Sony removes 80GB version of PS3 from shelves

A memo to Best Buy employees indicates that Sony may be discontinuing the 80GB model of its PlayStation 3, leaving no backwards-compatible versions of the PS3 on store shelves. According to the memo, Best Buy and some other reatilers will stop selling the $499 PS3 on January 28. Sony late last year stopped selling the 60GB version of the PS3, the only other version of the console that was backwards-compatible with PlayStation 2 games. This memo only affects North American gamers, as the UK and Japanese markets have already moved to a single-SKU model (the 40GB PS3).

If Sony removes the 80GB PS3 from store shelves and ceases all production of that model, there will no longer be a new-SKU PS3 that plays PS2 games. The 60GB PS3, long since gone at retail, used hardware to enable PS2 games to play on the PS3. The 80GB version, which is apparently on its way out, used software emulation to enable playback for many, but not all, PS2 games. With both versions gone, the question begs to be asked: is Sony working on yet another version/configuration of the PS3 that will support PS2 playback, or is it leaving consumers high and dry with their PS2 game libraries?

lol luckily the ps3 in my house is backwards compatible, people say just use your old ps2 but when u plug a ps2 into a 104cm tv its looks too blocky and downright crap. at least with the ps3 it adjusts it all properly so it still looks decent enough.

i saw this happening a mile away it sucks B.C is a great idea but the console makers are stearing clear of it now which sucks! for example say someone has 20 ps2 game and after lashing out on the console and one game they cant afford any more games for a while should they be exiled to the one game while 20 odd ps2 games could be used on the new console?

Hard to think they won’t have a PS3 that’s backwards-compatible. Guess it’s a $ thing… They want to sell more PS2 consoles aswell, and force people to still hold on to their old PS2.

Hmmm, good thing I still have my PS2 with SwapMagic disks. I guess it doesn’t really matter at all that my PS3 isn’t backwards compatible…it couldn’t play my PS2 library anyways…

But, yeah…not a great move on SONY’s part, backwards compatibility should be required in all Next Gen machines…someone at SONY ain’t using their logic board…

Okay so I am a xbox360 fan and I don’t want to start any flame war’s but…The PS3 it a great machine and when they actually figure out how to manipulate that cell processor it will make some revolutionary games…however that is still a few years away..in the meantime multi-platform games just run better on 360 and I can’t see any PS3 exculsive I will be missing out on badly any time soon…So by the time they actually make full use of the machine they should be able to include backwards compatibility again..somthing standerd with a simple download for a good size library of games on 360

I think it should be backwards compatible because it’s just easier for the consumer. Sony really doesn’t seem to be thinking about the consumer lately, and that’s precisely why they are at the bottom of the list when it comes to console sales.

Sony really lost it. They can’t handle the competition from Microsoft and Nintendo, and it shows on how they handle the PS3 release and retail. They used to be innovative and on top of the electronics market, but I haven’t seen them release a decent piece of electronics in months or even years!

Really will backwards compatability be missed that much? Can’t remember playing many PS1 games in my PS2. The only Xbox game I ever played in my Xbox360 was Halo2, that was until Halo3 came out!

  21. Matt
    January 28th, 2008 | 14:25

@13 You are a moron if you think you will save money from building a pc. To build a pc equivalent to that of a ps3 or a 360 will cost a lot more then the system itself. If you only play games it would be a little more cost effective to go the route of buying a system instead of a pc. PC’s also get outdated way to quickly, at least consoles take a couple of years :/

Lots of people say, “Who buys a PS3 to play PS2 games?”. Sure, that may be true - you buy a PS3 console to play the latest gen games - but despite this, the backwards compatibility still holds appeal to consumers. It’s convenient; no need to set up a PS3 AND PS2 if you ever want to replay the classics, and for consumers, an extra piece of hardware for the same price is tempting. It’s a nice bonus. Shame Sony has done away with it. We will be hearing a lot of, “Don’t get a PS3, it can’t even play PS2 games!”

  27. qwertz
    January 28th, 2008 | 14:55

Truth is that Sony wants to kill backwart compatibility. Some exec stated it publicly. They want you to buy new games, not play already sold games on subsidized hardware. What the consumer wants is of secondary concern to them.

I agree, why would you buy a next gen consol only to play old games.

    @ 13
you can add another OS on the PS3, like YDL so you have a very powerfull PC OS on your PS3.

I have both xbox and PS3 and “blu-ray” is the way forward so MS can GTF

sony are crap, they should just give up on consumer products and just do r&d for other companies…the ps3 could have been a solid technical achievement and a good consumer product but sony have messed up everything surrounding the technology. to me that’s a company that has no business in the consumer market. it’s really a shame that they spend so much time and money doing something, and then completely screw it up. sad.

That’d be the American market, who cares about the American figues?

I for one is more interested in the Japanese market since the game i would buy would come from there.

I’ll have admit though, i’m a bit jealous about Fable 2 being Xbox 360 exclusive, i just hope it’ll grace the PC sooner or later as i’ll never ever buy a 360.

But that one title dosn’t stand a chance over the upcoming PS3 exclusive games.

Besides, i guess i could play it at a friends’ place if i can convince them to buy it.

Dont know why you guys have to fight, some bought the ps3 because they want to play games like resistance and kind of stuff, and some buy´d a 360 to play the other great games

on my side, i got a 360 and im happy with it, but i also think the ps3 will get some awesome games in the near future

    whats the deal?

to stay on topic, the ps2 emulation is importend, bc the orig. ps2 played on a HDTV just looks crappy

what exactly are these upcoming PS3 exclusive games? someone enlighten me cause i keep reading how PS3 is gonna top the 360 this year in terms of games.

  41. killwhitey
    January 28th, 2008 | 16:13

first off, i like my original xbox because i dont play games, i use it as an entire media center, saving games to the hard drive, along with movies, music, pictures… everything. i dont need a high priced machine that i will most likely never use for what its developed to do. now, unless someone can find away to hack the ps3, and make it into something that would actually be useful to ppls needs, then i wont be buying one. Xbox & X-360 is the way to go, and screw sony! i know plenty of ppl who work for the sony company in Dothan, Alabama, and they all said some interesting things about whats been going on. so, i myself, expect or assume, for the “play-station trademark”, to disappear within the next few years. i mean come on, no console trademark lives on forever. if sony really wants to blow ppl away, then they need to create the ultimate bad ass gaming system with all the neat little tweaks and tools that ppl want now-a-dayz. i mean, it just kills me how ppl whine about “my system is better than yours! no way man, mines got the best graphics, ERRRR!”. hell, the movie companies even have better graphics for animated kid films, that are better than any gaming system. i mean hell, look at beowulf, the movie was a tad bit better on the big screen, but on a tv, it sucks. y? u tell me. sony has went down hill, microsoft made the xbox into a super computer like gaming system, nintendo wii is new state of the art technology, but in my mind isnt as important as when the original nintendo came out. sega, you saw where that went.

those, in my mind, are the gaming consoles i talk about, none of the others matter, because they SUCK!

    January 28th, 2008 | 16:22

If there were ever a console that needed to be backwards compatible it would be the PS3. Releases come out so slowly for it, until there are tonnes of games out there, people want to play their old favorites as well without going through the trouble of switching all the hookups.

If Sony doesn’t have further plans then they are totally disregarding their consumers however I would guess there is more news coming eventually.

I remember sony touting hardware backward compatibility as a big plus against the 360 software based emulation.

The cell is powerful cpu, but i rather have a ps3 with a less potent cpu and a geforce 8 class rsx gpu since more than 70% of the graphics job is done by the gpu not the cell cpu.

I have a PS3 80 GB model and just use it to watch Blu-ray movies… that is until metal gear solid 4 comes out. That game alone justifies the PS3 purchase for me =)

  49. Play-Connect
    January 28th, 2008 | 17:21

they’re halting the 80GB coz they’ll release a new SKU with bigger HDD. Sony dropped PS3’s BC in order to cut costs. Sooner or later they would “re-apply” BC thru software emulation, activated by a software update. Good thing I have a 60GB PS3 with EE. :)

  50. Guan
    January 28th, 2008 | 17:22

I’m not a big game fan but I’m thinking of buying a PS3 just as a home entertainment system. The Blueray, 1080p upsacling for my 47″ FullHD plasma, storage, networking and wireless capabilities, and the growing number of codecs make this the only console for me. Though I’m sure they’ll include backwards compatibility through emulation, it’s not a major issue.

  51. y3gzi
    January 28th, 2008 | 17:27

I honestly do not think that Sony will decide to go completely without backwards compatibility, since the Wii and Xbox360 have backwards compatibility as well.

    January 28th, 2008 | 17:32

in europe, the ps2 compatibility has been stripped for like,.. 6 months.

  53. Johney666
    January 28th, 2008 | 17:37

The suckas @ Sony are really confident now. Future of BluRay looks good. Cheaper PS3 sales are up. So now they want to lock all the new console buyers to PS3 platform only and keep them from migrating to to anywhere else - even their previous success story the beloved PS2.

OMG!! That means they are planning to kill the cute little PS2 soon! They are gonna pull out all the plugs of teh life support system 1 by 1. :(

  54. FamilyGuy
    January 28th, 2008 | 18:02

    WOW!

I didn’t realize there were soooo many ill informed readers on release log. It astounding that so many completely wrong or idiotic comments were made thus far.

In relation to not having B.C.: BUY YOUR FRIGGIN PS3 NOW! While the 80Gb model IS still on the shelf, this is what you slackers get for waiting. And it’s $500 for the 80Gb model, NOT $600.

In relation to the PS2 not looking good on your HD sets. Get the Progressive scan enabling component cables. You can find them for under ten bucks online. MY HD set looked great especially playing games like Black and Gran Turismo A-Spec.

In relation to the PS3s upcoming library of great games and exclusives:
LittleBigPlanet, Gran Turismo 5, Devil May Cry 4, God of War 3, Metal Gear Online, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, White Knight, Haze, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Killzone 2, Final Fantasy 13, Final Fantasy 13 Versus, Warhawk, Unreal Tournament 3 (mods allowed),
    Resistance 2 (60 player online, 8 player co-op), MotorStorm 2, Naruto, Star Ocean 4, Wipeout HD.\
    Happy?

The 360 has been out a year longer and was released against NO (get that? 0) competition, was a lower price and the PS3 was able to sell just as well it’s first year with bad fame (you guys), and high price tag.

Saying “a pc would be a better choice and could do a ton more”. Im pretty sure we’re talking about people who want to play games. The PS3 can play music, movies, games, browse the internet, is a blu-ray player, has a built-in wireless card, rechargeable wireless controllers, accepts any blue-tooth headset, accepts any 2.5″HDD, accepts all kinds of multimedia cards for transferring data, can have a linux OS installed to it, and looks sleek and gorgeous compared to the look of most pc towers.

Don’t worry folks, i’ll return to spead more knowledge if needed.

  55. FamilyGuy
    January 28th, 2008 | 18:09

@53, they aren’t killing the PS2, heck! they’re still releasing new slim PS2 color models for sell. They just want PS3 owners to buy PS3 games. Probably extremely envious of the attach rate of 360 games and figure the B.C. is partly at fault for theirs not being higher.

    a) agreed. PS3 is great, XBox360 is good, but #1 is the pants, and #2 is my (imaginary) sister’s skirt.
    b) So… is it not possible to download and burn PS2 games and play them on the original 60Gb/80Gb PS3’s? Everyone saying ‘just plug in your PS2′… what if you don’t have one but could download 200+ PS2 games? Would you need to chip the PS3, or just say f’ it and buy a uber-powerful PC with emulator? Also… Gamestop has ooooodles of PS2 games just waiting to be rented/bought by PS3 owners… so the backwards compatibility is a gem to me. If they scrub it from all models, I won’t be buying a PS3. simple as that.

There will be a bigger capacity PS3 released this year. It will be a 160GB model. I remember reading all of these comments when they announced the end of the 60GB model in the UK. Now that it’s actually happened and only the 40GB version is on sale, I don’t hear people complaining about it. Will it have BC? I don’t know, but it will have full Live TV capabilities (along with the 20/40/60/80GB models), and that’s something that the 360 CANNOT DO. Not even the 360 Elite has the hardware capable for Live IPTV which I thought was hilarious.

    @FamilyGuy

Devil May Cry 4 isn’t a PS3 exclusive. It was but it’s not anymore. You also forgot Wipeout PS3 (different to Wipeout HD).

It was also announced today that Woolworths will stop selling HD DVD movies in store from March 28th 2008 however it will continue to sell them online for the time being. The reason they have done this is because Blu-ray outsold HD DVD 10:1. http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=32490

Now, will you all join me by clapping your hands and stomping your feet as we sing to this well known song:

The wii has more games? I didn’t realize shovelware counted :/

Countless games are being/have been made for the wii to capitalize off of it’s extremely fast growing install base. Developers that are just trying to make a quick buck are making crap game after crap game. There are actually VERY few good games on the wii, even less that will hold your attention for over a month. Not to mention that the wii is still so close to “last-gen” that games can be made for it quickly.

“The 360 has more games.” And it should, it’s been out a full year longer.

Thank you Family Guy for saying relevant things! Ugh, I seriously wish that the whole “PS3 has no games” debate was over. The PS3 has over 100 games geniuses. Yeah, not as many Xbox 360 but look at the games it has in it’s library. “Viva Pinata”?? WTF is that?? And boo hoo, the PS3 is overpriced. The PS3 was NEVER overpriced. All game systems are sold at a loss. It (used to) cost about $800 to build the $600 60GB model. So they made -$200 profit per console. They didn’t go the cheap route like Microsoft and put out a faulty product that would make them pay millions out later for an unreliable system. Seriously, my roommate got the RRoD over break. All of the editors over as Gizmodo have all gotten it. I’d rather pay money for a system I know won’t break down then having to call and replace it ever 2 months.

well, i think mainly the reasons why xboxs are so called “unreliable), is because ppl try to mod them and fail, the dvd drive gets dust in there and cant read a disc, ppl dopping them, so and and so forth. its mainly the majority of ppl who own the consoles, being the reason for the mishaps. however, some consoles, come retailed being defective. but when one does, then u have to call the company. thats why i try not to get something “electronic”, when it first comes out, unless i really want it. because, all electronics have defects, they all have bugs, they have things that need to be sorted out. same with windows vista… you catch my drift?

there are good products and bad products out there. i’ll admit, ps3 is a great system, but ppl have their own opinions, and in this kind of debate, where ppl are constantly arguing over which one has better graphics, or which one has the better games, ect. there are always going to be somebody who disagrees and who happen to like what they like. if i had the money, i would probably but a ps3, but i probably wouldnt play it lol.

    @74

    You can’t be more wrong.

The 360 is not reliable because the hardware is cheap and they are overheating , plain and simple. You don’t get a 33% failure rate only because users try to mod the console or whatever.

Come on dude! Call of Duty 2? You’re damn right that list is old. It also came out on PC first but never mind. In fact, it came out before the PS3 was released. Wait, it was available on PC before the 360 was released in November 2005. I can’t stop laughing at this list hahahahahaha.

Soooo, it was too difficult to find a non-ancient list? Lets see a 2008 list for 360 exclusives THAT MATTER. And i mean actual exclusives, not games that are coming to the pc too.

The ps3 is a beast weather or not it has back comp or not,if u want to still play out dated games in 480i thendont buy a 720p min system point blank and im not sure 360 plays all xbox games the reason 360 is doing well 1. everybody wanted to have it when halo 3 was to come out. 2. it was the next newest system. 3 $50 a year to play on line is a great price :)

Throughout this thread I believe that no other post is as informative as FamilyGuy’s at 54. Bravo.

Really, those who are ranting about how much more games the XBox 360 has over the PS3, get it through to your brains that it was released a full year before the PS3, therefore giving it time to build a a stable library. Wait and see what the PS3 can do with that same time period, then complain. If you can, that is. Titles like MGS4, Gran Turismo 5 and God of War 3 alone justify my 3 week old 80GB PS3 and there are still more games to come.

I love my PS3, I stream movies and music from my PC to it, Blu-Ray movies look great on my 42″ HDTV, getting online with it is easy (and free), currently playing Uncharted, Heavenly Sword and reliving the old PS1 days with FFVII and Legend of Legaia.

As for the XBox 360’s RRoD and other malfunctions? It COULD be a mistake in trying to mod it. It COULD be a result of mis-use and carelessness. But then again it could be that it’s just a faulty piece of technology considering 2 of my cousins (who know nothing of console modding and have given their 360’s nothing but unconditional love) are now mad as hell with their consoles under the influence of the RRoD.

The mighty $$ speaks. Why support PS2 games (for which original hardware is long gone) when you can squeeze a few more bucks out of the market by forcing gamers to go to PS3 games by making your hardware non-back compatable. Ethical-No. Necessary (due to cost of back support) -No. Profitable - OH YES!!. The risk is pissing off your PS2 users who may choose a different maker for the upgrade you have just made necessary.

I’m sure MS doesn’t like having to support all the old versions of Word etc but imagine the chaos if they stopped - so many businesses (incl govt) can’t handle “.docx” documents. Perhaps Sony should think about customer loyalty - it works both ways.

    Backward compatible gaming…
To tell the truth.. the 1st few months of the X360’s life, I spent more time on my Xbox than anything else.. After they updated the backward compatible list of games for the 360, I wiened myself from the Xbox to my 360.. But I actually had better games at thast time to play on the 360, than an old xbox title.. Same thing with PS3… It is a new system, and ment for new games.. Being able to play the old, is nice, but after you have the feature, most will not even use it… As far as exclusives.. I have both the X360 and PS3.. The x360 is by far the better of theo 2 systems, when it comes to online play.. But for all areound goodness. I’d have to tip my hat to the PS3. Mainly due to the larger ghard drive area, and I’m able to place tons of my divx movies on it and watch them on my 32″lcd..

    @89

Yeah! M$ still supporting everything it has ever created. Just like M$ still support old OS’s Like Windows 3.1/95/98/NT4/Me/2000. No wait…

Here we go, old versions of office. Just like M$ still supports Office XP/98. No wait they don’t support those either. Damn. I got it!

Just like M$ supports old hardware in it’s new OS. Damn… I just can’t seem to make my point.

Maybe M$ (and Sony) think that people need to embrace new technology rather than clinging onto the old in order to take a step forward. M$ already did it with Windows XP. XP was designed and released to work with the most recently available technology. XP didn’t work with lots of hardware which was designed and released with in the hayday of Windows 98SE. People complained so many companies released their own drivers so that old hardware would work with this new OS. Eventually people stopped complaining until M$ did it once again with Vista, forgetting/ignoring that many people have gone through this 5 years ago.

Anyone choosing to buy a 360 over a PS3 SIMPLY because it doesn’t have BC should ask themselves why bother buying a PS3 in the first place when they can get a PS2 for a lot less money and how will buying a 360 allow them to play their PS2 games?

Like I said in an earlier post, people in the UK aren’t crying because they can only buy a 40GB model. Many do their sums and work out that the PS3 is better value for money than a 360 and can do many things that a 360 cannot like Live IPTV or play Blu-ray movies out of the box. Some people decide that they want to buy a system with a large games library and choose the 360 as it came out in 2005 and should (and does) have a much wider choice of games than the PS3.

Personally, I like my 250GB PS3 with BC (which I don’t use as my chipped PS2 sits next to my PS3 and I have many import games) that I can stream media to using WinAmp Remote. All I need now is an official UK launch date for the Dual Shock 3 and HAZE.

    @87

Unfortunately God of War 3 has been delayed until 2009.

  94. SL33P3R
    January 29th, 2008 | 02:39

The Playstation 3 is an unfinished system period. That is why you have to update it to get features they promised a long time ago before the system was even out. This is exactly why Sony has to keep making new systems to fix the last ones.

    January 29th, 2008 | 02:41

Here’s to you sony for another f**king terrible decision!!! i somehow figured that sony would start screwing their customers as soon as the format war was over…

    January 29th, 2008 | 02:42

Man, such a big fuss. Isn’t backwards compatibility one of those things you kind of want but never really bother with anyway? Just get it cheaper in time for MGS4 when I’ll finally have to get one.

    January 29th, 2008 | 02:45

Are Sony planning on any sort of Betamax-compatibility with any version of the PS3, or should i just eBay this videotapes now?

buy a ps2 for 99.00 soon [right now 129.00]. if ya want to bkcomp pay for it

  99. Blu Ray is King
    January 29th, 2008 | 02:55

@94 : LOL…….i’d rather have an “unfinished” console with firmware updates (and a Blu Ray drive) once in a while then one who has about 33 % (if not more) of suffering the infamous RROD or another hardware failure.
And , are you saying that the 360 doesn’t have any updates ?? Sorry dude but your argument in flawed in invalid because it’s just not true.Proof :

    http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/news/2006/0605-springrelease-features.htm
So according to your logic the 360 is an unfinished system as well.

Finally , you say that Sony make new systems to fix the last ones but that’s wrong. The reason why they make new systems is because it’s better from a business stand point and not because they have to fix them , unlike the 360 who had to launch and “elite” version with better cooling because the core and premium ones kept failing due to overheating and poor hardware.

360 fanboys are simply hilarious sometimes.

  100. Alexander
    January 29th, 2008 | 02:58

And after a year, you will be supprised with the OS ver. for PS3, that will have perfect software emu for it.
    Marketing maybe?
And mostly to do, that are nextgen systems on the way, and they don’t have time to make PS2 games……..maybe some ports……..well……….buy PS2? for 50$ :D
