Sony plans to sell 150M PlayStation 3 consoles

At present, Sony PlayStation 3 is the worst selling latest-generation video game console. However, Kazuo Hirai, chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., hopes that the latest system will eventually outsell its predecessor, Sony PlayStation 2 with 150 million units sold worldwide. “It’s not fun for me replicating the PS2 numbers. I’ve seen that movie already. I want to try to see if we can exceed the PS2 numbers after nine years, otherwise why are we in this business?” said Mr. Hirai in an interview with Financial Times. The original Sony PlayStation that was launched in 1994 was sold in 102 million units quantity worldwide, whereas the PlayStation 2, which was released in 2000, passed the 140 million units mark recently. The market of video games is increasing dramatically, particularly in the U.S., these days, hence, setting an unprecedented goal for the PlayStation 3 is not something strange.

But there is one thing that should be kept in mind when comparing PS2 and PS3: the former dominated the previous round of console war for the market and neither Microsoft Xbox  or Nintendo GameCube could rival it. Nowadays Nintendo Wii has outsold both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, moreover, the latter is still ahead of its Japanese rival in terms of installed base. Game developers already recognize Wii as the winner of the current round and predict that both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 will trail Nintendo’s latest video game system. Mr. Hirai did not reveal any strategies or initiatives that would help PlayStation 3, which is sold for $399 in the USA, to outsell Microsoft Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii substantially in the coming years. Still, he indicated that he would work hard in order to PS3 to surpass sales of the PS2 over a similar time period.

at this point, as things stand, they should start to think about giving the console at near zero profit. this way they would regain the lost share.

i bought the ps3 when it dropped for 899chf (yep thats like 800$) here in switzerland and didnt look back ever since..best console/multimedia system for that price hands down..price might be a bit much for other countries but a standalone blu ray player costs even more afaik

Ps3 is by far the best console. But until they make the price more affordable for people it will continue to lag behind the competition.

Yep, piracy always helped to sell more consoles. PS2 is still selling because is too easy to get games from torrent sites.

    Xbox360 and NDS idem.

People who can afford games will always buy them and people who pirate are usually who would never be able to paid for the games, still they increase the console base in huge numbers.

The ps3 gpu chip is based on old geforce 6/7 technology DON’T EVER FORGET THAT, it’ll never have better graphics than the 360. It’s cell cpu architecture is great for h.264 encoding and folding at home and all those things but it’s inadequate for tasks such as games.

  19. tester
    July 22nd, 2008 | 17:17

Microsh*t will never release BluRay drives on 360.
they already made it clear 360 can survive without BD, and focusing on streaming.

HD-DVD died a slow and painful death because of the fact 360’s came with DVD-DL instead of HD-DVD which sold as add-on.

BD is the future, whether you love or hate sick sony, buying PS3 provides cost effective option for both watching movies and playing games based on knife, bow-arrow,etc

What have you been smoking? Games on 360 and PS3 look the same. And why shouldn’t they? They use GPUs that have the same performance.

Jesus, I bet you think the PS3 uses the processor to render graphics too…

what are you talking about tansendant the PS3 is far more powerful than the xbox 360 but unfortunately the xbox had a head start. the xbox needs a blue ray drive to give it the edge or it will eventually lose out…….sony just needs to get the price right to shift loads of ps3 plus a load of good online games.

Yeah @ 26 – “5 games”: Bioshock, Tekken, Wipeout, Gran Turismo, Motorstorm, Killzone, Resistance, Uncharted, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, LittleBigPlanet, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Unreal, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Socom, Burnout. I can play any one of those games, yeah – that amounts to “Five”. Duh, just because you’re on the soupline and can only afford faulty trash.

360 is over the hill, PS3 is young. Yet the 360 leads by a tiny gap. PS3 will dominate as 120,000,000 PS2 users upgrade.

The only reason 360 nerds don’t complain about their 4-hour DVD9 games is because they have to turn the 360 off every 45 minutes because the fire department were getting sick of scraping it off the floor.

As it stands, in America even with the new 60GB 360 coming out, for $50 more you can get a PS3 with an 80GB HDD and all of the extras included in the price such as WiFi, Bluetooth, Blu-ray, it’s a DivX Certified product as well as easy upgrading of the HDD, currently to 320GB.

The only things the 360 has over the PS3 at the moment is it’s large games catalogue and it’s possible to play copied games on it.

    @19 Pooboy

Yes the PS3’s RSX is between a 256MB 7800GTX and 7900GTX but what do you think the 360 has? The ATI Xenos is almost an X1800 seeing that it’s based on the R500 chipset and the X1800 is an R520. If you’re a PC gamer then I don’t need to tell you which was better out of the 7800 and X1800 (and why ATI promptly released the X1900).

Multiplatform games will tend to look the same as developers don’t want to fuel the console war, but they will add things which each console can take advantage of (e.g. the PS3 can handle more objects on screen).

You will only start to see real differences (for the time being) in 1st party games.

What the **** is wrong with you people? These are electronics companies you are fighting for, not the Third Reich or the Soviet union.

I have a PC that is superior to any console, but I also bought a cheap 360 so that I could play some console exclusives. The PS3 was just not worth it, since it costs as much as a good computer nowadays, and since I don’t need a Blu-Ray player (I don’t buy movies, I download them, and use the computer as a video player)

If you want a Blu-Ray and MGS4, buy a PS3. If you want Gears of War 2 and don’t want to pay an outrageous sum for a console, buy a 360. Stop bltching for **** sake.

All these consoles are just “boxes”, the peripherals (Wii-Mote) that are currently driving the market are just that, peripherals. Sony and Microsoft will follow suit, then it becomes about software, aesthetics & experience. Sony have built a “box” which they know will last the full distance this generation. Nintendo are surviving on releases of first party software every 6 months, so it’ll be interesting to see if Wii-Music takes off, if not, they better have another ace up their sleeve, otherwise that gives Sony and Microsoft time to play catch-up…

  37. garylow
    July 22nd, 2008 | 20:38

the only reason why Xbox 360 and Nintendo WII are selling better than PS3 coz thay can be modified to play Pirated DVD Games, and middle class ppl still find PS3 games expensive

give it a year or possibly few months from now, you’ll see pirated games for PS3 or cracked Dowloadable full game for free
Im sure we’ll wake up one day PS3 will wipe WII and Xbox’s ass….

  38. memememememe
    July 22nd, 2008 | 20:53

Thats partly true, Sony is actually selling the PS3 at a faster rate than the PS2 – the hardcore gamers have adopted it with a good attach rate and Sony are trying to squeeze it further by sticking to a price point.

It’s basically down to Wii strangling the casual gaming market – those who buy a few core games and buy them legitamately. I can see that tailing off if they don’t have any killer 3rd party apps in the future.

Sonys problem is stock! I work at Currys (The UK’s Largest Electrical Retailer) and we have had no stock for months and months! Im forever turning people down! We get more Wii’s then PS3’s!

If you got the money, go ahead and buy a PS3. I could buy one if I wanted, but the only game that interested me was Final Fantasy XIII. Now that it’s coming for the 360, I don’t have a reason to buy a PS3. I will cheer for the 360 because it’s the “american product” of the trio. Many of you should understand that! This is why it doesn’t sell much in Japan.

For ME $350 would be the point at which I wold be taking a SERIOUS hard look at it, mainly for the Blu-ray player.

The only problem with that is to get the best out of it you need to spend about $50-$75 on an IR ad on, that enables you to have full access (including remote eject)

Backwards I would like but not a killer, BACKUPS on the other hand… really need to get those to work easily.

    I think blue-ray screwed the ps3

Even if you can hackit still blue ray´s are justo too expensive to burn games, not to mention download 25 g per game.

  50. pee pants
    July 23rd, 2008 | 03:51

How the hell did blu ray screw Sony? Tomorrows games will only be able to be made on a media with the capacity that blu ray has. Metal Gear Solid simply is not possible to make for the 360 given its media.

Sony and CO. have a strategy with blu ray. By the beginning of next year, blu ray will be just as affordable as SD DVD. Eventually though, the plan is to have blu ray movies price out at around $10. Writable blu ray discs will be less than any current format, with up to 5x the storage.

Honestly, at $399 it is a great deal. It is one of the few things I feel is truly worth it. And if you take the time to hunt a deal down, you can get it the price down below $350, like I did.

“At present, Sony PlayStation 3 is the worst selling latest-generation video game console.”

Year to date, Sony is number two behind the family friendly Wii. The PS3 is less than two years old, the XBOX has more than a year of sales advantage.

  51. bam

ps3 over 360 any day of the week, like the man says its about graphics and thats what the ps3 gots. ps3 is so much faster processing and smoother then the 360.

geez thought rlslog would be full of better informed posters not just leechers.

    Metal gear solid 4 iso = 46gigs

but the game data is only around 30 gigs.

    16 gigs of redundant data.

so easily ported to the 360 with around 4 discs if kojima san had used proper compression techniques to save space.

face it…… if bluray doesn’t take off…. Sony has basically thrown away their lead in the console market. They have already lost ALL the profits made during the PS2 era.

No point buying a PS3 now, Sony dropped all backwards compatibility with current models. I was really thinking about one of the 101cm Bravia & PS3 deals but dumped that idea when I found out none of the consoles I could get with it would play my huge base of PS2 games.

PS2 with HDloader, Up to date PC and upscaling divx player are still all you need.

#51 Time to reality check ,i work doing 3d stuff for advertising and games ,i can tell you that 25 g it´s a lot for 3d and i think most of the things in MSG4 are uncompressed.

The succeeds of a console rest in piracy and thats a fact

Sony do a couple of bad things in ps3,the video card bandwidth its one, that way the same game in both systems then to look blured in ps3.

Today blue ray cost a lot more than a dvd and i think it will take a little more than a wile to drop.

call me strange, but i’m getting a little annoyed with people coming on comments blog and complaining about people being competitive. Its a competitve envirnoment just like sports… everyone has their favorite and backs it up, which helps keep things diverse and interesting. now thats out of the way i just want to say that… Sony made a great system, which a lot of people didnt accept very well… people can talk garbage about Sony all they want, but Sony WILL eventual be on top and you want to know why… because you same people who are talking crap were the same people who were on the Sony bandwagon during PS1 and PS2… sooner or later you all WILL get a PS3 and you know it… PS3 sales are proving it… you all hoped on that WII or 360 wagon and maybe a few may continue to be loyal, but most wont because they know Sony is a better product in the long run. They proved themselves not just with PS or PS2 but with every product you buy from them. They are a Brand name thats reliable. unlike microsoft who decide to sell defective system just to get an head start and then dont even have the backbone to admit that you messed up and make a cover story for it. then on top of that you half*** fixing the problems by giving their customers a hard to and leaving them to buy another broken system… and what baffles me more is that the customers allow it… as far as the WII is concern i was going to support them, but they turn there backs on us Hardcore gamers and decide to go the casual gaming unpredictable and unreliable yet powerhouse source which disappoints me, but thats business… all of it is business and from as far as i can see Sony has been loyal to his customers… they still focus on us hardcore games and is trying to compete with competition.

Also i work at an EB games store and all you hear are people whining about how there is a very limited selection of games for the PS3 and asking when 360 exclusives will be released on PS3 (haha). I couldn’t care which console sells me most. I, like most people will buy the best value console for money. Which happens to be the 360. And 360 have still sold more consoles than wii and ps3. The choice is pretty obvious. There is also a way better warranty with xbox. The only downside to them is that they are made by microsoft.
