Sony closes 8000 jobs, cuts investments
Sony said Tuesday it would cut 8,000 jobs in reaction to sluggish sales, particularly of its televisions and digital cameras. That number comprises regular workers and represents 4 percent of Sony’s entire workforce. Sony also said it plans to reduce head count in its seasonal and temporary workforces. The move is aimed at slashing $1.1 billion in operational and investment costs. Sony’s investment in the electronics business will decrease by approximately 30 percent in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2010. That includes plans to cut investment expenditures this fiscal year by outsourcing part of the company’s proposed increase in the manufacturing of CMOS image sensors for use in mobile phones to third parties.
According to Sony, certain short-term measures have already been taken, including adjusting production, lowering inventory levels and reducing operational expenses. But the appreciation of the yen means that the Japanese manufacturer will need to adjust product pricing, downsize and realign domestic and overseas manufacturing sites, reallocate its workforce and reduce head count. Sony’s moves will have global impact. For example, the company is postponing plans to invest in production expansion at the Nitra plant in Slovakia, which assembles LCD televisions for the European market. Further, the manufacturer plans to close two overseas manufacturing sites, including the Sony Dax Technology Center in France, which manufactures tape and other recording media.

well Sony sucks so i couldn’t care less. there tv’s as crap compared to other top brands. there cameras are way overpriced for there quality. there mp3 players well i never ever seen a single person who owns one. the ps3 is way to expensive compared to other consoles and not really much different to the 360(apart from blue ray). the phones they used to make were rubbish and didn’t last long at all before they vanished. there just a Big company who only care about money not quality!!! theres my rant about sony lol. ps happy Christmas all
It is shame that this big enough investment is postponed here in Slovakia, however i think this could be expected, just check SONY on stock exchange market. Anyway, not so bed for Slovakia as for now, as we will be most probably the fastest growing country in whole European Union next year (meaning GDP), nevertheless this is just the start IMHO. The end of this World crisis is definitely not close – unfortunately. Hmm let’s play some games or watch some nice movies.

Good riddens sony time to bring on some real competion, should be at least the same price as competition, they wont die but they have learnt a lesson the greedy buggers or silly for the high production cost, yea it has blue ray but it also has less games and worse graphics proven on many ocations, im not here to argue i know im right, and i know how stupid all you Sony fan boy’s are.

Anyway, this whole PS3 vs Xbox 360 argument is getting soooo old. You either like one or the other or don’t even care.
I have 3 360’s and I’ve recently bought a 46″ Samsung 1080p LCD and want a Blu-Ray player. Sure I can get a cheap and nasty one for $100-$200 but the PS3 is actually a damn good Blu-Ray player. I’m getting Little Big Planet for free with it but I won’t be buy any other games for it, I’m still a 360 game 100%.
So, point of story? The PS3 is a GREAT Blu-Ray player that plays games.
TJ, you obviously have no idea how people make games. because the 360 is a sh*tier console than the ps3 games developers make games specificly so that they will run on the 360 and then port them to the ps3, this means that the game wont be using the ps3’s hardware aswell as it could if the game makers had more money to spend making the game work properly. and if you look at the graphics comparisons of console exclusive games, the ps3 wins hand down.
and a message for the people who think the ps3 is over priced, i spend about £1000 on a pc which is only half as powerful as the ps3, and if i wonted to get a bluray drive, that would mean i would have to spend another £150 to £200, which makes it £1200, thats 4 times as much as a ps3. so the ps3 is very well priced.
sony do overprice there over product for what they are, but at least you know your getting quality products, and now with price cuts and jobs cuts, that quality might suffer. which will suck.

imo Sony have quality but overpriced products.
in saying that there are better options for cameras and tv’s etc that cost less and have just as good if not better quality than Sony.
Sony was once a great company. leaders. these days they are a joke of their ancestors. even the Koreans make better electronics now. not to mention other Japanese companies like Panasonic or canon.
their run downhill started when they stepped into the entertainment business, purchasing half of Hollywood or and the music industry.

and if you cant read i am using british pounds, and yes it is only half as good, ps3 8 core 3.2ghz processor, my pc 4 core 2.8 ghz processor, ps3 has blu ray, i have dvd rw, ps3 rsx graphics card, my pc nvidia gtx 280 (thats almost the same but little differences in graphics card specs make big differences in games), ps3 512mb xdr ram, my pc 4gb ddr2 ram (xdr ram has a much higher speed of transfer so doesnt need lots).
