Sony decreases price of PS3 by $100

Sony Corp., the world’s biggest game-console maker, surprised the industry by cutting the price of the PlayStation 3 in the U.S. by 100 dollars, or 17 percent, responding to the widening lead of Nintendo Co.’s Wii and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360.   Starting Monday, the current 60 gigabyte model will cost 499 dollars, down from 599, in an effort to spur sales of the struggling video game console. The announcement came two days before the E3 Media & Business Summit in Santa Monica, California, where dozens of Sony rivals Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo Co. were expected to show off their latest games and related products.

The price cut is part of the company’s upcoming strategy of eventually offering downloaded high-definition movies, video games, movie trailers and demos, Sony spokesman David Karraker said. Karraker said Sony would use the E3 show to focus on two areas: ways to increase the number of consumers who own PS3s and other products such as the PlayStation Portable handheld system, and expanding the system’s library of available games. In April, Microsoft began selling a version of its Xbox 360 with a 120-gigabyte hard drive and a souped up high-definition video connection. Called Xbox 360 Elite, the black-colored system sells for 479.99 dollars.

Doesn’t sony already lose like 100 bucks per console before the price cut? Sooner or later they are going to be bankrupt :)

    Too little too late.
It’s still by far the most expensive console on the market, and offers the least in terms of gaming experience. They would have to cut prices by at least 50% if they wanted to get any signifigant sales.

And it doesn’t cost them more than a few pennies to build a console, they just have some bad buisness analysts telling them to stick to their rediculously high prices.

This is excellent news – I’m going to the States in a few weeks and they’ve just made it even cheaper :D

After conversion, it was already about £100 cheaper than those sold in the UK, but now it’s piss-takingly cheap – I can’t not buy one \o/

o man, this is great! i especially think it’s funny as hell because of all of those idiots that spent over $1000usd on one when they first came out. just goes to show ya, patience is a virtue.

Is it true that sony has changed the european versie, so that you cant play original ps2 games on a ps3 console.
If this is true i never buy a ps3, or maybe if it comes i wait for a harddisk loader, i have for 40 gig isos of ps3 games backupped, i hope there comes a time i can play those backups.

Please somebody makes a Harddiskloader for the ps3 console

    July 10th, 2007 | 14:19

500 euros for a system that has BLue ray included its a great deal cause standalone players are more expensive and we all know Ps3 will be better than x360 just wait for more game development cause the launch was rushed , x360 to me only has to offer forza 2 the rest of games doesnt look quit interesting.
P.S if i was rich i get both but life is made of choices

The only way to drive down prices in Europe and the UK is to Boycott buying the unit. If we do this Sony will be forced to drop the price……. they have sales targets to hit and shelved units dont help. Its the same with any product, dont buy it and the demand lowers therefore prices lower too! We just have to stop the nutters paying over the odds to be first with the new toy. Its already present in many other areas, housing, clothes etc etc especially in the UK. If there is over demand for something prices go skywards. Rant over and YES! patience is a virtue all good things come to those who wait :)

In Australia a 60GB PS3 retails for $999. Yep, you got it, a thousand bucks and the current equivalent of 850 USD! Now if deciding whether or not to fork out a grand of your hard earned cash is not a physchological barrier in the mind of the consumer, then I don’t know what is! Finally, Sony is waking up to the mess they created with their crazy pricing, but so far only a price drop in the US. Too little, too late? The PS3 probably already qualifies for the all-time marketing blunder of the gaming industry.

what do you mean with this?

  23. July 10th, 2007 | 16:08

@3: I heard they already lost around $200 per console when it first launched. They’re saying now that manufacturing costs are cheaper, they’re not losing so much and are able to drop the price…like they weren’t forced to anyways due to lack of sales.

@4: Drop the price 50%?!?! That’s impossible! Every console (well, maybe not the wii), even the 360 LOSES money when they sell it. They make it up on games and accessories, so they really make a profit 4-5 yrs down the line.

    Anyways…

The price has dropped $150 in Canada, from $700 to $550. The XBox Elite also costs $550 there so it’s not too bad, considering the Blu-ray is also included. If that format wins, then it’s an amazing deal.

Also, thanks to the drop, ps3 sales rose up 2700%. It wasn’t a suprise at all with the $100 price drop. Everyone knew it was gonna happen soon.

super stardust hd makes it almost worth buying… almost

  26. July 10th, 2007 | 20:18

The price cut is ’cause they are gonna sell ps3’s with bigger hard drives… it’s not because of “making more customers” or begging people to buy it…

I just love how everyone seems to think that they are the expert on how a company should sell their products. This is clearly a marketing stunt to add to sonys usual e3 hype.

    July 10th, 2007 | 21:23

Love it or hate it guys nothing is going to take the min-E3 hype away from the Wii!! Nintendo is owning the Console market, they are just months away from overtaking the sales figures of the Xbox 360 and well PS3 lol … been there did that.

  29. July 10th, 2007 | 21:28

costs $667 here at Saudi Arabia and there’s not enough internet speed to play online UNLESS you pay much more. overall, i’ll stick to playing PS2 or PC games 1-2 years more.

Well, about $550 CND. Pretty nice I must say. I bought a 360 last week and probably would’ve picked up a ps3 instead if it was that price.

    no pricedrop in europe

    Europe gets a PS3 starter pack at a price of 600 euro’s

Sony has stated many times that the PS3 may not receive a price cut in Europe but will provide more of a value proposition. Well we have received news that they are going down the road of adding value by releasing the ‘PS3 starter pack’ for 600 euro’s which comes complete with a 60GB PS3, Resistance: Fall of Man and Motorstorm as well as two SIXAXIS controllers.

  33. July 16th, 2007 | 17:39
