Sony launches OLED TV sales
Sony Corp. said Monday it will begin selling the world’s first ultra-thin flat-screen television based on organic light-emitting diode technology in December, as the race to develop next-generation televisions heats up. The technology, known as OLED, uses organic chemicals that can emit light. That means the new TV set doesn’t require a backlight like conventional liquid-crystal display televisions. Televisions using this technology can be thinner and show crisper images with less energy. LCD technology will still dominate the television industry for awhile, with LCD TV shipments more than doubling to about 110 million sets in 2009 from 46 million in 2006, according to market research firm DisplaySearch.

Sony said an 11-inch model with a 3-millimeter screen will go on sale first in Japan on Dec. 1 for ¥200,000 (about $1,700). It didn’t provide details on when it would be available overseas but similar launches are expected in the near future. Sony will market the initial model as a personal television for bedrooms, home offices and corporate offices though it aims to eventually develop larger-screen OLED televisions. Leading next-generation television development is doubly important for Sony, which is nearing the end of a three-year turnaround plan under Chief Executive Howard Stringer. That’s because it was late to market in introducing LCD televisions.

That looks sexy
Look at those people their faces were burnt buy the awesomeness of the OLED screen!
It looks nice but a 11 inch screen, way too small,I want to see bigger.

Why change?
Well, 1994 called…
For one when this Tech hits the price of LCD/plasma Tech will likely drop, so you can probably get something circa 2001 fairly cheaply.
I can’t wait this Tech is so amazing, and versatile. Just wait for when phones, portable gaming systems, and laptops start using this tech. TVs are just the beginning.
@3 If you still use an old TV, and does not understand why you would need a LCD or other HD resolution screens, fine. You can watch any film on a normal tv, but once you experience HD its hard to go back. Thin screens are cool, since they can hang on the wall, and take little place. If you enjoy being bombarded with even more particles than the rest of us, fine. But the main difference is the picture resolution… If you watch a HD film on a ordinary tv, its like driving a Ferrari 30MpH on the highway… not fun, and rather moronic.
Empty space is not behind the TV, just in your head. But then again, if you only watch crappy AXXO encoded XviD movies.. you will never need a new TV.
for more info on this amazing TV’s see here:

@ #3
I think its time for you to get out of your cave and have a look around.
@ #8
aww so sad…someone here cant afford an LCD TV ? *COUGH*xyztynz.
anyway people who want better resolution/space will buy them.
you can stick to your ..old tv urr I MEAN food and water.
ok i smell a battle of the geek-have-to-have-what-other-cool-people-have vs the rationalistic-people
just relax already, everyone have their own preferences, so be it
@xyztynz
In my experience people who complain about individuals who want the latest tech can’t afford it. I have a 46 inch LCD,a girlfriend and a parrot. I can always get another girlfriend, replace the parrot if it dies, but I love my LCD, especially when I want to watch a movie in HD. So why complain about what OTHER people want? Seems someone is projecting. The hardcore techies make this tech cheaper for the rest of us and that’s good for everyone.
@ #12 agreed, except for your last statement. i have a girlfriend who also has an LCD.
my point is its ok to buy high-tech stuff as long you have a good reason and affordability.
BTW I was juz kidding earlier if you didnt notice.
everyone complaining about the empty space behind the new display can simply glue it to the front of the old CRT… new tech + oldschool statement.
amazing

He didn’t complain of what other individuals wanted/needed. He pointed out that, it isn’t a necessary thing, to have the most recent technology, stuff and suchlike. And he also pointed out that people shouldn’t complain if you got a LCD, Crt or whatever display you got. Just because you think it’s awesome, you shouldn’t complain. Enough said.
I find this argument not only entertaining, but refreshing for it’s moderately clean content an minimal personal attack – as compared to some of the other comments threads.
That 27″ OLED TV is amazing!!
I currently have no tv cause im waiting to buy one with FULL HD 1080 i saw one the other day at 1200 euros (in dollars its even less) with 97cm and you can pay without interests in a year, so you dont need to be rich, the hd players are a bit expensive at the moment but you can stream the movies from the pc.
I find that this is a really neat new product..
I imagine that this new flat screen emits VERY little heat…
We all know how much heat the current LCD and Plasma tv’s put out…
I currently use a 32″lcd and am perfectly happy with it.. But if this new style tv pops up into a price range I can afford, I’d be willing to upgrade, for the simple fact of the heat issues…
Just my thoughts an opinion on the new tech…

This tread is so entertaining!!!
the specks on that monitor sounds amazing.
i wonder if they have solved the problem,
with the blue color tones fading,i heard that
the lifespan of the first units,a keyboard of sorts!
was pretty low.im much more exited about the new solid state
HD’s about to come out soon:
pmsl @ #25, ive got an old 52 rpt sitting in my bedroom, and i have a soft wall Hmmmmmm time to get saw out…..
I have a 21 inch LCD girlfriend…
Even if this is the first OLED TV, that is an absolutely ridiculous price for a technology that is incredibly cheap to manufacture.
what’s a girlfriend?
WOW. I can’t believe that people are really getting heated up over this new tv. I think that it is great that Companies like sony are coming out with new tech. I don’t have a 40″ plasma, or ps2’s in my car, but i won’t be angry at those that do, no matter how aggressive they seem to come off. However, in all fairness to them, they were attacked first.
Frankly, i can’t afford all those things, but with new tech, that means that i WILL be able to afford what most people take for granted today. And i don’t think that we should rag on axxo. If you don’t like his releases wait till it comes out in hd. I think axxo rocks.
Doesn’t the OLED tech. have just around 5000hours of durability due to the Organic material breakdown?
@ 16, 29, 31
LOL
Some people prob thought they’d keep the horse and cart hen the car come out 2…..
Now that is a TV! Those japanese people are simply amazing.
@ BTech
that is a horrible analogy. have you ever tried so sit in a ford escort? there is a need to upgrade from that.
as for this tiny little tv, no one needs this.
@Michael
japanese people are good at two things, eating rice and starting wars. dumb cunt.
lee welton has a complex with another race, what a (insert a funny name). USA is good at ending them, right?
I hear everyone rave about LCD TVs, but yet every one I’ve seen has had horrible pixel artifacts around every edge that wasn’t perfectly horizontal or vertical. They look ok from across the room, but get close to them and the edges of everything on the screen are a mess. At least that’s been my experience with virtually every LCD TV I’ve seen on display.
this is a cool ass tv can’t wait to import some….LMFAO @ #32

^ Video showing the new 11″ oled tv
If only they can make one like this that is flexible…..pocket TV anyone?
sad thing is its realy a lot cheaper to make an oled tv the than lcd or plasma but new tech so they are going to cash in i can wait 5 years.
