FDM is short for Free Download Manager. It is exactly what the name implies. It doesnt do all these added (useless IMO) features that this one does such as downloading FLV files…It does, however, increase your download speed by downloading the same file in several different pieces, maxing out the host’s upload limit per piece. That, in turn, allows a faster download (that is, if your download speed cap isnt reached first) than the host normally allows.

That method is used by all (as far as I know) download managers in existence right now. Its just that FDM does it the most efficiently, IMO.

I like how all these download managers claim to let you download any FLV video, but yet none of them support the RTMP protocol used for streaming-only Flash videos.

If you don’t miss it, it will probably be of no use to you.

It will not help you if you can already download what you try to download. I.e. the app can NOT suck more data through your line than your line’s capacity allows – you usually don’t need to jump through hoops to get max. dl speed.

On the other side: apps like this one can be helpful: I for example use an older version (v4.4) of Metaproducts Offline Explorer to dl realmedia videos (lectures) off various sites that are actually supposed to be streaming-only. Since the videos are transferred via the RTSP (the real-time streaming protocol) instead of HTTP or FTP, I can’t just right-click them in Firefox or Opera to dl.

Mentioning Firefox it comes to mind that there might be a free firefox widget/extension (or how do you call them?) for downloading via RTSP.

Plus there are other free stand-alone tools comparable to the featured one.

FDM why is there not much download manager that works for mozilla .. their all for exploer .. even FDM . not sure bout this 1

I have a standard ADSL with 2500kbps download and 400kbps upload speed.

Will this program help me in any way? Or is it more suitable for people with dial-up connections?
