This is absolutely the worst movie I’ve seen all year, and perhaps the worst of the past SEVERAL years. It is ridiculously bloated with pretentiousness, and none of that pretentious adds up to anything substantial. It’s basically the movie equivelant of the typical stupid high-school sophomore who thinks they’re really deep and have a lot of deep, radical things to say to people, and that they’re the first person to think of these ideas, but in reality, they’re just full of shallow, retread BS that everyone’s heard, realized is garbage, dismissed, and left behind.

No word is more apt here than “mess.” It’s a mess, plain and simple.

Even if the plot wasn’t ludicrous and stupid, it’s full of some of the least likeable characters I’ve ever had the misfortune of having to spend two-and-a-quarter hours with, with the sole exception of The Rock’s character. It’s films like this that remind me so well of why the one thing that I find more annoying and disgusting that far right-wing extremists, are far left-wing extremists.

And what a pity, to waste such an outstanding cast. Sigh.

A pretentious, bloated, shallow, 2-and-a-quarter long mess, and a total cinematic disaster. That’s what Southland Tales is. Save your time, look for something else.
