metal.

and there is a thing called Melodic Death Metal and it’s called that for a reason.

  54. rolz09
    January 30th, 2008 | 05:11

    “melodic” is subjective ain’t it?

you’re right, those albums i’ve mentioned are kinda available through most public trackers. but since this is a popular release site, the stuff that’s gets posted here are sure to influence the viewers one way or another. i’m just saying there should be something else besides these metal stuff. probably a classic rock album every other day or something. lol.

Suffocation of one of the better Death Metal bands! Thanks!

Although I think you should have posted their newest 2006 album because that’s the best and most accessible of them.

Anyone who’s intrigued should atleast give it a try! You can easily widen your tastes and become a metalhead. You just have to find the suitable band for you among so many.

Even I was solely a rap listener at first, but then I discovered bands like Dream Theater, Symphony X, Iron Maiden, Dimmu Borgir, Suffocation…and thought like why haven’t I listened to this before!?

Death Metal is good if you need something a little more technical and fast!

Suffocation was good awhile ago- they are definitely rhythmically charged- I grew past that and now and listen to groups like STRESS, Coaccion, Unsane Crisis (mostly grind/crust) …although they all have roots in bands like these (posted). If you like this, check out bands like: Warfair? and Hemorrhage…esp Hemorrhage, they are considered one of the best death/grind bands of all time. Also, check Decapitated…another giant like Emperor/Behemoth.

And too all the Haterade drinkers out there- I agree with 76- you taste needs refining- death/grind is a genre thats here to stay and has the most talented musicians this side of classical and Hungarian folk. There is TRUE talent involved when you can play riffs that are that complex inside 16ths and keep time/meter. You are ignorant is you don’t at least appreciate that…you dont have to like it, but you cant hate- it makes you look (as you like to say) “G@Y” (obvious jock-rock fanatics on here- go listen to Powerman 5000 you idi0ts)

i’m damn well sick of some of the closed-minded idiots trying to kick up a storm on rlslog recently. yes, that’s all u are and i hope ur proud. i don’t like a lot of the things i see on this site but variety is a brilliant thing and allows for the catering of most people.

Wow. All the negativity.. If you don’t like it why post? I don’t waste my time on Kool Mo G or whatever the hell that last thing was. Keep the metal coming. I listen to every kind of music but appreciate being exposed to bands I may have never heard before like Suffocation. I live in a small town with no radio or bands touring through. I have to drive minimum 5 to 6 hours to see any decent band play live, which I do often. Please post more, some of us actually do appreciate your work here. thanks-

I agree that while variety is good, multiple posts about a genre of music that is…less than mainstream (death metal?? I mean the only people i’ve met who listen to death metal are types that I wouldn’t leave alone around small household animals)…is offputting. Who really listens to this stuff? Is there such a clamoring desire from rlslog viewers for extreme metal music that you make posts about it on your website along with major scene film releases?

@83 You are really ignorant. Most folks I know that listen to death metal have more common sense than most folks. I think the type you are talking about is the ICP/Slipknot variety of “death metal” listeners. They occasionally listen to Slayer, maybe some newer Cannibal Corpse, but they aren’t TRUE METAL. You are confused. Not to worry. Most of the good stuff won’t ever grace your ears, unfortunately. Look at some of the bands myface pages that I mentioned above (Unsane Crisis, Amebix, At The Gates, Hemorrhage, etc) Just check it. Even if you dont like it. You may learn something.
