Sony’s PSP Go leaks out before E3

Look up there, folks. That’s the future of Sony’s hopes and dreams in the handheld gaming sector. With just hours to go before the company’s official E3 2009 press event, it looks like the pieces are all coming together. First a UMD-less game release, then a highly credible mole giving the PSP Go a name, and now — live action shots. The images here were sourced from an obviously slipped June 2009 Qore video, and aside from giving us a look at the slider-based system (which, let’s be honest, looks a ton like the questionably successful mylo), we’re also told that it’ll tout 16GB of internal memory, built-in Bluetooth and an undisclosed memory slot. If all goes well, it’ll ship this Fall for a price to be determined, and it’s actually not slated to replace the PSP-3000, as both of ‘em will attempt to live on store shelves harmoniously… at least for awhile. Oh, and don’t worry — we’ll be on hand in LA to bring you all the impressions we can muster early next week

Full Qore video (pardon the sync issues). Here’s the dirt:

  • 3.8-inch display (resolution is undisclosed)
  • 43 percent lighter than the PSP-3000
  • 16GB of Flash storage
  • Bluetooth built-in; supports handset tethering and BT headsets
  • No UMD drive
  • Memory Stick Micro slot
  • New Gran Turismo, Little Big Planet and new Metal Gear Solid (!) on the way
  • Full PlayStation Network support (movie and TV rentals / purchases)
  • Integration with PlayStation 3 (works the same as the PSP-3000 does)
  • Sony views each of its products as “10-year lifecycle products,” so the PSP “needs to live on.”

Doesn't look as stylish as past models…or is it just me? It looks cheap, but that could just be the photo.

NO UMD :S Then What ???
and how they will earn if no UMD

No dual analog stick, no buy.
    No OLED screen, no buy!
No Backward Compatibility For UMD, no buy.

I love my current PSP. Although I almost never use it for games, the battery life on it currently kills the Iphone, and Ipod Touch. And as an added bonus, theres an awesome homebrew and hacking community behind it. This will kill all that.

And finally, it looks like a Chinese knockoff of a PSP.
Just to give you an idea of what this should have been, check out this amateur's user render of the PSP 2

    http://www.thatvideogameblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/psp2thoughts-mar10.jpg

If a amateur can design that, why cant you just hire him, Sony?
The only thing i'd buy it for is the 16GB Memory
This will fail, and deservedly so.

I'll stick to my hacked psp where I can play free games on it. I'm sure this new psp is extremely hacked proof. Plus they probably have a huge price on it even though their is no serious difference other then the controls are hidden on it and the screen is supposedly lighter. How much lighter can the screen get I believe I have a psp 2000(those are the slims right?) Well, I can have the lights off and its bright as hell!

  22. SEOGUY
    June 4th, 2009 | 09:05

Its not even about playing pirated games on the psp, most of them arent even worth mentioning. Off the top of my head I can name over 40 DS games that MUST be played, I cant say the same for the PSP. And Gran Turismo was suppose to come out YEARS ago on the psp, talk about slacking off.

Their hardware was not the problem it was lack of 3rd party support. The only good that came out of the 1000-2000 models was that you could install darkalex's m33 firmware. I believe you cant even do that for the 3000 now, so this new version will be much more lame.

I sold my hacked psp over a year ago, it was great for running homebrew/popsloader and trying out different themes. Also playing movies on the PSP was great, but when it came down to strictly playing games I picked up the DS.

Oh yeah! What a question from a STAFF member!
Quote: Dr00n "NO UMD :S Then What ??? and how they will earn if no UMD"

Yeah, iPod, internal storage! and how will they earn money without cd's?

Like a PSP Store! Or in more "futuristic" way, games in a memory stick mate!

oh and by the way SEGA was bought by Microsoft a couple years ago…

why bother with the slide if u wont put QWERTY there? its such a waste of space imo.

and yea, i agree with the one fella who mentioned it, it does look like a cheap chinese knock-off. i've seen those, they look very similar indeed.

    i really expected more design-wise. =

Fools, this isn't really being marketed towards CURRENT psp owners.
It has a blu-tooth and you can sync a ps3 controller to it wirelessly

I'll be getting a PspGo! to play non-pirated psp games on my television in 480p with my six-axis/dulashock3 controller. I have an original Psp but the PspGo! is what ive been waiting for all this time and i didnt even no it.

It has connectivity with PS3 controllers for use, it connects to the tv with component cables, it has internal flash so that saves time on battery burning out from spinning a umd and faster from not having to load from a umd.

$250 is a lot to ask for a portable Ps1 but its pluses are well worth it. Just compare the price to buying a new Psp-3000 and a 16 Gb Pro duo.

    Ill be picking up:
    Monter Hunter portable
    Gran turismo
    Motor Storm PR
    Soul Calibur IV (with kratos)
Final Fantasy Crisis Core AND Dissidia
and many from its older/last years catalog.

    as well as

    Dante's Inferno
    Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
    little big planet
    fat princess

fool! sony did not mention that the psp go will have more battery life.

  33. Alexander
    June 4th, 2009 | 10:01

When PSP merges with mobile phone(Sony Ericsson) it would kick both MS Nintendo and iPhone in the ass, throwing them to the other side of the galaxy, and then I would buy such a device.

This new "PSP" is OK, most of you say that slider is no good, but a lot of you use mobile phones with sliders. Lack of UMD is great, because it expands battery life (no electromotor for both rotation and laser). And yeah it will be hackable, yust a matter of time, and whoever told that is no UMD backward compatible, just download game image from previous PSP, like erm….. it uses same based PS2 CPU, same game coding.

  34. Respect-My-Authority
    June 4th, 2009 | 10:05

    @33

Fool! Only a moron wouldn't understand that it takes more battery to spin a disc and read off of it, then to simply read off a memory card. So, if the battery is at least the same battery from the previous PSP's it WILL last longer while playing games. However, I'm sure they've upgraded the battery to begin with anyway.

  35. FamilyGuy
    June 4th, 2009 | 10:06

    pochi

I NEVER said sony said it would have more battery life.
I, as in ME, said its battery will probably last longer considering it doesn't have to spin a disc. If you ever played a pirated game on a PS1 classic on a psp you'd know that the battery last WAAAAAY longer than when playing from a UMD.

  36. djdat
    June 4th, 2009 | 12:48

I'll bet my ass that it wont run homebrew. The only way it got hacked in the first place was because of the save game glitch in the first batch of GTA liberty city UMD's, And i'm sure sony have learnt from that mistake, Hence why there is no UMD drive. Well that and they just want more money from the PS store.

  37. Ghandi
    June 4th, 2009 | 14:09

@33 they clearly did they said the psp go weighs 50% less then the psp 1000 and since there is no UMD then battery life is also supposed to last up to 50% longer.

@38 if you stayed current on the psp you would know that there was a Gripshift exploit that came out a little while ago Which resulted in Davee creating ChickHEN which is a homebrew enabler and works on ALL PSP's simply by running a TIFF file.

So in short in 5.50 sony removed support for .tiff based exploits….. Thats what they say anyways which is the same thing they said after the last batch of .tiff exploits. and will prolly say the same after the next batch that come out for the GO!

"When asked about the PSP Go's battery life, Koller said that it will almost be the same as the PSP 3000, which is about five to six hours, and that Sony is looking into a battery boost peripheral to support PSP Go. He also confirmed that it uses the same SDK as the regular PSP and hence, there will be no exclusive Go titles."
