Sony just dropped down to a whole new level of sucking. *Revised*
Does anyone remember when the PS3 was first announced? I do. The first time I saw those amazing graphics and extremely true to life gameplay I was almost converted to becoming a cross-platform gamer. That was two years ago. Today I’m still proud to be a PC gamer. Why is this you ask? Well, just 10 seconds into the Kill Zone 2 trailer I knew that there was something funny about that trailer… It was almost as if… As if it was all pre-rendered! What was worse was that the game developers actually stated that it was ALL 100% in-game footage. As did Sony’s genius PR department. “KillZone 2? Wha… In-game? Is that good? It is? Oh well in that case it’s all 100% in-game.”. And then it turned out that a lot of those PS3 trailers were pre-rendered. That’s when I started hating Sony for lying to all of their would-be-had-you-not-lied-to-them costumers.
The point I’m making is this: Sony lied, and now they’re being punished for it. You know how every company or brand or what ever, pretty much every commercial product has some sort of spoof made about it? Like the Mac VS PC ads? Yeah, well it’s bad enough when people make spoofs about your ad campaigns. This means that a lot of people really don’t like your product or your ad campaign. But when a song is written and performed, just to make your product look silly… That is the point where you, as a company, should really start doubting your super boosted ego and regret statements that basically come down to: “We are the market leaders so you’ll all buy our new product any way. Why? Because…. Ehm… YOUR GAY IF YOU DON’T! You don’t wanna be gay do you?”. I present to you, my favorite song of all time, the PS3 song!
Update: Some of you have clearly misinterpreted the gay bashing part. It was not me that was bashing gays it was Sony. But it’s all taken way out of proportion, Sony would never bash gay people in press conferences. By saying: “If you don’t, you’re gay!” I’m actually making it clear that only a homophobic, KKK associated retarded redneck would do it. I’ll be honest with you people, I did post this just to piss off the Sony fanboys. Why? Because the resulting flame wars are always hilarious and filled with misinformed fanboys teaming up as they desperately try to defend a product that they know in the back of their minds is crap. Sure MS lost a lot of money getting into the console wars but what they actually did was invest. Not lose, invest. Because right now the 360 is the most popular console for games, with the Wii being to most popular console for people who only game every now and then.

These last few months of PS3 bashing have been some of the funniest news months ever. I do not own any console (’cept for an old skool SNES that I haven’t seen in many years) so I really don’t care about what console is best. Heck, I don’t even have any handheld consoles. But everyone loves these fanboy flamewars and that’s what I gave you, front row seats to the funniest thing on RLSLOG in a long time. Enjoy.

In terms of pure graphics power PCs have already gone beyond what the PS3 can do (hardware-wise that is).
Regardless, everything comes down to games in the end though. The other consoles have tons of good games out there and the PS3 has pretty much nothing even worth mentioning yet.
Even in the graphics department the 360 is well beyond anything the PS3 has shown so far, just look at Gears of War. They keep saying that the PS3 has the Cell processor and what-not but there is not not a single PS3 title out there that comes close to Gears on the 360.

Just because the game manufacturers haven’t caught up to the technology doesn’t mean that the potential isn’t there. Sticking a physical ps2 inside the ps3 to make it backwards compatible, microsoft just used software, which unlike the ps3’s interior ps2 is upgradeable with a simple patch. Most Xbox games STILL won’t play on a 360, so your point is pretty much moot. I’ve had several friends whose 360s took a big fat flying shit and crashed completely when they applied a MS SOFTWARE patch, so bad that they had to send them back to be repaired. Seems like their software patch plan is working REAL well. Sony did what they had to do to make it work for consumers even when they clearly don’t have to make the PS3 backwards compatible, and I don’t see anything wrong with that. I’m not a fanboy by any means, but this authors of this site seem to revel in alternately bashing Sony and Microsoft for really lame reasons when they should just shut the hell up (since they’re usually wrong or just over-exaggerating) and stick to torrents, which is the whole purpose of this site.

ps3 has the cell read about it and be amazed, its going to take a while for its potentioal to be shown, along with its blu ray that holds 20 gig more than a hddvd more space more content also to note is the operating system ps3 will eventualy blow all competition out of the water, give it another year or so…

According to Reuters, “The backwards compatibility is not going to be as good as the U.S. and Japan models,” a Sony spokesman said. “Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3.”
Great. Most people probably wouldn’t mind about not having backwards compatibility, but the fact that US and Japan get it and we don’t is, frankly, galling. Let’s face it - Sony’s deal is getting worse by the day.

It would be a cheap computer if Sony released specs or drivers for hardware. Right now with Linux it’s a 800Mhz single core PPC machine with 256MB of ram and no hardware graphics acceleration, even in 2D. So, forget about such simple things as smooth video playback or anything more advanced.

Well the ps3 with linux installed wont be able to use the same graphics that it uses for games, but who cares linux can run great on a pentium 3 or lower, the xbox 360 got some great games coming up i dont like is that hd dvd sold apart maybe they should make it has main console drive that could read hd movies and play dvd games as well, the wii is pretty much a more children based console but it is conquering a few adults because of some classic games beeing released.

Games is, as you clearly see on the PC, mostly about the GPU nowadays. Compare the 360 and the PS3 with just the GPUs and their pretty much the same… only the 360 manages it’s memory better.
Also as stated in this thread, even if you install linux on the PS3 it does not allow you to do that much since it’s crippled. So you don’t get a super-computer “cheap” as some people say.
It’s bad for computing purposes and it’s bad as a gaming console. It’s also had a huge amount of problems at launch, the 1080I problem, emulation issues, overheating, etc. So it’s no different from the 360 in that regard either.
I just don’t get why people stick like flies on shit to what clearly is a horrible product JUST because of the brand. I guess Sony has done one thing right… marketing of the brand.

Sony makes a lot of mistakes when all their departments get in on the one product (aka ps3, bending over for Sony’s movie company, in the form of blu-ray, ect).
Nintendo has always had a weak spot in the more hardcore games department and has always been very “strategic” in their game release dates.
Microsoft lost 4 billion on the first Xbox, they should be out of the game, but they aren’t. That’s pure capital reserve forcing themselves into the market. Nothing to be admired, nothing to be liked, the loser way of entering a market.
Every company has their downsides, that shit doesn’t matter. Buy what suits you best and stfu please.
I read an article last year that said Sony’s consumer entertainment division (or whatever the dept was called, it’s the dept in charge of the ps3) had an operating budget of between $55 million and $70 million USD. The article didn’t say if this was their total budget or their annual budget, but it’s probably annual. Either way, the other game console companies, including Microsoft, have annual budgets for their respective depts that are at least 10 times that of Sony’s.
Also, Sony has been losing millions constantly for the last few years now mostly due to poor management. Combine this with the above and it’s easy to see that Sony is probably on their way out and may eventually close their doors.
Given this info, it’s probably a small miracle that Sony was able to produce the PS3. If the PS3 doesn’t do as good as expected on the consumer market (and so far it’s not doing well at all), it could easily mean the downfall of Sony, at least in the game console market, as they will have lost a shitload of money.
To me PC gamer’s opinions about consoles are even more funnier than those of any fanboys’. None of the consoles have won the console war yet because there was no war YET. And every hardware expert should know that PS3 has the greatest power of new generation consoles. Peace.
If X360 gets more rpg games… I go for x360. ^^ I just like rpg games. If Final Fantasy’s would come to X360 that would be “dream come true” moment.

Just to correct you Kevin (yet again), the PS2 is STILL the most played console. 360 may be the most played NEW console, but it also has a year jump on the other two. Once all those PS2 users get around to upgrading their systems, they’re going to get a PS3 because they still want to play all their old games. That’s why Sony doesn’t have to spend a lot on marketing and advertising, because they have a built-in userbase that’s just taking their time getting on board. You’ll see. A year from now, this “article” will look straight-up ridiculous.

I don’t understand how some people can be so fanatic as to state that PCs are inherently superior to game consoles. PCs suck shit right out of an elephant’s dirty asshole when it comes to action, fighting, and adventure games, compared to consoles. Some of you PC lovers criticize the PS3 for costing so much, yet the true higher-end computer systems you so adore cost around 3-4 times what a PS3 does. If all you like to play are those MMORPGs, then sure, a PC certainly outperforms a console in THAT arena, but there are many other types of games (such as third-person action and fighting games) that consoles handle much better than your precious PCs.

Goodness me, it appears lots of people are suffering wikipedia syndrome. Sony didn’t lie, they told the truth from their perspective. Realize that Sony is just the pulisher for many of these titles, which means they’re responsible for manufacturing, advertising, and marketing. They didn’t make the game trailers in question. So when Guerilla tells Sony that Killzone is legit, Sony has to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Guess what? You’re all wrong! If any console manufacturer wins, we all lose. So no matter how much you bash any console, the only reason why we’re not paying for a console just as much as we would for a full brand new gaming PC is because of that competition. On a sidenote, I’m a PS2 fan but the PS3 is a _MAJOR_ let down. Useless features nobody really wants/needs, a price that’s through the roof, screwing over Europe and STILL expecting their sales to be magically great is NOT a great strategy. jsux, I wasn’t suggesting people should throw away their PCs–hey, I love my PCs for various reasons, including all the classic-video-game-console-system emulation one can do with them, but PCs aren’t ALWAYS better than consoles when it comes to EVERY type of game. Examples, you ask? Mortal Kombat games, Devil May Cry 3, Resident Evil 2, Onimusha 3… I think PCs have virtually NOTHING to offer these days in the fighting-game arena because, for whatever reasons, the game controls nearly always wind up being shitty compared to console versions, and combining that with the fact that I’ve never found any particularly good third-person action/adventure games (like God of War & God-Hand) for the PC, I think it’s absurd for PC fanatics to try to suggest that PCs are unquestionably always better than consoles.

Is this a review of a torrent, or is the original poster just ranting about his video game console?
I have to say I have heard good things about the Xbox 360 and a couple of my friends have bought it and are constantly raving about it’s amazing online gameplay. BUT there is one big problem with it, it costs money. Sure, u might get a certain period free when you purchase the console but after your times up u have to pay for the use of it. Not only are you paying to have the hardware to facilitate online gameplay but then u have to pay to be able to use it! That’s ridiculous and just another way that Microsoft are gonna try and sponge back the money they will lose from the drop in sales of the 360 after the ps3 full scale launch. Why did Microsoft feel the need to rush their console onto the market in the first place? Because they know that their console has nowhere near as much processing power as the ps3 and that their graphics and gameplay can’t compete. Anyone who buys a 360 and considers themselves to be a next generation gamer is only fooling themselves. This is why I am buying a playstation 3 instead of an xbox 360.
You wanna know why PS3 is a big fuckup?
(1) The pre-sale overhype.
A whole year before it was released, they showed all these wonderful demos. (was it CES 2005?). It was fucking mind blowing!…Too bad most were pre-rendered.
ie: The audience feels cheated and doubts about the capabilities of the PS3 itself are questioned … All that PR momentum is lost by 2006. (You know it, I know it, Sony knows it).
So far, MGS4 has lived up to the hype in terms of eyecandy demos which aren’t pre-rendered. But we still have no idea of how it will play. You can’t say much about it, because its not out yet. (I wanna know what happens to Snake!)
That Gundam game on the PS3 was SHIT. You can tell the developers have no fucking idea how to write apps for the Cell processor.
(2) Cost.
From past history of consoles, if you exceed a certain threshold of price, the consumer won’t be interested. (That’s fact). This is why the Wii is well accepted. Its affordable. Bloody obvious.
(3) Competition.
Sony was too busy knocking on MS’s Xbox 360 in their early presentations. (Boasting how powerful their PS3 is, etc).
They shouldn’t have said anything, just show brief glimpses of the PS3 concept demo box and nothing else. They became obsessed with beating MS, wasting time & effort in countering MS PR with their PR. This is exactly what MS wants, and Sony fell for it! (Its the OLDEST trick in the MS Playbook!…This is why you remember MS’s history!)
Here’s a trick about MS if they’re gunning for your ass. You ignore them and produce the best damn product you can muster.
The most surprising thing is Nintendo pouncing out in popularity, while MS and Sony were in a dick measuring contest. See what I mean? Ignore MS, and focus on your product!
(4) Production and Design issues.
PS3 is too radical and too new. The infrastructure wasn’t well in place yet…Result? Not enough Blu-Ray diodes! Europeans and Aussies like me don’t get our PS3 release until March. (Is it March? I think I stopped caring about consoles at the end of 2006). This also has issues with (5), see below.
And what about the initial control design? “The Boomerang”! Wow, I wonder how much they spent on that?! Here’s a hint. People like a balance of simplicty, looks and usability…They don’t like over the top BS. It must be practical. Someone was smoking some “funny stuff” when they were designing that!
(5) Development tools.
Along with being too radical, the dev tools provided aren’t making life easier for game developers. PS3 is a whole new platform, requiring time to understand and optimise for. Both John Carmack (Id Software) and Gabe Newell (Valve) have clearly indicated that MS’s dev tools for the Xbox 360 are better. (When you write games for consoles, you actually do it on a PC and cross-compile the code to run on the architecture of that game console…I mean the dev kit of that console!)
MS kills Sony in this regard. Their experience in software development is one up on Sony.
Hell, even the infamous developer of the MGS series, Hideo Kojima, has hinted that its difficult to do, but he wishes to exploit it in MGS4. Which is why its taking a long time!
Now, IBM is stepping into it by providing engineers to tutor and help game developers in exposing the Cell processor’s potential.
(6) PR screwup by the music branch of Sony.
Officially, they called it “Extended Copy Protection”. Unofficially, its the infamously named “Sony Rootkit”.

People don’t realise that Sony Music and Sony Computer Entertainment are two different branches. (Same with their mobiles, TVs, Car audio, etc).
What people see, are that it all falls under the banner of Sony, and hence, its all the same level of suck factor.
Currently to some, Sony is BAD.

Cool idea. Probably desperate move by Sony (in a marketing perspective).
As a Linux user, I see this as a complete and utter belly flop to the MAX.
Why?
* You can’t access the Nvidia GPU. They won’t let you (prevent you via hypervisor) or provide the facilities for it. Way to go ass-wipes! So what’s the point then?
…so PS3 with Linux, no graphics acceleration. Whooopi-friggin-do! Slow ass VESA mode! No cool desktop eyecandy effects! No OpenGL love. Well, fuck you too, Sony.
* Memory is too little. You need to double the system RAM here Sony. Its not a computer when it runs slower than a PC! At least 512MB of system RAM in addition to the existing video memory.
* Cell processor isn’t suited for regular computing work. (I personally think they should have gone with a dual-core processor design). So a dual-core with 7 or 8 SPEs.
* Geeks need time to understand how the heck to take advantage of the Cell. That’s gonna take a while. They’ve managed to port the code over without too much issue. (as the Cell is PowerPC architecture)…But its not optimised
* Its FAR more cheaper to build a low-noise PC than it is a to buy a PS3. PS3 is also less flexible in the hardware sense. What you can do is restricted by Sony and Nvidia. (At least on the PC, an open 3D driver is being worked on!)…Hell, its cheaper to hack an Xbox 1 and turn that into a MythTV frontend!
So all this snowballs into a huge mess for Sony.
They really should learn these lessons.
They were unfocused, distracted and over-confident because of their past success with the PS2.
I don’t doubt Sony makes great hardware and electrical goods when done right…But no one is gonna fall for marketing any longer. (to cover up deficiencies)
Everyone is starting to wisen up to all forms of marketing.
Just look at the response to Windows Vista, and how MS is using the excuse of “piracy” for a reason of poor sales! They spent millions on a world wide launch for Vista, and at best, the consumer reaction was: “Meh”.
Simply put. If you make a great product, you don’t need marketing to hype it up. The product will speak for you. All you do is demonstrate it to the rest of the world.
You can copy other company’s ideas, just make sure you are actually making it better and improving the fundamental concept that the consumers like. Not just repeating someone else’s crap.
…And lastly, focus on giving the consumer fun and entertainment. Wasn’t that the original point of the Playstation concept?
Apparently, somewhere along the way, this was lost on Sony…
If Sony wants to get user confidence back, bring out a “PS3 Plus” with seriously beefed up specs at a generous, affordable price.
I’m talking 512MB RAM, dual-core variant of Cell, 120GB HDD, fixing issues with HD output limitations, fully MPEG2 capturing of video, etc.
Otherwise, there’s really no hope in hell.
I’m not a gamer, but I do keep an eye on technology itself. Its not hard to figure out why something became unpopular and f**ked up completely. The real question is: Will they learn from it?

PS1 was the only deascent console from SONY, PS2 and PS3 are for sheep, I cant even think of a game I’ve enjoyed playing on a PS2 bar GTA!!! man i feel as if i got dumber reading this fanboy article, seriously. this article didn’t even have a strong hard facts anyways. they just saw what someone might’ve heard from what they heard from their fifth cousin who heard it from their girlfriend who heard it from her best friends boyfriends… i mean somewhere along the way something gets lost in translation. unless i see cold hard evidence of something i won’t believe it.

also, hasn’t anyone noticed why the ps3 is doing bad right now. it’s because of the games, not the hardware (although i realize that you cannot play games unless the tech issue is addressed). the ps2 won this generation’s console war because of their gigantic library of great, good, and decent games. xbox was clearly the hardware winner and gamecube (if i remember correctly, it’s been a while so i could be wrong on this) isn’t that far away. yet consumers didn’t care for that because ps2 had a better library of games that people enjoy playing. xbox 360 is winning right now because it had a head start before the others and has a lot of games in its library right now (gears of war anybody?), wii is doing well too because it had that killer app in zelda and wii sports. ps3 has no games yet, until i guess gran turismo (the same killer app that sold a lot of ps2’s when it first came out) or metal gear solid 4. btw, i’m not going to address the pc issue because i haven’t really play pc games to see what’s its strong points and weak points other than the obvious upgrades for strong and “have to play with others” for weak.
every console has its strong points, 360 is great for fps a la gears of war or halo, wii is great for party games, and ps3 is good for its rpgs (and god of war 3… maybe). every console has its deficiencies too, 360 isn’t backwards compatible to its fullest, the wiimote horror stories, and the pr/tech fuck ups of the ps3. personally once i graduate next year and get that job i’m going to buy all three because each console has both its strong and weak points, but in the end its all about the games.

I just re-read some of the comments, i was bored. Some of you are just plain retarded.
First the ps3 is ahead of the wii but behind the 360 in power, it’s a fucking FACT.
Second, it’s completely the line up of games, and the fact that the ps3 hit a YEAR after the 360 and the wii was out first. It’s pretty simple, 360 with a line up of games for 500, wii with like 8 games for 200, ps3 with barely a game in site for 900.
Like I’ve been saying for awhile now, give sony the same time in the market as their competition and THEN you can bash them all they want.
No ,I’m not done. The ps2 had PS1 hardware built into it for backwards support, as does the ps3. Why? Simple you morons, it’s better to run the game on the hardware than in emulation. Find me a *good* ps2 emulator and of course it will be that same lonely 1 working ps2 emulator. Take a look at the PC requirements of running that, and compare that to the hardware the ps2 actually has. There’s a HUGE gap, cause it’s takes ALOT MORE POWER to run ps2 emulation than simply dumping the old hardware in it.
Didn’t hear you bitching about the ps2 working flawlessly for all but a handful of ps1 games.
Again, sony didn’t lie about anything, they showed you ingame videos running o nthe SDK as they always do, all game companies do this. They never once claimed it was real time console playing, just ingame video.
But that’s beside the point, 60 some posts and they are all the same lame crap showing the rest of us most of you are either 12 years old, or have the mental capacity of a 12 year old.
When the 360 hit the market it was AHEAD of pc games in terms of power. Not anymore, no console can steal the lead for long, and as it is now, the money spent on a ps2 can get you a monster gaming rig without the LCD.
Anyone trying to argue console gaming is better than PC gaming is young and has to be under 15, it really is that simple. Don’t argue points you don’t understand, don;t come here quoting bullshit as fact, some of us actually do RESEARCH these products.
Out of the 3 next gen consoles the ps3 is, unfortunately, the weakest. Why do i say unfortunately? CAuse I’ve owned a ps1 and ps2 and still use my ps2 alot. Sony runs lines of games I like, always has always will.
It’s not even about prodcut loyalty, it’s about games. Traditionally the games I like come out on ps2 and 6 months to a year later on the xbox, and I’m not willing to wait that long.
The 360 is riddles with problems, just go to your local retail store and jsut ask how many they had to send to microsoft after x-mas, you’ll be amazed.
I personally saw a game that was left in the drive over night that now has RINGS BURNT INTO THE DISK!
I’ve used a Wii and it’s fun, for awhile. I’ve played on the 360 extensively and it’s not all that. Neither is the ps3. The fact that this subject can’t be broached without the ensuing bitch match is pathetic.
