Sony removes 80GB version of PS3 from shelves

A memo to Best Buy employees indicates that Sony may be discontinuing the 80GB model of its PlayStation 3, leaving no backwards-compatible versions of the PS3 on store shelves. According to the memo, Best Buy and some other reatilers will stop selling the $499 PS3 on January 28. Sony late last year stopped selling the 60GB version of the PS3, the only other version of the console that was backwards-compatible with PlayStation 2 games. This memo only affects North American gamers, as the UK and Japanese markets have already moved to a single-SKU model (the 40GB PS3).

If Sony removes the 80GB PS3 from store shelves and ceases all production of that model, there will no longer be a new-SKU PS3 that plays PS2 games. The 60GB PS3, long since gone at retail, used hardware to enable PS2 games to play on the PS3. The 80GB version, which is apparently on its way out, used software emulation to enable playback for many, but not all, PS2 games. With both versions gone, the question begs to be asked: is Sony working on yet another version/configuration of the PS3 that will support PS2 playback, or is it leaving consumers high and dry with their PS2 game libraries?

    @ 76 : That list is old and outdated as hell.Not to mention that most games on it aren’t even exclusive to the 360

    Better luck next time

    i’m not a console user, but that sounds logical.

    it’s a good move to get rid of such ridiculously small hard drives. so i’m guessing they sell 300-500GB models instead to keep up with the times? nice.

    @ #83, most PS3’s are from China too. though some are still Japan-made. I like the Made In Japan ones better. They look more solid.

    @99 Blu Ray
    I don’t own a xbox 360 and only played one once so I have really no opinion of it. But It must have been unfinished also cause everyone that I know that owned the 360 had those Red Rings of Death. I own a ps3 though and had to send it back. They gave me a new one that runs fine. I guarantee in the future though they will release a new ps3 that will be upgraded in hardware and hopefully more ram. The playstation 2 slim models have an upgraded cpu from 266 to 300 mghz and some other things. Alot of companies are selling unfinished hardware and software. They all hope their customers make them aware of bugs and other features they might want thus to finish the product. It is not just game consoles its whole lot of products. Any Presonus firepod project users in here! LOL

    I work in the home entertainment industry in .au and i can confirm that a backwards compatible ps3 will be hitting our shelves this year. Not the 60gb, not the 80gb, but…

    @21 Matt…i already own a pc and i really don’t need a console to play games…
    If i started to bye consoles at the time i was getting my first console at this time i would have spend more money than i have with my pc.
    + i can upgrade easily…with 140€ i can get an faster cpu..
    Can ps3 do that?No…so G.F.U.S. and that was my opinion, you don’t have to except it but don’t criticize the criticism because its a thing that will only show that you have a lack of thinking potential..
    As for the “You are a moron” let get an on line I.Q. test and figure out who is smarter.

    Sorry for my English.

    man there are alot of people that argue over nothing. bet most these people dont own both systems like i do. ps3 is good but 360 is better plain and simple. people that say ps3 will rule in a couple of years are morons. do u really think microsoft isnt coming up with something to take out sony in the console war. its microsoft we are talking about. they want to rule the world. the xbox has better online. better games, even the controller is better. the exclusive titles for ps3 are ok but 360 has the better pick off the exclusives. my ps3 is mostly a blu ray player now. i only buy games for it that i find good that dont come on the 360 and thats not many.

    wow, i thought i would never see so many people fighting over a couple of boxes.
    well anyway, i’m actually rather dissapointed with sonys efforts, a few bad moves has set them below the rest, even though the console had the potential to be a great console, and probably still will be (gotta admit, it was a good move taking sides with blu-ray, but who says xbox360 cant do that too? blu-ray isnt owned by sony!)
    i’ve played all 3 ‘next-gen’ consoles and oddly enough, i chose the wii as my fav. i’m not really fussed on flashy graphics so long as the game itsself is good, for example, i like the wii because i can play super mario again! (i was rather upset when my SNES died…) plus its the only console i can manage to play whilst being absolutely tanked! (try playing wii tennis while you’re drunk…hillarious!)
    but not to forget the 360, brilliant console from what i’ve played, even though i’m f**king hopeless at halo, i still enjoy being blown to bits by my mates. its a laugh!
    PS3, like i mentioned before its got the potential to be a good console, all sony needs to do is start making a few smart moves and a couple hundred dollar price drop (AU $800, i dont think so… get down to about the AU $500 mark and i’ll buy till the cows come home!). Another thing sony has above all its other competitors is that its both a console and a grill in one! beleive me, george formans brand has NOTHING on the PS3
    unfortunatly for all three consoles, i’d rather stay with my PC, mainly cos i like to tinker…which doesnt always end up good…. i dont care how good graphics my gaming-ma-jig has, i dont really give a damn, so long as i can still play battle for middle earth and command and conquer generals.

    anyhoo, thats probably the biggest waste of a comment ever put on this site, but at least now i feel like ive had my say. sorry if i sounded like a dip-sh!t or if none of this makes sense.
    (help protest for cheaper games in australia!)

    I got a 60GB and then Dance Revolution for PS2 for my wife. They don’t HAVE one for PS3 yet I do not think. Anyrate, I am glad I’ve backwards compatibility, and Full Metal Jacket in Blu-Ray is AWESOME!!!

    An interview with the UK’s Official PlayStation Magazine reveals that Rockstar’s creative VP Dan Houser believes the 360 is impairing the development of Grand Theft Auto IV. According to the magazine’s online partner, Computer and Videogames, Houser says the lack of a guaranteed hard drive and the smaller storage space of the DVD format is limiting the game’s progress. In contrast, all PS3s have a built-in hard drive and the console’s Blu-Ray format can hold about five times as much content as DVD
