Stage6 ends, no more free videos

It’s already quite an old news but the sad information about end of any filesharing site should be posted here. DivX has announced that at the end of this month they will discontinue operations of the Stage6.com video sharing site. They have already stopped user uploads and you can view sites through the end of the month. The compete traffic chart is below showing just under one million uniques in January 2008. DivX will focus on video sharing on third-party sites. With the traffic levels the site is showing and the 30,000 videos on the site, couldn’t they find a buyer? Seems a bit off to just close the service with such strong traffic levels.

The company did say that they worked on a exit plan since mid-2007. Our core business is to work with a wide variety of partners to give consumers a high-quality digital video experience on any device or platform, said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, Inc. By no longer expending resources on Stage6, we sharpen our focus on creating a global standard for digital video while building a business that maximizes shareholder value. We will provide more information related the Stage6.com shutdown on our fourth quarter earnings call, scheduled for March 11, 2008.” I wouldn’t personally think the reasons for closure were only work- and resource-related: it might be also an enormous pressure from antipiracy organizations which didn’t like the full movies and TV shows being uploaded to Stage6.

    @2

Stage6 was the Core Streaming site.

All the Alternatives stream from Stage 6

The only site left that i know of is Ninjavideo.net
Don’t know how long that site will last though… let’s hope for the best.

The funny thing is, once one idea ends, a new one begins.

So give it a few months, there will most likely be a new alternative to Stage 6, or on the other hand, Someone will buy them out.

The Wise One: thanks for you wise comment. if you haven’t noticed, we are just group of folks sitting in their homes and doing all this stuff for the community which emerged around this site. we are nowhere near professional online media, we do it just for fun and our visitors. noone can really sit 24/7 in front of his computer and scan all news servers. besides, there would be always some idiot moaning about old news, no matter how fast we bring it. if you don’t like it, leave us please, there are 200 000 other people every day which seem to enjoy the site.

Aww, I liked having decent quality streaming video - youtube is simply unwatchable for me. Guess all the copyright claims finally killed them.

And a note to The Wise One (3) - this isn’t slashdot, if you don’t like how quickly the news stories are posted, buzz off to one of the many other sites available on the internets.

Stage 6 was a site I stumbled across only 2 months ago. It was the best site I found for streaming anime.

If any 1 can tell me of another site I could now use to stream anime that would be amazing?

Google have mentioned that higher quality videos for youtube is something that’s on the cards for the near future.

Vimeo already has their HD channel up and running.

However, too many unnecessary videos of asians and anime…it ruined the site. gg

Martin, you should refrain from lacing third party information with your own thoughts and then signing off the source at the end. That’s unprofessional. Your own thoughts and comments, which I’m sure we are all interested to hear, should come AFTER the quote from your source.

Wow, horrible news. I loved Stage6. It was the highest-quality video host out there, you could even upload 1080p content with no loss in quality whatsoever. Even though it probably won’t go anywhere, you guys should sign the petition to keep it alive. Just in case.

The coolest part about Stage6 was the fact that they allowed downloads by default, as opposed to sites like YouTube, which make you use an external plugin or app to grab videos.

Also cool was the fact that the downloaded videos were simple .avis, and therefore very easy to convert to other formats.

Posted an article about stage 6 closing at:
    http://averad-blog.com/news/stage6-to-shut-down-on-february-28

People are moving movies from Stage 6 as fast as they can to other services like Veoh. Companies hosting their videos on Stage6 are being helped to migrate their videos to other pages, DivX says.

Quicksilverscreens has some good forum posts about stage6 closing as well as comments from users who heavily relied on stage6.

    Direct Quote from Joox:

    Important news
Today I became aware that http://www.stage6.com is closing down in 3 days. I will continue to run Joox and use those 3 days to add support to other video hosts and direct links to divx movies. This means that there will be a transitional period where not many videos will be available, but I hope that with your countined support it will work out for the best.

You can download the original file formats from veoh again,

So no more flv’s. Just download the avi’s, only problem is you have to use the veoh tv software. And its slower than stage6

    Its a quick fix anyways.

Use quicksilverscreen.com to find the latest videos
