Sony cuts price of 80GB PS3, announces 40 GB version

aOk all those fans that are still running low on cash can rejoice now…not. Its gotten cheaper but at what cost. Giving a spiderman 3 blu-ray disc free with the 40 gb may fool the kids but the lack of compatibility with Ps2 games is a pretty hard hit for many.(I personally want to get the 60 gb version because of its mid range price and support for ps2 games)

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) today confirmed that it will introduce a Playstation 3 with a 40 GB hard drive on November 2. The new entry-level model will be priced at $399 (USD/CDN) and include the movie Spiderman 3 on a Blu-ray disc. The company also has cut the price of its regular 80 GB console to $499, down from $599.

Besides the smaller hard drive, the 40 GB PS3 has the same key technical details of the 80 GB version. However, the software emulation capability for backwards compatibility is gone in this model: Sony confirmed that this console will not run PS2 games. Gamers looking for this feature will have to shell out $500 for the 80 GB version.

Sony justified this move by stating that the removal of the backwards compatibility feature reflects a “more extensive line-up of PS3 specific [game] titles,” which may sound strange to those who are comparing the available games for the PS3 and its competitors. Could it be that the difference between a 40 GB and an 80 GB hard drive cannot justify a $100 premium these days and another feature had to be sacrificed?

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16868110016

    according to this:

    Cons: VERY IMPORTANT: This version does NOT feature the Emotion Engine (meaning a built-in PS2 chip). This means currently Sony is developing a SOFTWARE based emulator for PS2 games on PS3, and many PS2 games do not work. The 60GB version has the Emotion Engine built-in, and thus is compatible with almost all PS2 games.

    so does the 80 gb have ps2 compatibility or not?
    60gb sure does

    The 80 gig version plays about 33% of Ps2 games (the popular ones)

    The 60 gig version plays all of them

    Who cares about Backwards Comp.. honestly?

    #1 Who plays Ps2 games anymore anyways?
    #2 If you have a ton of Ps2 games then you probably already have a Ps2 system
    #3 There is no Ps3 that plays Ps2 games as good as a Ps2. The only good one is the 60 gig verison which is discontinued. THe 80 gig one plays about 30% of all Ps2 games(and not as well I might add)

    Did you buy a 360 to play your old xbox games? of course not. Save yourself $100. or atleast don’t factor BC into your decision.

    Hunk of crap in either 40GB or 60GB version, I’ll buy one to use as a door stop in my XBOX360 room.

    As #13 states, PS2 support is really a non issue.

    If you have PS2 games then either you A) Already have a PS2 or B) You have an odd fetish for collecting games on a console that you dont have. In either case that would make you a moron for factoring in backwards compatibility as a buying criteria……. If you are random like #10 im sure you can get a used PS2 on ebay for $50 or less.

    The 40GB PS3 is a good buy if it didnt even play games and was just a BluRay Disc player with a 40GB hard drive, but in addition to that it is also a game console; to me that is an obvious decision. I bought my 60GB PS3 for $900 cash from a person that stood in line on launch day, seeing as how they were going for $2,000+ that day on ebay i am still happy with it :D

    A very important pro of the 40gb version not mentioned here are the fact that it uses 45nm processor instead of 65nm processor, thus generating less heat and less noice, now at the same noicelevel as PS2 (stays at lowest level even after hours of playing), and consumes 100watt less power when in use compared to the 60gb version.

    @ 15

    Don’t be daft, of course it’s an issue. I’ve not bought any of the Playstations, however if I was to start I’d certainly get one that could play ALL the games, there are PS2 games out there that still have plenty of shelf life.

    @15

    for some, bc definitely is an issue. ps2 games that run on the ps3 are usually vastly improved graphically, especially if you have a hdtv, because of the upscaled and much sharper resolution via hdmi. i’ve played games like mgs 3 on the ps3 in 1080p via hdmi and it looks a hell of a lot better than component output from the ps2. almost like a new game.

    October 19th, 2007 | 07:18

    @20:
    Yup, this is something everyone seems to have forgotten. The PS2 had the greatest library of the last generation, and the PS3 can upscale them all to 1080p HD. This is a resolution from 640×480 (Ps2’s native resolution) to 1920×1080. As you could imagine, this means much sharper, crisper looking games. Your old PS2 games will look freah and new all over again.

    The emotion engine chip is present in some consoles depending on location.

    If i’m not wrong the Japanese and Singaorean consoles have the chip, but sets sold in Australia and the US do not.

    Not being able to play PS2 games could be serious for some gamers.

    I have a XBox 360 but I have found myself playing old XBox games on it lately due to the fact I can get great games for like $15 and less at gamestop. That gives me added value. 360 games are ok but the ability to play original xbox games has helped me enjoy my 360 more.

    Bottom line is that SONY is trying to compete and they are in last place while everyone still wants a Wii. Hell i want one now and only way to get one is on ebay.

    @24: Get out.

    @23: Damn straight. The biggest pull for me getting a PS3 will be playing old PS2 titles on it, since the PS3 only has two other titles I want (Resistance and Tekken DR). This really isn’t such a great idea for Sony–the idea of one unified console that played three generations of their games was good, but now they’re removing even that.

    all i can say is good luck to sony because as soon as they crack the 360 like they did to the xbox1 and allowed new programs to be installed on it then sony are going down once more because when ever has sony consoles been great for homebrew aplications ?

    never

    as for wanting to play old ps2 games on the ps3 .. stupid idea .. ps3 is for ps3 games not ps2 games .. so what about playing ps2 games at 1920×1080 .

    ive never yet layed a sinlge xbox1 game on my 360 because i never baught it to play old games lol

    people have there own say on things so everybody is correct in the end ;)

    i’ll just wait for about 3 years to pass befoire i buy a ps3 since theres no games coming out for it anyway yet ..

    theres been how many offical ps3 games released ? (not including the 360 ports)

    ps2 was a dream, softmod, hardmod, you name it, homebrew out the ass, you are on crack.

    Not wanting to sound like an Xbox/Nintendo fanboy, but Sony seem intent on killing themselves with these ’strategic marketing’ moves to gain some sort of foothold in the console wars. As soon as they do something ‘right’, they have to ruin it by doing something equally ‘wrong’.

    Microsoft & Nintendo got something right that Sony clearly got wrong. People want Xboxes & Wiis, not because they are the most powerful console around (That would be the PS3 for this gen), but becuase they do their job, offer great entertainment and *gasp* value for money. – I don’t want to gawp at FPS rates or beautifully rendered textures, high polygon counts or processing power if the games are the same old tired formula but with spruced-up graphics.

    Sony should have just made a good games-specific console from the off, instead of focusing on trying to impress people with high specs, and now, instead of trying to appeal to a market sector who all already own Xbox360s or Wiis. But they STILL cannot deliver something that the people want. Sony are trying to dictate the PS3’s sale on their own terms instead of listening to the public, and actually making the console more appealing. At the moment, only hardened PS2 gamers have any interest in the console, and even they are grumbling cos of the hit-n-miss backwards compatability.

    Sony should just call it a day, learn from their mistakes (and the successes of their rivals), and focus on something that the public might want – a decent, relatively cheap system which has a good strong games lineup from launch, brings something new & unique to the table, AND has decent backwards compatability. – The Wii managed it, and look at the success that the graphically inferior Nintendo console had!

    How Can Sony be even more dumber, cutting backwards compatibility on ps2 will ruin their gaming console even more. This is the killer of ps3 like eat is the killer of the 360!

    October 19th, 2007 | 11:43

    Does this not prove that Sony has lost in the Next Gen Battle.How far are we in a year with very little results on top quality games.I buy a console for games not for blueray movies & it really seems that xbox has the quality where as sony doesent i know where my pennies are going.

    I got a 60gig ps3 here in the UK and did cost about 650. I bought it to play PS3 games not PS” games, the only one i play is pro evo 6 and thats about to go cause new one is out on thurs. But PS2 games are jumpy and glitchy on PS3 anyway, every one ive tried is so its not even that good. HOwever the ps3? now that is amazing, i dont care what anyone says about it, if you have one or youve played one then you’ll know, they’re simply amazing, they’re only gonna get better and the games catalogue? well theres only one way that can go too. look at the ps2 at the start and look at the games on it now, to be honest i cant bloody wait.

    October 19th, 2007 | 12:32

    Why are people dissing backwards compatibility in here when the PS3 has an absymal lineup thus far? Exactly what are PS3 gamers supposed to play on their new systems while waiting for something good to come along?

    Backwards compatibility is a great, great thing. I have an old copy of Hunter the Reckoning on Xbox that I bought ages ago, hoping someday my 360 will be able to play it, but I reckon I’d better not hold my breath.

    Oh yeah… @32. You poms should quit moaning, cause in good old rip-off Australia we’re looking at about the equivalent of $850 for the same damn thing!

    @34

    When you say things can only get better, you’re also saying they can’t get any worse.

    With that in mind, I know if I had a PS3 I’d want it to be able to play PS2 games, and I think it’s fair to say a lot of others would want the same.

    Wii one or two nice games but gfx arnt too great
    x360 best lineup of games but high failure rate of consoles
    ps3 no games, no bc, way too expensive

    if only i could get a 360 that doesnt fail after 6months i might be tempted otherwise im skipping this generation

    I don’t see what the big fuss is all about.

    If you want to play only PS3 games (and there are some people for this market) just buy the 40 gig version and save 100 $.

    If you wanted to play PS2 games you should have got the 60 gig version when it was available (like i did)

    If you want to play PS2 games (or want bigger storage) but don’t mind being pissed off if some of them don’t work due to software emulation compatibility issues.

    actually i did! i bought it and played halo2 on it for almost 6 months exclusively. ive got over 20 games now, including the POS called halo3, and still occasionally go back to my original xbox games. it was a major decision breaker to buy an xbox premium for that very reason. IMO i would stay away from the new 40gb ps3

  44. GViper
    October 20th, 2007 | 13:44

    now having had this in the uk recently, i know a touch more about the details. just to clear up the emulation issues –
    60gb (US + JP Only) full emulation
    80gb – software emulation – think xbox 360 type updates
    40gb none. at all.

    in addition, the 40gb version loses 2 of the 4 usb ports, in addition to the multiple card reader function of the bigger model. possibly other things like that, but I really can’t think of anything else. oh, and a chrome strip is missing, or somesuch.

    We will only have the 40gb in the uk. Import time, especially with that currency coversion!
