Study: Europe has faster broadband than USA
Eight European countries have broadband penetration higher than 22 percent, putting them ahead of the U.S., according to the European Commission’s 13th Progress Report on the Single Telecoms Market. Denmark tops the list with 35.6 percent of households having access to broadband services. In Finland, the Netherlands and Sweden it exceeds 30 percent. The U.K., Belgium, France and Luxembourg are also ahead of the U.S., according to the Commission. Bulgaria has the lowest broadband penetration of the E.U. member states, with 7.6 percent. 19 million broadband lines were added during last year, landing overall penetration at 20 percent.

But fixed-line broadband isn’t the only communications service that grew during last year. Mobile penetration grew to 112 percent, compared to 103 percent in 2006. At the same time 3G mobile penetration doubled and mobile data services grew 40 percent. The EU plays an important role, and can take some of the credit for continued growth, according to Viviane Reding, the EU’s Telecoms Commissioner. But she also says her work isn’t done. Incumbent carriers can expect to be put under more pressure. “Competition is limited for access to the fixed network which is still provided to 86.5% of customers over the incumbent’s infrastructure,” said Reding, in a statement.

A lot of penetration going on these days
what!? Belgium? Yes, we have 1 provider who gives fast internet through TV cable, but we have a broadband limit of 35 gig(and that’s already expensive).
But another provider is laying out it’s vdsl2+, which will give us 50/100 mbit speeds^^.
Atm normal adsl, 420kb/s, but quite unlimited download;)
USA & Europe fighting for the 2nd place. South Korea rules.
damn straight… korea rules! although i cant wait til my contract is up!
I’m in the Netherlands using my 100mbit optical-fiber connection ^_^.
I am living in the Dominican Republic and I have a crapy conection speed about 42kb/sec.
I have to pay 60 dolars a month for this conection. Go figure that.
I love swedens 100mbit fiber
UK probably has the worst speeds in Europe
Wow! I didn’t know Belgium was ahead of U.S.
Woohoo Belgium!
2mb downspeed here from Ireland…does the job !
My college: 100mbit fiber.
At home (village): 3mbit adsl, unlimited.
I am not complaining
@ 2
ADSL downunder is only good for around 150kb/sec
ADSL2 pushing around 2meg/sec tho!!
Owned
I love my country! Sweden.
I live in Czech Rep. – 10Mbps @ 714czk = $40 a month (no dl/ul limit)
I’ve got a 5 mbit – megabits (about ~ 600 kB – kilobytes) here in Romania.No traffic restriction.For 10 EUR/month.
@ Frank
@ Maarten
@ anon
Belgium rules !!!
Portugal – Cable
25Mbps DL (20,5 maximum in Giganews, 17 average)
1Mbps UL
The highest mobile penetration in Europe 13,6%
USA is crippled when comes to technology, its one step behind Europe and Japan and always will be.
Unfortunately in some aspects it dictates the progress in technology…
The term “broadband” is used to describe what ? which speed qualify as “broadband” , and which don’t ? a more realistic look upon the issues would be this stats :
http://speedtest.net/global.php .It seems Bulgaria is ahead UK, US and others
thats why Europe>America with internet speed
in sweden its by far the cheapest gig line
Don’t forget that , on a continent sized state, as US , is hard to build an infrastructure , from fiber lines , to PoP’s, Internet exchanges, data centers ,maintenance. etc.The total cost of this is overwhelming, and the ISP are , either you like it or not, supposed to make profit and recover their investition.By contrast, in Japan, where housing and people are at a very dense percent, it’s easier to build and maintain a high speed network.
But what do the different services in different countries cost?
In Greece I have a 24Mbps down/1Mbps up line for 29,9 euros
UK is really, really $hit compared with the rest of europe, -especially scandanavia
OK that article said nothing about who has the fastest broadband…it only said more people in Europe have broadband…
Another stupid copy’n'paste post that has a) wrong information in it and b) has a content that does not relate to the headline.
The headline talks about “faster broadband” and the content about “penetration”. Two totally different things.
And the data is wrong because Belgium is not at the top regarding penetration. Swiss e.g. has a higher rate.
@24
UK costs around £18-£20 for 2mb (cable)connection (which is about forty dollars a month -dont know what that is in euros )
slovenia – 10MB/10MB OPTIC – 17 EUR month (no download limits) – can’t get better
according to http://speedtest.net/global.php
North America has the highest download speeds followed by Europe
Yep the UK broadband is crap, when are BT going to pull their fingers out and roll out fiber optic cables!?
Verizon FIOS is $64/m for 15Mb down 15Mb up
Oh yeah baby, Denmark ftw!
Woohow go Belgium :p
but Sweden still own’s Europe
Long live the Royal Kingdom of the Netherlands!
for stupid, this is na article on what percentage of the population has broadband not how fast it is.
at home my connection is 10 MB cable and at schcol 100MB. Fiber optic both unlimited usage!
and guess what?, this is pretty average for the USA.
and guess what else, I can go to any resturant or just wander downtown and get wireless internet for absoulutly free!
and i live in kind of a backwoods rural community or Village as you Euro’s would say!
in the USA you can get Fiber optic to your home if you are willing to pay the extra for it, its just so much cheaper to get the 10MB bundeled with digital television that, that is what most people do here.
oh yeah, if I want I don’t even need a pc I can just go to a public library and use one for free, with 100MB broadband connection, but this is limited to one hour at a time, and with the govt. keeping track of what I look up!
“Don’t forget that , on a continent sized state,” exactly its cheaper to run fiber lines and equipment when your entire country is 30,528 square kilometers as compared to 9,826,630 square kilometers big difference
@27
THANK YOU! I was ready to post the same. Percentage of people who have broadband doesn’t say anything about the speed.
Also, even if the US broadband is “slower”…I’d rather live in the US than anywhere else
oh I myself, wouldn’t mind living in Europe instead of the USA LOL
Especially in the south of France, in say Cannes.
Sweden has very nice connection 2, for privat people that wants internet at home u can have from 56kb to 1000mb i have 30mb and its so damn fast a friend of mine has 100mb
Italy sucks!!!!!!!!!!! Here is the crappiest internet connection you will see in the hole world!!! I bet that even the poorer country in this world has a better connection!! I pay 30 EUR for DSL 8 Mb and i download with an average of 1Mb/s
and upload 50Kb/s(This sucks!!!!!). Here the better upload speed for a DSL is max 130kb/sec. I’m so sick of this!!!!
@27 CIVITATIS NOVI EBORACI
“OK that article said nothing about who has the fastest broadband…it only said more people in Europe have broadband…”
LOL-read the top bit again, mr bush. cos your talking crap as usual
Sweden and Denmark have much faster speeds than US an thats the truth of it, cowboy
@29 Gates
“UK costs around £18-£20 for 2mb (cable)connection (which is about forty dollars a month -dont know what that is in euros )”
Well you are using the wrong provider then mate
@8: UK probably is the worst country in Europe
@44
Seeing as theres only one cable provider in the UK mate, can you recommend a cheaper one?
Why would anyone give a rat’s behind? Seriously, A European commission says “We’re better!” and, what? Who exactly is supposed to care… And why?
Oh, and… Yeah, Belgium and the US are so similar in size and population, comparing them makes perfect sense. I mean, it’s not like one would expect small and densely populated countries to be relatively quick, cheap, and easy to wire up, or anything like that.
Uk right now = 24mb max on Bethere internet. Virgin media is doing 50mb at the end of this year though, I’m currently on VM’s 20mb.
we here at malaysia only have 1 broadband provider. and it’s own by goverment here. max speed is 1mbs/sec but always slow.
Take that USA !!!!
This is only the first step in the masterplan that will make the EU the next superpower. U.S in on decline but the EU is on the rise !!! We will triumph my European brothers !!!!
Long live to the EU !!!
“With VPN your ISP never know how much you download hehe”
That was the most stupid thing I’ve read today.
in Poland internet is sUX!
well, here in germany ADSL is max. 16MB down and 1 up, VDSL is available with… I think it was 50MB and 70MB downstream but only in the biggest cities around; usually you pay about 30-50 Euros for a 6 or 16MB ADSL connection including internet flat, telephone and phone flat …
I’m in the UK and i’m on 20Mbit fiber obtic through Virgin Media….no download restrictions except between 4pm-9pm where they limit you if you download more than 3GB if you do they drop your connection speed to 5Mbit for 12 hours…apart from that its excellent….
20mb ADSL2 here in the uk
I’m from Austria…300kb/s Downstream 30kb/s Upstream – That Suckz!
Belgium may be faster but we got download limits , I can download at 1,2 MB/sec but Once I’ve hit 12GB a month this is reduced to 6 kb/sec
that sucks
Slovakia has connection which speed is: 70mb/s down and 8mb/s up..
i know that,cause i have it…
the name of connection is: Orange fibernet…
To everyone in the UK who live in a cable area switch to Virgin because they are about to be upgraded to 50Mbit connections in the summer….
I have 8/1 mbit unlimited adsl, 39.90 €/month.
24/3 would be 49.90 €/month, but I’m not even close to maxing out the 8mbit so no need for that.
(yeah well you may pwn us at broadband, but we pwn you Euro n00bs at everything else. you are all lazy ignorant unwashed fools married to ugly b1tches with hairy poontangs
)
This can write only american idiot…
Venezuela, 200Kb/s Download 50kb/s Upload that really sucks…!!!!!!!!!!!!
because there’s too many rednecks in the US that’s why ! lulz
“erm with my VPN I can dl 6 petabytes and my ISP never knows a things, cos my VPN masks everything as general traffic”
Ok you just topped yourself. Hilarious.
US Soldi3r your IQ is very funny
LOL @ 65…. Yes u r a Knob Jockey
in the UK it is £18 a month for 24mbit adsl, or £20 for 20mbit (soon to be 50mbit) cable.
I dunno how some of you are paying £20 for 2mbit cable.
thats €23-€25 or $35-$39.
Both are unlimited (although cable is speed limited to 5mbit at peak hours).
10Mb(30kB up
) UK connection 50GB download limit per month, but Ive never gone too far over before.
new zealand last lol
I am from Greece. 20Mbit down/1Mbit up. ADSL2+.
Rapidshare speed: 2.1mb/sec
@Mel C
Its not £20 for 20mb Cable fool. Its on virgin media and its £37 a month. Read the VM site, it might be £20 for the first month or something.
Iz brodband better dan mai 56k v.90 modem?
We here hev better indernet, Zulu cantrie!
here in India I am using
2Mbps 2.5GB limit nightunlimited from 2.00 AM to 8.00AM
Rs.700 ~ 17 US dollar per month
2 mbps unlimited costs Rs 15000 ~ 375 US dollar per month
(this is the best available here)
so u guys should thank god for ur high speed connection and stop whining
Slovakia: I`ve got only 1.5Mbit/256Kbit ADSL, but using only private secure FTPs provides me with HD movies in 6 – 7 hours of download
The fastest avaliable connection possible in only larger cities is Orange Fibernet 70Mbit.
10mb/10mb @ the cost of 30 euro/m, Italy
@61 why not use upc web&phone unlimited large with 16mbit? or do you only have Adsl?
And always remember, kids: the faster you download, the bigger you p-niz is.
@55
you can mask as much as you’re pleased but it won’t hide the traffic…. if you dial in every bit will be recorded… vpn or not, traffic is traffic
I’m from Greece…
I Have 24mbit Download(unlimited)
and 1mbit Upload
It’s pretty good!
I forgot to say that it costs 40 Euros/month
it’s about 62 dollars…
An i also have free nationalo and international(at 24 countries) calls, included in the price.
live in Turkey – 4Mbps @ 1Mbps = $60 a month (no dl/ul limit)
netherlands here. 4mbit, €19 or smthing (tiscali > worst provider imo). it sux cause i want faster upload :p (only about 80 KB/s)
but its not bad here
In Gibraltar I have 1mbit/256k for £59 ($108)a month so you are all doing better. only good thing is it is unlimited and I always get full speed as we all have dedicated lines straight to the exchange.
@CIVITATIS NOVI EBORACI
Those stats are crap too.
They are simply based on reported speeds, in my country they list a tiny hole suburb as having the highest speeds, yet living well outside that teeny suburb, I know as a fact that my speeds are nearly double; Thus the stats just don’t hold water and can’t be used as a benchmark.
Hehe, penetration…
Europe sucks anyways…If you think you can pass by the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, we’ll just nuke you.
Yea thats right you might have a faster internet…WE GOT THE BOMBS. hah belgium and sweden. hah uk and france. you guys are jokes. We invented the internet. Actually Al Gore invented the internet…along with manbearpig.
How many nukes do you have? WE GOT enough nukes to blow the planet up bigillion times over. Take that you pinko commies.
PS. who lives in Turkey? im in the mood for turkey sandwich. hehe im hungry.
20mbit/1mbit for 30 € in germany….thats enough
crappy comedian.. come here turkey and eat me : )
I’m on 50Tbps no limits for 55cents/month. I live on the north pole.
US be n00bs…
@37 you have no clue wtf you are talking about so just STFU.
Here in Macedonia I pay about 45$ for 2048/256 connection with 101 gigs limit… And the standard is low, we have only 2 internet providers, so you go figure.
this only proves that americans are inferior to europeans
Broadband Speed by Country Oct. 2007
http://www.websiteoptimization.com/bw/0711/
My speed :
Last Result:
Download Speed: 13580 kbps (1697.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1887 kbps (235.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
I pay $40.00 a month not bad. For surfing doesnt really matter, depends on the website server if it can handle the overload. the only time i ever seen 1mb download for any p2p program was utorrent and the file a linux iso (ubuntu). go figure….lol.
To Test your speed here :
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
They are comparing countries the size of California or smaller to the entire US.
There is broadband in every town and city here, but there is still a lot of US that is quite rural.
Go BELGIUM go!! xD
Although I have Belgacom ADSL Go:
only 12 gig a month… normally!
Since my dad’s work pays it, I buy a few volume packs a month without anyone noticing!
I would switch to Dommel as soon as we need to pay the internet ourselves!
Some cheap connection you guys have..
I pay 45$ / month for 2MB Wimax, F1nland. But I like it after years with crappy gprs..
1000/100 next month, not sure what i should do with it though, might settle for 100/100 if i find it not filling any purpose.
I have 24/1 now, very stable and always maxes out but still… 1 up is weak.
I have 24/8 mbits, from this crappy cable provider ComHem in Sweden. Costs around 40 EUR. Way too pricey IMHO but at least I get the speeds that are promised ^^
We even have better quality TV than the US…
Well, i live in Denmark and i guess the penetration is all good etc. but the speeds aren’t, sweden wins that one.
it’ll be another year or maybe two before larger city’s get optical, untill then i’ll live with 20/2 mbit for 54.83€ a month, the good thing tho, we don’t have centension ratio’s, oh well it’ll be 1:1 then, limit’s or any of that crappy sort, so that’s 20/2mbit 24/7/365, i can live with that.
oh, and they’ll pump it up to 50 mbit down this summer.
“Europe has faster broadband than USA”
Cant stop laughing.. Is this news for the americans?
What part of that article said anything about speed? How does the percentage of people with broadband equal faster broadband?
Actual article:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,143591-page,1/article.html
Way to change the headline rlslog.
europe has faster broadband than usa ,i live in europe i have sh.t limited 3mb broadband wtf ;0
Ireland Leads all Countries in Broadband Growth
yeah right good for a laugh 3mb wtf €50 wtf
http://www.websiteoptimization.com/bw/0711/
You guys complain a lot.
In Serbia broadband is expensive and rare.
I pay 20 euros for a lame 512Kb upload and 64Kb download.
sloooooooooooooooooooooooow.
Only because we have one big national company which has monopoly over internet access. And that company couldn’t care less for its customers.
i live in sweden, i got 24 mbit, and the fastest to get in sweden is 30gbits in dreamhack, and 3g internet is 100 mbit. So i mean in some places you can be in the “forest” with 100mbit
This is old news, everybody already knew this.
meixco 1.5mbs down 125kbs up. $33
Why are we compering a continent and a country you f00ls?
I’m from Romania and I’d say that most of cities in Romania have decent internet services. I’m from a small town (about 50,000 inhabitants) and am enjoying a great service (provided by UPC) 20mbit/2mbit.
To everyone competing to see who has the worst internet service:sorry folks,Canada beats you all, hands down the worst ISP’s in the world.3Mb connection if you’re lucky.
yea right, another reason why America sucks
20/0.1 mbits (upload is maxed, download usually around half of it), with a limit of 35gb(up+down)/month, costing 61 EUR/month.
telenet @ belgium, sucks…
Actually 90% over swedens pop can get breadband via ADSL so thats quite nice, or maybe it was 95 i dunno, my self, i got fiber
Who cares? Japan will still own both the USA and Europe in anything internet related.
Really, who cares how fast your neighbour’s internet access is, as long as yours is fast enough and with FUP.
mupet0000 you really are a muppet.
http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/bb_deal_size_xl.html
£10 a month for the first 3 months, then £20 a month after that for the 20mbit tariff. (obviously the phone rental costs will be on top of that, but the total is still only £31. Just the same as ADSL2+ is £18 plus £12 line rental a month).
Don’t be such a tool in future.
it’s not the size of your connection that matters,
it’s knowing how to use it
My cousins just got broadband a year ago where they live in Scotland.
I’d much rather in the USA, where even a podunk little town in Iowa has had broadband for nearly a decade, than the venerable homeland of Alexander Graham Bell.
Its a generation of HD VIDEO…Someday youtube will allow people to upload HD VID so what will people do with download limits…HD VID is enormous in size. There is always a UNLIMITED way but LIMITED is for Business and it makes the business man greedy…
Barack the magic negro lives in DC.
Europe rocks! specially The Netherlands
.
Anyway i wouldnt want to live in the US, we are richer and have better internet
http://speedtest.net/global.php aint got nothing right.. Damn thats a siht service
major penetration, huh.
Republicans have crippled the US in our advancements in Technology especially in our so called “Broadband” meaning until recently 200kb/s, now the NEW standard is 768kb/s gimme a break. READ Obama’s views on technology we need a DEMOCRAT in office. Instead of spending an extra 100 bucks on gas in every household why doesn’t our GOVerment spend it on a broader scope of cables running underground in our major cities Faster internet means the Economy will boom. Instant satisfaction Like good Manga. I mean lets face it unless Obama gets the Vote were stuck at a speed which cripples our Lives. I’m Just Sayin. VOTE in November.
uhmmm. out of curiosity… does japan or korea haz faster internet? i remember reading about some post that japan launched some crazy fast internet satellite recently??
We just switched from cable broadband to VDSL (AT&T's U-Verse) here in the U.S. @ 10 Mb/s down, 2 Mb/s up. Both the cable and VDSL have identical advertised speeds, but the VDSL connection speed seems to remain steady while the cable speed varied greatly depending on neighborhood usage.
Been looking at Speedtest.net. How are countries like Denmark and Sweden getting such outrageously fast speeds? Are you using fiber optic lines directly to the home? We have that here, but even then they aren't usually offered in such fast speeds.
