Stupid Australian pirates busted by police

Police claim they have smashed a $12 million-a-year pirate DVD ring in three raids on houses in Melbourne’s west. The raids busted Australia’s largest pirate DVD syndicate, with 170 DVD burners and more than 400,000 pirated discs allegedly seized, said operations director Neil Gane from the Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft (AFACT). Victorian and federal police and AFACT investigators first searched a home in Sunshine West following reports from the public of suspicious activity, Mr Gane said. More than 250,000 discs and 100 burners were recovered, he said.

A 49-year-old man is assisting police with inquiries. Two houses at St Albans were later searched, where 70 more burners and more than 150,000 discs were allegedly found. The same addresses were raided in November last year, Mr Gane said. The two alleged burner labs, running 170 burners 10 hours per day, seven days per week, could produce more than four million discs a year with a street value of more than $12 million, he said. The haul allegedly included copies of latest release films including American Gangster, I am Legend, and Alvin and the Chipmunks, which are showing in cinemas and have not yet been released on legal DVDs. These idiots misusing the scene for burning and selling the releases make me always sick, they deserve what they asked for.

With what an internet connection costs down here in Oz its almost cheaper to buy a $3 bootleg than to download a movie.

if people wanna download and sell, fair play to em, like any illegal activity, don’t cross the line, and you’ll be fine, the second you get greedy and reckless, you’re f**ked.

I don’t begrudge people who download for profit, hell sometimes it’s easier to just buy a disk then fuss about getting it yourself, perhaps you dunno how, perhaps u don’t have a PC.

the way I see it, as long as noone gets hurt, and you’re not funding terrorism or pushing heroin, i could care less.

but to get caught, oh well… I mean you guys can get on your high horses and shut them down for doing it if you want, but as I say, as long as they don’t cross the line, there no different to you or me.

Did anybody stop to think that some people just don’t download to keep from spending the money, but instead do it in contempt for industry?

Well, I don’t burn for friends anymore, but I still d/l since the industry had the nerve of asking me for my opinion. So as far as I care, the industry gets what they deserve, empty pockets.

    @ Martin

if there is a line between stealing for your own entertainment, and stealing for profit then it is a pretty thin one.

if this kind of thing “makes you sick” you must feel pretty bad about yourself.

ALL OF YOU IS A BUNCH OF LOSERS & HYPOCRITES !!!!

WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU’RE BETTER THAN THOSE GUYS?

They’re just as bad as all of you people, the difference is they’re smarter.

You can throw stones at a thieves if you never steal. But the reason all of you here (including me) is we are all thieves.

Put aside all the reasoning, such as we can’t afford buying originals (well for argument sake you could rent for $2, this you cant afford??? it’s not that we can’t afford, but we all like free stuff don’t we?), we are actually doing more damages to the movie industry than those guys.

Let me fix your loose screw in your brains.

    1. Damage to the movie industry
How many dvds do they sell a year? How many movies do we ALL downloads every year? Im sure our figure will make them look like a grain of sand on the beach. Regardless whether they’re making money and we’re not, WE are still doing MORE damage to the industry.

    2. Making money or personal use?
Let me ask you a simple question. There are 2 thieves, one thief who steals TVs and using it for personal use, and another thief steals TVs to be sold again to make some money. Is the first thief better than the second thief? I don’t know, but I know for sure that the second thief is smarter.

SO ALL OF YOU WHO POSTED ALL THE NEGATIVE COMMENT YOU’RE ACTUALLY A WORSE PERSON THAN THEM. WHY? DO YOU SEE THEM COMPLAINING AT YOU GUYS BECAUSE YOU DOWNLOAD MOVIES? SO WHY ARE WE COMPLAINING ABOUT THEM?

Im so dissapointed with all of you guys.

I thought you were better person than this.

Don’t they have internet downunder or are people still actually buying pirate dvd’s like they were living in a poor country?

I can understand why they do it in africa and so, but Australia?

  12. john
    January 25th, 2008 | 01:01

As a matter of fact ‘hey’ (@ post 111), Australian broadband is quite a poor service at the moment. Quite expensive for very little bandwith. Many people still purchase DVDs, as broadband/cable connections are not as accesible/affordable as other countries. This is something the newly installed Government has promised will be a thing of the past, it will happen, just depends on when. Australia is a long way behind the world when it comes to affordable high-speed Internet. This isn’t because, as you may think, we are sinking as low as a ‘third world country’ but more so a combination of specific businesses monoploizing the industry and inadequate Government assistance.

Okay so from a pure moral standpoint these people are a bit worse than the scene but really how do you justify what the scene does, which is basically taking what someone else put money and effort into with the purpose of selling and then distrubate for free (yes studios wanna make money this is how capitalism works and theres nothing bad in it).

I personally download night and day but my concience can actually live with that and I really wish more could rather than making file sharing into an ideology trying to justify their actions left and right.

Although I agree we’re all pirates and thieves here and therefore there’s no honor amongst us, I think the point that crap like this is bad for all of us is still valid.

I don’t think me and my 5 movies a week is somehow better or worse than the millions of discs these guys crank off and sell in the streets, the difference, is in the ammo this gives to the entertainment industry.

It’s a lot harder for the American government to pressure the other powers of the world to crackdown on pirates when the face of that piracy is a bunch of greasy guys in a garage with piles of scary computer equipment and not the greasy teenager in the prime ministers finished basement.

Maybe it’s not the fact that they were making money that we should be mad about it’s the sloppy operation and the bad press making things harder for the rest of that should be the focus of the anger.

    happy sailing.

Good thing they got busted imo… its annoying seeing all those pirated cds/dvds being sold.

But as for the “harm” we do to movie companies is not that big.

I do download many movies but i still go to the cinema and watch lots of movies. I Wouldnt download a movie if its not good quality and i prefer the big screen. I will also buy dvd movies i like and i have quite a collection of them. Would i ever go to the cinema or buy all the dvds of the movies i download? I guess not. I download most movies beacause i can and not because i want to steal from the companies. Most of them i dont even get to watch them anw.

    @134

“The Scene” can go fu*k itself for all I care. It’s a stupid monikor adopted by a bunch of girlfriendless geeks to make them feel less like criminals and more like.. well some kind of new age Che Guevara stickin’ it to the man activists.

The scene is a clique within a clique within a clique, a bunch of jumped up, self obsessed, pimply teens, desperate for the merest feeling of self importance. They may get spat on at school, laughed at by the opposite sex, they may be socially awkward, unable to hold down well paid jobs due to a lack of people skills, they may be physically disadvataged, sickly, weak, perhaps hideously ugly? Whatever, their skilled computer users and they use their skills and their connections to do the only thing that gives them a place in life.

The fact that the scene is exclusive goes against the very fundementals of what you “champions of freedom” profess the scene is all about.

Answer this, why was AXXO hated by “THE SCENE!!!”?

  42. Thingy
    January 25th, 2008 | 03:50

Its funny to see this posted on here. In one of our newspapers here “The Herald Sun” they run one of these types of stories at least 2-3 times a week! It seems that the AFACT group is shutting down 10,20,30, up to 100 million dollar a year “street value” pirated DVD operations that are “linked to a crime ring” each week. And yet I still see people at the local markets, outdoor swap meets and private sales doing quite well.

AFACT is nothing more then the Aussie branch of the MPAA, complete with false facts, bad images and news stories that are intended to scare people into not buying, downloading or looking at pirated films.

But like it was said before, DVD prices are rising higher here, Movie ticket prices are rising higher here. So its no wonder the pirated film “ring” here is a big market.

But hey, people who get busted are idiots. It’s the little fish that will always swim free of the net.

Of course this is IF all those burners were run 24/7, though I am not sure I think for the price of that set up you could pick up a good used automated duplication system, instead of having to manually load/unload ALL those burners

THIS is where they should be focusing their efforts anyways

  45. four4
    January 25th, 2008 | 04:22

You gotta love the holier than thou attitude everyone seems to share. I say if these cats want to make a few bucks selling movies to others who don’t have the technical know-how or means to download them, so be it. It really has little effect on the scene or even p2p at this point. If all the commercial bootleggers suddenly up and quit, do you really believe the MPAA would say, “Mission: success. Now we can just leave file sharers alone.” Anybody who says these guys got what they deserve are potential snitches in my book.

Is venturislife (Nr. 100) an MPAA/RIAA employee? He has no idea what he’s talking about. The movie industry is not ‘losing’ money at all unless you mean the fact that they posted less profit last year compared to the year before. Oh no what a loss!!!!!! Now I’m going to have a nervous breakdown because a few billionaires made a few billion less last year.

Anyway we know who runs Australia: MPAA/RIAA and the FBI and who said Australia wasn’t an extention of the US? I would like to congratulate Australia on a job well done, whine your constitution is invalid because it was imposed on you by a foreign power and therefor don’t have to pay your parking fines. Please solve this problem by renaming your country United States of Australia, no more confusion which is good for all.

Now all these guys have to do is claim the constitution is invalid and therefor can’t go to prison due to false and wrong laws. LOL @ Australia.

Does the ‘invalid constitution’ argument also work for rapists and murderers?

gents: gotta love the attitude on this thread, and it’s time we all admit to being thieving scumbags too.

sure, the industry puts out crap and we should really get a refund after having to watch/play/listen to some of the crap they sell so well.

sure, we should all get better demos and more realistic trailers that don’t promise but never deliver.

sure, they can cut down the packaging and save me some space and the environment too.

sure, the real artists would still play/write/produce even if the suits didn’t pay them in drugs/cash/ego/fame.

sure, film and music is overpriced (just look at where the profits go) so they only have themselves to blame.

and sure, it’s not the best use of a good brain to go copy someone else’s hard work and sell it for your own gain. so yep, those dupers are stupid.

but they are thieves just the same as you lot. and me. this site is a dupe centre - it’s not a private scene hub sharing a few newly cracked games. it’s a public, ad-funded website that links to copied content. just because there’s no rlslog carpet on a city street, covered in cut-price dvds, doesn’t mean that this is a charity.

so, stupid they may be. hypocritical you are (and you know who you are). love this site though. love the releases. and guess what. if they started charging $5 bucks for a movie, or $3 for an album, I’d start paying.

in fact, sometimes it’s more convenient to pick up one of those discs and stick it in the old-skool dvd player while my laptop is busy downloading even more crap.

    1. They are tools who are making a profit from the scene.
    2. But what is the difference in buying a burnt DVD from guys like this and downloading a DVD from P2P.

Apart from the fact somebody is making a profit its the same thing you are still getting hold of a product that is not intended for the market at that time or for that price and the producer/owner isn’t making a cent.

Don’t get me wrong however.. I am a massive fan of the scene and what it brings to us all.

    Sunshine? Yep, that’s all Vietnamese.

I seriously hate pirates who sell crap quality products. I only download if a movie has not been released, or is banned. If it’s available for rent, or it’s out in cinemas, I’d rather pay to see it - unless it’s something like NORBIT.
And only DVDRips. CAMS suck hard.

I know a lot of people who sell bad quality DVD, and I know a lot who buy them. They must be blind because they don’t see a diff between a CAM and a Real DVD.

    @85 fourth,

“im a media student thats just finished writing an essay about dvd piracy, i tried to include all majour cases and now this happens the day after i handed it in. wank.”

If your essay is anything like your message above, you’re going to flunk. :)

As to commercial piracy: I’m in the US and I have a friend who used to buy pirated DVDs on an almost weekly basis. He would go to a flea market every Sunday and there would always be 2-3 sellers with boxes of bootleg DVDs. Each was in a slim-line case with a badly printed insert, some discs had artwork, some didn’t. Most were crappy cam copies. Back in 2005, he paid $13 for a bootleg of the movie Serenity. Besides the obvious lack of quality associated with cams, there was the back of someone’s head sticking up about 1/3 of the way up the screen and the idiot who filmed it couldn’t keep his hand off the focus control. Every 30-45 seconds, the image would go out of focus, then back in, back out, back in, etc. Besides the flea market, bootlegs were also available behind the counter in a little asian convenience store and there was a guy who used to come into local area bars selling them. To be fair, he did buy the official Serenity DVD when it came out, as did I.

My friend stopped buying them mostly because he ran into unrelated money troubles. For the last year, I’ve been downloading various movies and making him copies. Making playable DVDs takes too long, so I usually just record them to video tape. He’s completely clueless about computers, so he couldn’t download his own movies even if he wanted to. Not only does he not know anything about computers, he has no desire to learn. He just wants new movies to watch and can’t afford to buy them anymore.

Martin, rlslog makes money from the scene.
Your comment about these ‘pirates’ is hypocritical.

With an Alexa rank that hovers around 2000 rlslog is making good money from scene releases. And that ad money is mostly coming from scumbag companies, at least these guys got their cash from providing people with a product for a reasonable price.

Axxo was hated because he took new scene releases and made them available to EVERYONE. They did not just get passed around private ftp servers so a group of sad teens (the scene) could earn brownie points with each other.

Also, I am not from America lol.

  77. hfghdfg
    January 25th, 2008 | 13:49

aXXo isn’t hated in the scene, he’s barely even known. Most scene groups don’t care if a p2p group (or individual) reencodes their stuff. It makes no difference. It’s not like aXXo leaks their releases, or compromises security in any way.

    @169 incog,

A 90 minute movie takes 90 minutes to record to video tape. Converting the AVI to DVD format takes at least 2 hours for me, more if I want the best quality and set the software on 2-pass with all the optimizing options turned on. That’s using one of those 1-click conversion programs, most of which, the authors were too stupid to include an option to fit the output in a 4.5GB blank. So then I need an extra step to compress the 7-9GB output to 4.5, which adds at least another 40 minutes to the conversion process. And that’s if the program doesn’t choke on the AVI file, which seems to happen about 50% of the time.

Or I could use a bunch of different programs to do the conversion the way the “experts” do it; One program to convert from AVI to Mpeg2, another program to convert and mux the audio, another program to turn the Mpeg2 files into a Video_TS folder, etc. Of course that wouldn’t be any faster either.

However, I’m sure I’m missing the obvious. Please enlighten me as to what program will convert every AVI without fail and will output a Video_TS folder ready to burn to disc in less time than it takes to watch the movie on a 1.8Ghz system?

    @186 incog,

I did screw up and forget to mention one thing in my last message; I’m still using Windows 98SE. ConvertXtoDVD only works on 2K/XP. Yes, I know that my system is now considered as outdated as stone tablets and quill pens, but it’s what I have. I also probably should have said that converting from AVI to DVD takes too long “for me”. That’s what I thought I wrote, but looking at my first message, I see that I didn’t. I’ve tried every 98 compatible program I could find and either they take forever, choke on a lot of files, or create 7-9GB files that need to be re-compressed (because DL blanks are still too expensive).

As for videotaping stuff; All I had to do to record the computer’s output was to use the S-Video to Composite cable that came with my video card. My friend supplies the tapes since I’m taping stuff for him, so it doesn’t cost me anything. Sure, the quality isn’t very good, but he’s getting free movies, so he really can’t complain. Then again he prefers fullscreen to widescreen, hates subtitled films and has happily watched screeners with huge copyright messages plastered right across the center of the screen, so it’s not like his tastes are all that refined. :)

Frankly, I’d prefer it if he’d just learn to use a computer (he has a reasonably recent one that he recently inherited) then I could just burn the files to a blank, no coversion necessary. I’ve also tried to get him to get a player that supports Divx, but he’s having trouble paying his bills and doesn’t want to spend the money on one.
