Sony in the lead of Christmas TV sales
Sony Corp. won the fierce competition in the U.S. for TV sales during the holiday season as it beat out rivals offering lower-priced products and shipped the highest number of LCD TVs, which are becoming the dominant model. The Japanese electronics company had a slow start last year because it was late in offering a lineup of fully-digital LCD TVs, but it jumped four spots from the previous quarter to take a 12.8% share in the key October-December period, according to the latest data by Texas-based research firm DisplaySearch. This was the first time Sony took top share in North American LCD TV shipments.
The results, however, also showed the continued volatility in U.S. market share in the face of unrelenting competition. Electronics manufacturers have said that prices fell at a faster pace than they expected last year. Though they all reported increased sales of TVs, their quarterly earnings have suffered from a decline in profitability. Sharp Corp., which had the largest market share in the July-September quarter, fell to No. 4 with an 8.4% share, losing nearly 3 percentage points. Vizio Inc., a privately held Irvine, Calif. company that rose to the top spot in the second quarter, fell to third place with 10.7% share. Vizio, which outsources its production to Asia, has rapidly become a major TV player by selling its ultralow-priced televisions through retail chains like Costco Wholesale Corp. South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co., the biggest producer of all types of TVs world-wide in terms of units, came in second.

In my opinion Samsung manufactures better TVs and at ,usually, lower prices for the consumer.
I also tend to think that Samsung is a better manufacturer than any other on the market
yes Samsung’s prices are cheaper. But somehow, their build feels cheaper too e.g. plastics etc. similar to LG’s IMHO. you get what you paid for… but I believe almost all if not all LCD tech/panel/materials on both Sony and Samsung are from 1 single source… that is S-LCD Corporation, a join venture betwen Sony and Samsung.
who cares
i just bought a 46″ Samsung F81 damn it’s better than 46″ BR4 Sony,
it have 500,000 colors, game mode,…
i just checked thow Tvs beside each other, and samsung was awfully better.
Be very careful when buying a LCD, especially over the internet. Manufacturers don’t guarantee a perfect monitor only that it has no more than a certain percentage of duff pixels. You can get a brand new monitor with a bright stuck pixel on it and the retailer will claim its okay quoting some ISO standard and refuse to swap it. Best to buy from a store and see the one you will get working before handing over money. Nothing worse than blowing a fortune on a big screen and getting a stuck pixel.
samsungs are nice but the philips picture quality is way better when i compare it wih my mates.
cant beat pioneer 508xd plasma
so what’s the real difference between LCD and plasma? Which should I get, I’ll probably get two before the summer. Thanks for any help.
OFF TOPIC
http://www.thepiratebay.org/ is down?
Samsung 4071F FTW!
tito, plasma is dying off in europe at least very heavy compared to lcd, i bought a toshiba and got a free hd-dvd and the quality is exceptional, i work in the electronics industry and i reserached teh hellout of it,
i was under teh impression that sony stopped prducing lcd a few years ago so this is some acheiment
Plasma need a power plant in the backyard to run.lcd is much
nicer to the wallet and inviroment.
We have 2 32in Sony Bravias Lcd tvs.
The V2500 and the the older V2000.
The newer V2500 has a worst picture.
So my experience is that even within the Sony Brand there are different degrees of Quality. Average to Excellent.
and also from what I know plasma runs out of gas in about 5yrs while the only LCD risk is to have some dead-pixels after the same period of time
Sorry for OT question, but does anyone know some private/public tracker with scene XXX releases only? THX!
the sony bravia xbr4 is the best lcd on the market for the price the xbr5 has a few more bells and whistles but the pic is the same the sammy comes a close 2nd but sammy’s are know to have problems ……
sony’s are the best, but i have an LG and it has been perfect so far (6 months), connected into my computer, 1080p is pretty:)
thanks for help ppl! i’ll be looking for lcd’s
I bought a samsung ages ago and i don’t plan to buy another. It’s like everything in the uk they bump and con everyone prices in the uk are usualy double what they are in the states and other countrys so i stick to what i need i have no concern for sony profits.
Really, kinda useless “news” isn’t it? =P
Sony adverstised more, there LCD TV’s are crap.
I got a L.G 42inch LCD over a Sony Bravias of the same size.
They where next to each other in the store and the L.G looked like it had a way better picture. I have been very happy with it ever since.
@12 you call yourself an expert? Plasma is not dying in Europe, it just started.
Technical test December 2007, Consumertest January 2008
LCD:
1. Panasonic TX32LX700F and 70F (testscore 84, cons. 9.7)
2. Philips 42PF7621D (testscore 76, cons. 9.2)
3. Sony KDL40W2000 (testscore 68, cons. 8.7)
Plasma:
Panasonic TH42PV700 (testscore 86, cons. 9.7)
Panasonic TH37PV70 (testscore 85, cons. 9.8)
Samsung, LG and Sharp scor4ed belo65, aswel as types of the above 3 (PanasonicSonyPhilips).
One exception: Sony KDL32S300 scored 76 and cons. gave it a 9.2
Sony and Sharp are the leaders in LCD but Panasonic for plasma.. one of the reasons why sony had the largest amount of sales during the holiday season is because they were giving away perks to employees. basically the more sony’s you sold the more rewards you got. I got a ps3 and digi cam out of it
. im a sony fanatic soo i really dont care that samsung has a game mode lol..xbr4 vs the samsung 81f? who would compare that except for the guy that wrote he bought a samsung. sure bro what ever makes you happy. cheers
I’m getting an X3000. I have done my research between the LCD’s and Plasmas and the X3000/X3500 are the best available for the price. The only models which slightly beat the X3000\X3500 are the new Kuro’s but you can add another £1200+ to the price of the X3000/X3500.
Yea i saw this on click on the bbc,Sonys back in the for front with these new lcds.
Somebody please help me out.
I bought a new LG L226WTQ 22 inch LCD Monitor. The colors are great but whenever there’s black on the screen,it looks kinda gray.
The scenes in movies which are at night, appear gray instead of dark black.
If someones wearing a black suit it,it doesn’t look solid black but shiny/gray black.
I read somewhere that this is called backlight bleeding and its normal in all LCD displays. Is this true?
They also said that even replacing the LCD may be of no use as there will be some backlight bleeding.
Is there a way to fix this??
@6 Dead Pixel,
A couple years ago, my friend bought a small LCD TV and as soon as he hooked it up, we noticed there was a dead pixel in the corner. Since it was too late to take it back that night, he decided to leave it hooked up and return it the next day. By the end of the night, there were THREE dead pixels!
Samsung and Sharp both manufacture better LCD HDTV’s.
@29 these are the flaws of LCD displays, that’s why LED BackLight displays are coming to replace them
we will have a greater B/W contrast on these flat displays now
I thought i’d never say it, being a long time Sony TV fan,
but the 32″ Toshiba I bough a few months ago is quite good for the money.
yes Toshiba and Sharp offer better bang for the buck
OMG, Christmas IS OVER. Why post this now?
Samsung, and Panasonic the best lcd tvs, if u r smart u will never buy a sony tv, just my opinion…
@27 Peter Parker , i have Sonys 40 x3000 for almost 3 months , it comes at a high price but is well worth it when you watch Blueray on PS3 ,if you havnt been here already check this link for all you need to know on this panel

I bought a Samsung 30″ Slim-Fit Widescreen TV and I have been perfectly happy with it.
I love the picture, the sound, its perfect for my room.
What about House 412?
LOL! Sony Baloney! They screwed me with MD. Then they screwed me with their MemoryStick garbage. Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice, FU too! I was hoping HD-DVD came through. too bad. If Pioneer came out with OLED tomorrow, I’d take it.
plasma far better,no smear on fast motion scenes, due better response, better colour spectrum, and very true blacks KURO 508XD big thumbs up!!!!!!!!!! one downside beware of screenburn
We bought Samsung 40H71. Absolutely awesome.
Sony looked nice, but with little calibration Samsung looked much better than Sony. I don’t really understand why people pay premium for LCD. Ok with analog quality of the receiver made big difference. Assuming digital signal, and pretty much the same panel any TV could look like any other competitor LCD ( within the same generation ). So why pay premium for Sony?
I used to be Sony ES guy, but never again.
well, what really helped the boost in sales was the promotion that sony had in australia.
Free ps3 with every legible sony bravia that you bought.
Plasmas are better IMO. I own a 42″ Pioneer (best plasma maker out there, My girlfriend has a 42″ Sharp, and the picture from that doesnt even come close to the Pioneer.)
#13 i dont know where you got that info from. At the very basic, plasmas have a sharper/clearer picture, while lcd’s have a brighter picture. If I’m not mistaken plasmas also handle action and fast moving images better.
#44 my previous post I meant Samsung not sharp.
petty none of them are as good as the Trinitron CRTs were…
you guys suck! samsung is a great tv but not better than sharp and sony! sony, sharp, panasonic, pioneer, samsung, toshiba, jvc,lg and all the other crappy brands like prima thats my list of what comes first. maybe i like sony just because i’ve always liked them and that im getting a 46xbr4. or maybe its cuz they got amazing reviews and have great customer service..not sure..or maybe its because i work in the electronics industry and i’ve compared almost all tv’s and still to my eyes sony and sharp are the best..but not the 64u version of sharp thats not good at all..cheers
Samsung 4665 BEAUTIFUL Picture!
LCD’s are better. Lighter, Less Electricity. Bought from amazon. Great Price. Great Delivery!
@49
Well at the moment, the Kuro’s (plasma) are the best TV’s available picture wise however the Sony X3000/X3500’s are the best LCD’s on the market, especially for under £2000 for the 40″ and 46″. I can’t wait to plug my PS3 into one. Sony’s X5000/X5500 will be out between September and November this year but I can’t wait that long.
