You're all a bunch of prats if you think MS is doing anything for any of you. They're in it for the money. There is no real market for Linux and Mac users bought a Mac for specific reasons. PC owners and the General Public are stuck with whatever crap microsoft dishes out. So here's a though, wake up and start demanding better service and a better product because this monopoly of M$ofts of actually in a counter-productive state of mediocrity. Vista or XP? If you're system can perform well enough to support Vista good for you, but don't piss on other people who can't use Vista yet or perhaps don't want to use Vista yet. After all, we're talking about software that is still in it's Beta stages and will continue to be until microsoft decides to make an all new OS in which case they'll actually finish upgrading Vista to a semi-stable version and then abandon it for their new lucrative OS which will not only provide better graphics and multimedia performance enhancements, but it will also perform oral sex on you.

You're all ridiculous if you think the big "M" gives steaming pile of crap about any of you. Profits and margins, and profit margins are all they give flying flu-flu bird about.

XP is just starting to work properly and now they M$oft expects people to waste even more money on a new system (hardware & software) and upgrade to their latest OS so that the general public can do mundane things like check their email, show off their privates via webcam over MSN, and upload their latest video to YouTube of Beethovens 5th redone in armpit farts to the key of C-splatter.

If you're reading this and have never had a problem with Windows then you're one of those poofters who bought a computer just so you could watch the screensaver and because it added a certain decorum to the rest of your living area.

Anyone else who has put up with the -years- of bugs, bologne, and bull-feces understands exactly what I'm talking about.

Personally I think we should get more for our money but some ding-dongs don't seem to give a damn or don't mind settling for an unfinished product. Would you buy a painting that is only half finished? Pay full price for a large pizza only to find that half of it's been eaten? Buy a pair of shoes only to find out that you'll receive the second shoe once you've worn in the first one?

You wanna go out and buy Vista, a piece of software that can be described as Craptacular at best (a title that was reserved for XP but they recently moved it up to almost-work-worthy), that's great. But if you wanna hoot and holler about it and promote it for microsoft as if it were the next coming of Christ then you might as well be giving the VP's and new CEO of M$oft a free handjob.

Keep up the great work M$oft, I'll be dead before you create a fully functional OS but at least you have a world full of beta testers at your whim and beckon.

Both Linux Mint and Xubuntu use the Linux kernel (same as Windows XP and Windows Vista being the same at their core), and yet, if you were to measure their performance, Xubuntu would come out on top.

The problem with Windows is that many programs, when installing them, unnecessarily add themselves as services. This doesn't happen as much in Linux, and is not a problem with MS, but with software developers.

"I guess Vista will become usable too"
Vista is already usable - this guy needs to open his dictionary.

The fact that XP outperforms Vista is a given --
a) Vista is using the hard drive more than XP - some low I/O operations that are scheduled (like defragging), and then there's Superfetch. Despite that, if you give Vista some time to learn about your habits, Superfetch will begin to *increase* performance.
b) XP is full 2D and renders through DirectDraw. Vista combines 2D and 3D and renders through Direct3D.

You cannot compare these two operating systems: It's like comparing Ubuntu with eyecandy installed (forgot what it's called, but Linux Mint has it preinstalled) to Xubuntu. The latter will perform better.

http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3731088/TinyXP_rev06

I still think TinyXP says it all about the operating system. That you can have it under 1 gigabyte install and run it at that. It also proves that the more Micro$haft adds the bulkier it becomes.

Linux does the whole Live CD thing. Windows Vista DOESN'T do the whole Live CD thing and we will leave it at that. XP all the way. For the time being. Either that or go to Linux and the whole virtual machine deal.

Give Jumi a break! If after a year he isn't happy, he ought to know from having tried 365 days! Geez!

On the other hand all you seem to care about is how fast an empty operating system loads... without loading into memory your applications.

Notice how you need 2GB of ram memory! Heck my old laptop with XP boots up in about 60 seconds using a 1.8Ghz P4 CPU with just 512MB ram memory...

And there are more than 20GB of applications on that Laptop.

Vista is crap and you know it. Telling everyone you got to have a Intel Duo 2 Core with 2GB or ram just to turn on your computer, isn't impressive at all.

On the other hand, Linux rules, as you don't need to spend the bank here to boot up an operating system. And unlike Windows, Linux can boot from CD/DVD/USB/eSATA and Network, without being told it's illegal to do so...

In addition, unlike Vista bloatware, Linux is more efficient and stable, smaller and obviously way cheaper, as it's legal to download it for FREE...

Vista = $$$ ransomware (with DRM limitations and restrictions)

maybe you need to upgrade your pc? new OS=new pc.
I bought vista with dual core and 2gb ddr2, and it takes
about 55 seconds from the moment I press the startup button untill I can start FireFox

I had Vista Ultimate for about a year and when I first loaded it up, I was pretty amazed at the way it looks. But eventually I noticed everything ran slower. I thought it was just me. It got to a point where startup was 5 minutes (yes I timed it) and I only had about 4 cpu intensive programs (Adobe PS CS3, Supreme Commander, Maya, C4D) I would never run any of these programs with other ones. I got sick of the slowness and switched to Windows xp lite and was grateful for its speed.

Pretty much, wait till the service packs come out for vista before you get it. It has a lot of bugs as well.

My brother bought Vista for around 100 euros.
When it came and he showed me it,I thought the changes were cosmetic, nothing very exciting. Most reviews i have seen about Vista have confirmed that.
I felt sorry for him because he has a crap dvd player and i thought he could have bought a new one with the money he spent on Vista instead.

I don't know where these people find their writers but it would be nice if they hired people who actually have something intelligent to say to write articles about technology.

Vista's problem has nothing to do with XP itself and everything to do with the fact that it doesn't offer enough advantages to make the purchase worthwhile.

It's obvious here that Microsoft is paying many Indians in India and anywhere else to blog positive comments for Vista, as the rest of us all know a different reality about Vista.

Lame methods of stating how XP came out everyone experienced the same issues as Vista... Where were you then, as it wasn't like that at all...

Nobody had to buy the best new computer to just use XP like Vista, and certainly nobody had all them DRM restrictions over media content like Vista does...

But, of course these fanboi types want everyone to think otherwise, in that it is really okay to spend the most money on a new computer and for the operating system, that you hope can use your already paid for software investment...

Ah ha.. sure thing...

Stick with XP Pro I say until something really has something better to offer than all "wow" hype.

I have one machine at work running Vista (mainly for testing purpuses) but my home machine still runs XP.

I do agree with some comments here, when XP came out the exact same scepticism occurred but everyone made the switch anyway, as will happen with vista over time.

The only real beef i have with Vista is the interface (which you can disable _almost_ completely, but not quite enough) and older hardware drivers, sure this is the manufacturers problem but this doesent mean it can be shrugged away.

The worst system is XP 64bit version! This is an incomplete OS that Microsoft rushed to release it! It's really not a true 64bit system and Microsoft support for it is almost nonexistent! This system was born dead! LOL! The first true 64bit OS is Vista64 (the most stable system that Microsoft has ever offered to users!)
