Sony announced firmware upgrade for PS3

Sony on Monday dated and detailed PS3 firmware update 2.40, a gameplay upgrade that includes in-game Cross Media Bar access and Trophy achievements to facilitate nerd cred. As previously unveiled, PS3 update 2.40 will introduce two features already popularized by Xbox 360; a universal system menu during gameplay, and an achievement system that tracks, records, and shares player accomplishments made in game. Firstly, in-game XMB “means you can access the PS3 menu at any time while playing most games, simply by tapping the PlayStation button on your controller,” say Sony. “With 2.40, you can check if any of your friends are online (thanks to their own user profile), read and send messages, change some settings for games, all without having to quit the game you are playing.”

With regards to the Trophy system, all in-game accomplishments will be recognized with either platinum, gold, silver, or bronze hardware, depending on how much content has been unlocked and at what ranking. Xbox 360 recognizes accomplishments with a single Gamer Score, a total of all unlockable points acquired. Sadly, Trophies will be limited to only a handful of games at launch, and they are not retroactive, meaning any supported will have to be replayed to acquire a Trophy.

This machine looks awesome…. why cant MS make a good looking system. The X-box was ugly and the 360 is no better. I so want to shove my p3nis in the card reader and hump away! I do not like online gaming so the function is useless for me but I am sure people will like the added feature. Way to go Sony I love you guys! 27. papasmurf
    July 1st, 2008 | 02:29

Its like the 360 but it doesnt RROD, doesnt charge you to play online, has a blu-ray player, flash card slots, true HD capabilities, doesn’t depend solely on sequels and FPS games.

sounds awesome… bcuz it f’ing is.

  28. insertclevername
    July 1st, 2008 | 02:34

    @27 Papa Smurf

BUT….The 360 cost about 200 on ebay, is easily flashable to play downloaded games, theres a usb slot, TRUE HD =720p or 1080P upscale JUST like PS3 most games are native @ 720p

AND HAS THE MOST GAMES FOR ANY CURRENT GEN SYSTEM..

SO quit being a sony fanboy.

ohh..and if my 200$ xbox does break i’ll buy a new one and still spend on 400 since the games are free with DL dvds and a burner.

    =D

  29. HDpunk
    July 1st, 2008 | 02:36

the only reason you can play burned xbox games is because xbox is still useing last gen dvds. where ps3 was useing the next gen blue ray from the start. if xbox had choosen to use BR or HDdvds for their games, then we would all be playing games with better graphics.

    free online = terrible experience
trophy = bootleg game score, still not as cool
blu-ray = them pushing the next tech that they own on you so theres no competition
home = even more loserly and nerdy than myspace
metal gear = halo 3, well they both sucked, but metal gear has been way to weird for way to long
360 = over 4.5 million different ids have played cod4
ps3 = no vibration and everyone skipping (lagging) around online

Bluray storage does not improve graphics only storage capacity on the disc.

Some xbox360 games have to use 2 discs because they don’t fit but thats about the only drawback, but dvd loads way faster than Bluray when using for games.

Well i had the 360 and now i have the ps3 and in terms of communication 360 is way better.I can be playing a game receive a chat invite during game and talk while playing,I’m sure ps3 will get there but for those people that bought the ps3 when it came out there is no way they can claim it’s better then the 360,only the future will tell.About being free it’s like local vs cable tv,if you pay you will get better service.Another downside it’s people playing the “great” feature of the ps3 the wireless capability causes server to have a bunch of “ping glitchers”.Wireless for games sucks!!!

It amuses me to see the PS3 kids still think allot of people get RROD.
I had one once on the 1st gen xbox’s and I fixed it myself, while I was at it I also flashed my firmware… and its still working 3 years later.
    Free games anyone?

Fact is Sony is copying all the features that made the 360 a success when it comes to online play.
Some people may still get RROD, but at least on the 360 we don’t need a patch to get our online play working correctly with nearly every fricking game.

How many people here actually give a damn about Blu-ray yet? Id bet on the most part we all download films anyway, put them on usb and the 360 will often play em and upscale them really well.

While you Sony kids enjoy your 360 clone us 360 owners that had these features since day 1 will be on the XBL service with the most games and where all our friends are :)

  41. Sucitta
    July 1st, 2008 | 03:13

I own all 3 systems. Hands down, games looks better and run smoother on the ps3 ! Currently the 360 has the edge, but only for now. Once Home launchs, and sounds like this firmware should make the communication alot better, you will see why ps3 will be number #1.. You can take games like cod4 and gta, and run them on both systems like i have, at the same time, and my 360 is in 1080p HDMI, and my ps3 is in 720p HDMI, and its very obvious which system has more power. You can actually read things on ps3 versions of games that you cant read on 360, things in the distance pop in and out on 360, and just overall, ps3 is so much more detailed.

But i will always play my Wii for games like marioKart and smashBros, and I will always play my 360 for games like Banjo Kazooie or Viva Pinata, but when it comes to competitive shooters or fantastic games like cod4 or gta, its just plain stupid to play them on the 360… New battleField is another great example of how diff a game can look and feel, on ps3 its a beauty, on 360, its meh, lol

    that is all = )

  42. Core2
    July 1st, 2008 | 03:14

Except one thing, the ps3 doesn’t get the RROD :(

The fact is the 360 is so much superior in hardware and software designs. Hell we are getting MGS4 and Killzone 2.

  43. Sucitta
    July 1st, 2008 | 03:19

xbox 360 cost to microsoft was 660$ per unit

cost of Wii to nintendo per unit was 300$

cost of ps3 per unit to sony was more then 900$

keep that in mind people, they have lost Billions of dollars just making the machine that will run the next 3 years, and even today as i said ^^^, you can clearly see the differance, and very much feel how the big games play on both systems, and its not even a debate anymore, ps3 has much much more power, and because of this, games look and play better…. amen = )

  44. Smiff
    July 1st, 2008 | 03:30

“Oh noez, ps3 is better so now we have to make up things we don’t know anything about”. Really, 360 clone?
@21 “craptacular….still no backward compatibility” Yeah and thats why I play the games I had for my ps2 and ps1 even now.
@28 “most games are native @ 720p” Yeah, for 360. Games such as MGS4 and Drake’s Fortune both play at 1080p, among others.

“AND HAS THE MOST GAMES FOR ANY CURRENT GEN SYSTEM..” Quality not quanity, for example, whats the point of having a house full of women when they’re all 80 yrs old and have every vd known to man between them?

@30 “free online = terrible experience” what? free = good sh#%
“trophy = bootleg game score, still not as cool” nah bootleg is when every system copied off of ps1 when it became the first SUCCESSFUL system to use discs not cartridges
“blu-ray = them pushing the next tech that they own on you so theres no competition” ok, so whats the point of new technology if no one is going to push the envelope?
home = even more loserly and nerdy than myspace
“metal gear = halo 3, well they both sucked, but metal gear has been way to weird for way to long” i’ll reluctantly give you that one
“360 = over 4.5 million different ids have played cod4″ I’m sure ps3 has just as many if not more or at least proportional to people who own systems
ps3 = no vibration and everyone skipping (lagging) around online DS3, ive never once lagged online

@31 Bluray storage does not improve graphics only storage capacity on the disc. “actually thats not true, mgs4 is only a 29hr game but it requires several discs for 360 disc’s/dvd’s

@33 communication on 360 IS better than that of the ps3, but thats not alot to brag about but I will give you online play until home comes out, it’ll be like merging xbl and sims, no matter how much anyone dislikes sims its a cool and interesting combo.

“Some xbox360 games have to use 2 discs because they don’t fit but thats about the only drawback, but dvd loads way faster than Bluray when using for games.”

actually it doesn’t on a blu-ray disc extra data of the game is stored on various empty places in the disc for faster load times

Ah theres one sony kid now using my name :) . Has ur mommy not told you its bed time lil boy?
Oh wait, she says hi. Shes kind of busy right now playing with my ballz. Grow up child.

The PS3 does not get RROD but it has a useless blu-ray player that on the most part anyone with a pc doesn’t care about yet…
I will get a blu-ray burner/player when they come down in price for the pc.

Unless you have been living under a rock MGS4 is already out, it ends with them all dying (but snake) in a graveyard :)

Killzone 2… id put money on the fact you will need some kind of online patch once its released just to play it right o.O

I want to play games, I want to burn them and movies to disc. Can I do that on PS3 – no. Can I on 360 – yes.
I want to chat to my friends without having to go through a huge fricking menu just to find what im looking for, 360 does that right but by the looks of the video’s Sony has you jump through hoops.
Notice how they also sneak in that it will only work on some games unless a game developer releases a patch.

Why does it have to be one or the other? Why do people feel the need to justify their purchase? Both have their positives and negatives. I own a PS3 and Wii because I wasn’t as big a gamer (PS3 made me one!), but I definitely wanted a high def player and next gen console. The PS3 was the no-brainer choice for me, but I don’t feel the need to rip on 360. It has a fantastic catalog of games, and I’ve heard that XBOX Live is a great experience. Unless you work for Sony or Microsoft, why do you tear the other system down?

The funny thing is, that even with all this fanboyism, when all is said and done nintendo owns both sony’s and microsoft’s consoles with one simple but genius thought about gameplay rather than pure hardware power. I’d rather give my money to people who really innovate. If it would be up to sony or microsoft, in 20 years we all would be sitting in front of our PS9’s and xboxwhatevers still playing the same games in the same way we play them now, with no improvements besides graphics and sound.
And no: I don’t say the Wii is better in any way for anyone. I just wish Sony and MS would stick the same kind of recources into gameplay development they use for hardware improvement.

You PS3 players all cling on to the fact that games are slightly, yes, slightly better on PS3 then it is on Xbox360. You really don’t realize that theres more to a videogame then graphics, and Sony is just realizing that now. Look at the sales for each console yourselfs. Who wins? Wii. Even though thats has the worst graphics of all 3 videogames. What counts is gameplay and price. Sure graphics also count but not at the expense of the first two.

Who wants to pay so much money on a PS3 when you can have practically the samething a lot cheaper with XBOX360 just with slightly less detailed graphics but with better online gameplay and free games? Seriously. You have to either be rich ( still a waste of money) or just plain stupid to spend so much money on a PS3 for slightly better graphics. The diference in graphics isn’t worth losing the gameplay ( Wii), better online gaming (xbox360) and paying a LOT more money for it. It’s just that simple. And I’m sure Sony won’t make the same mistake again.

70, Sony has a different marketing with PS3. Sony knows that graphics is not everything (They did it with PS2). But they did intended the PS3 for high-end (for now). Why? Because they’re still selling the PS2 (low-cost, lots of games)

Their move is a bit silly but come to think of it, it actually works.

People who like to buy a cheap console with lots of games, would buy a PS2. And people who have lots of money to spend would buy next-gen. It’s that simple.

The only thing keeping the Xbox 360 alive is the North American market and pirated games. If you look closely, it does not perform well in EU and Japan / Asia.

Well I own a Xbox, PS3 and shortly a 360, 360 is not better in hardware *laughed at that post* its has a cell cpu and blue ray player ;P

PS3 has been undoubtably a slow release you saw that with the lack luster of exclusive titles, and even sony admitted the fault with SDK to the developers and had to rewrite it, over the next few years the PS3 will be smiche.

I see my PS3 as a media unit at the moment I play my movies/tv eps over to it tversity is your friend, cheapest Blue Ray Player, but I would of liked to have seen Voice communications natively at the PS3 level and not at game developers level and the lackluster of online content.

360 I see as a cheaper venture for free gamming, but hey if the PS3 gets unlocked ;P then what…

    XBL Gold Card (12 Month) – £39.99
    DVD-R DL x 5 – £13.99

So lets say the in shop price of a game is £39.99, on my modded Xbox 360 that means im saving £185.96 & get 5 games.
Even if you add on the XBL gold card im still saving £145.97.

So while you Sony boys pay for a console with pretty much no graphical difference & then £39.99 for every single game, I and many other Xbox 360 users will be saving money and be getting great games that look pretty much identical to the PS3’s anyway.

Whats your comeback going to be Sony boys, that it will RROD?
With all that money I saved I could buy a new one easy, or I could fix it myself with the link posted by Core2 (49).

    It all adds up :)

360 was first to market with a custom made unified shader gpu, quite some time before cards like that hit the pc. sony chose an off the shelf solution which isnt as advanced and as pointed out by others has limited memory bandwidth. real world difference is hardly significant, most people posting here seem to think ps3 visuals are better. i own a ps3, i bought it for blu ray playback for a new plasma and im not disappointed by this at all, it was well worth it. The clincher was when they announced xvid support, and finally obviously to play games. As it turns out the increasing number of hdrips on here means i now just burn or stream them to the ps3, so you can get “free” stuff for the ps3, its just a different soultion than the xbox. Sony has killed hd dvd by offering studios region locked solutions for their movies and they have many a player in homes now, the future of this format and a lot of revenue (sony pictures!) is garaunteed, people will still have a ps3 kicking about to play hi def movies by the time the next xbox comes out and beyond, and it will still be making them money as the ps2 does now. So no i dont think sony “regret” anything, the delay to market was necessary. Had ms delayed to put a toshiba hddvd drive in their machine the situation would look different, but sure they knew what they were doing, probably related to the fact they knew they wouldnt sell many in japan regardless. Ps3 is quiet! 360 is a haridryer at best. 360 is obviously better as a gaming machine from a value/functional point of view. it IS hard to argue with that and thats why im thinking about getting one, if i can find a noise mod

The worst thing about the xbox360 fan is that its not that loud initially.
I had 2 xbox360s i bought of ebay one for 215 and another for 175 without controller, both were so loud i sold them to buy a new one.

It was quiet, for the first day or two…then weirdly it got about as loud as the old ones. I’m not sure if the newest ones are any quieter, but im not gonna bother, maybe i’ll switch the fan sometime later.

Also, Its not about which system is best statistically or even hardware wise in the end, when the ps2 came out it was overpriced and had lots of problems with the dvd drive initially before a few revisions..

then xbox1 came around a year later, which apart from the hideous big controller was undeniably a superior system yet sony still won the last round by far. so heres to prove graphics isn’t everything. Games were.

Now everyone is arguing about how much better the ps3 is versus xbox360 but in the end they are the closest matched systems ever. Statistically they are both 3.2 ghz CPU and 500mhz GPU so the difference is minor much smaller than with pS2/xbox1.

“you have to pay for xbox live”
    - Yes, we pay for Xbox live but get free games which more then covers the cost.
    “backwards compatability is limited”
    - As is the PS3’s.
“it has a 33% fail rate”
    - Not surprising the amount of time people spend playing the darn thing, blame the games for being too good.
“microsoft killed the 1st xbox after only 4 years”
    - They have already stated they have no plans till around 2012 for the next Xbox.

I would rather pay for XBL and have no probs talking with friends & getting into multiplayer games then have issues connecting and a few weeks later get a patch.

Xbox 360 is the best place to play your games because:
    A) There free
    B) They have a better multiplayer experience

So basicly people say the xbox360 is better just because you can rip the games off. I bet microsoft love that.

I was tempted to buy and mod the 360 but the 33% chance of is RROD in the first year was a bit too high for me. Then I hear the fan is loud and the xbox PSU can overheat and die (or set your house on fire). And then on top of that if you accidently knock your 360 while playing a game it destroys the disc.

I suppose thats ok if you are playing copies but i just cant be arsed with it, too much hassle for me i’ll just stick to the PC for ripping off games and PS3 for the exculsives that just dont get released on PC.

Just get one after the E3 price cut and do the penny fix while its working and get a internal fan mod.

As for it setting your house on fire, its not like its going to burst into flames while your away. My guess is someone tried to do the old “towel trick” which went wrong & for obvious reasons.

Also the moving of the Xbox 360 while its on problem was solved with the newer DVD drives… that issue was only in the very first batch of 360’s.

Allot of the stuff PS3 users bring up is old dated news that since has been fixed.
As I said in a previous post, I fixed my 360 and its still working 3 years later. And my other 360 in my boy’s room has had no faults whatsoever.

ps3 dualshock 3, look it up moron. As well any online skipping you may encounter depends solely on your internet connection, and lack of knowledge to properly configure it.

Ps3 online play over my wifi works like a charm in the few games that I’ve bothered with.

Anyone thinking the ps3 is copying the 360 is a moron, it’s not like the 360 developed all this stuff, and it’s old hardware, hence all the defects,

Firmware 2.40 comes out 4:30am GMT (too many posts to read to see if this has been stated elsewhere).

The PS3 was sold with the SIXAXIS because Sony were in litigation with the company that provided the vibration technology for the DualShock 2 (and 360’s rumble feature) until March 2007.

    @82 SuTuRa

It’s all down to how much time and money the developers are willing to spend on making a PS3 version of a game. I think the best looking multiplatform game available is Burnout Paradise. Criterion EA did a fantastic job.

You will start to see differences in 1st party games and games released toward the end of 2008 and through to 2009. What people need to remember is that developers only started to get the best results out of the PS2 (which was vastly different to anything available) several years down the line. The same will happen with the PS3 and there’s a reason why games such as MGS4, Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII will never come out on the 360. Note that Sony have not thrown money at the developers for exclusivity either.

Developers who know what they are doing with the PS3 have stated that it can do many things that the 360 can’t (an example is the new Ghostbusters game coming out) BUT, this is a business and things have to be weighed up as to whether or not what they can do and what they should do are financially viable.

Another thing to consider is that developing for the the 360 (and the original Xbox which was a Pentium 3) is very similar to developing for a PC. The PS2 and PS3 are different models and development has to be approached differently.

Video section is coming to the PlayStation store, but unlike XBL, you can rent OR buy HD films. My PS3 has 24 HD films on it, taking up 129GB of space. This is not possible on a 360.

The problem that I and many other have is that the 360 (as a piece of hardware) cannot offer anything new. It doesn’t have DivX support (it has MPEG4 support and if you don’t believe me, ask someone at DivX Inc), it cannot do 7.1 audio due to hardware limitations (HDMI 1.2), it will never (EVER) get Blu-ray, it’s loud and spoils film watching (I shouldn’t have to turn up the volume to max in order to hear a film) and the biggest HDD is 120GB (my PS3 has a 250GB inside).

    @90 thecube

You can’t. I think Lichen_King was answering a literal comment. You can copy PS3 games if you have a BD ROM on a computer but you cannot play them. Th PS3 is extremely secure and Sony are not about to let hackers get the better of it. New PS3 firmwares are mandatory to install. If your PS3 is net connected, you cannot sign into the PSN until it’s installed. Sony will be MAC banning any consoles which are detected that do not have the correct firmware, just like M$ do on XBL.

    @87 Chad Warden

You do know that the PS3 was launched with a SIXAXIS which is a motion sensing controller. Sure it’s not used in the same way as the Wii’s but motion sensing was a feature when the console launched. The 360 apparently is the one which is “copying” as they are launching a motion sensing controller too.

For people moaning about HD gaming, as of the end of September 2007, the PS3 had 24 games which were NATIVE (not upscaled) @ 1080p. Not bad for a console less than a year old. The 360 in comparison had… 3.

Super Stardust HD will also be the first game to receive trophy support. An update will be available a few hours after firmware 2.40 is released.

  92. Logi

Xbox 360 does play Divx, it has the streaming support remember. Thus far the codec pack has also played anything I have given it and upscaled it extremely well.

Who cares about how many movies I can store on my 360, its a *games system* – I can watch movies on the PC for free!

The 360 was designed to play games 1st, play media 2nd. So really who gives a damn if its a little loud, you dont even notice it if you have a decent sound system.

As I said, it states that it supports MPEG-4 Part 2 which is not the same as being a DivX Certified product which the PS3 is as it’s officially supported by DivX Inc. Yes the 360 supports a large amount of available DivX/Xvid content but it won’t play them all. This was stated by Bruce Lidl at DivX Inc. Streaming doesn’t mean anything as the PC decodes the file. I DivX films to my PSP but that doesn’t make it DivX compatible.

The PS3 (just like the PS2) has been marketed as more than a games machine. This marketing strategy killed off HD DVD. Sony want to reach more than just gamers and 127+million sales of the PS2 which still outsells the 360 in some territories say that they got it right once and could do it again.

People say that Sony forced Blu-ray on to everyone but they had the right idea putting everything in one package, without having to buy everything else because of choice.

How many million 360’s have been sold which cannot be used for online gaming because they don’t have a HDD? The only saving grace and the reason why so many 360’s have been sold is because it’s cheap enough to buy again if and when it gets the RROD. I read it all the time on forums. If it gets the RROD, send tit to M$ to fix, sell it on eBay and get a new one. Apparently the RROD is acceptable because it costs next to nothing to replace. Sure the 360 has done a lot for gamers BUT it’s hardly a well designed console. 3 years on and they are still 2 revisions away (next revision is coming out in 2009, not 2008) from where they want the console to be to eradicate the RROD.

    @81 Joshy

I believe M$ actually said that they would support the 360 for 7 years. They didn’t say that they wouldn’t release a new console in the mean time. This is new ground for M$ so who knows if they can do it. The PS1 was supported for just over 8 years and the PS2 is about to start it’s 8th year, will games still planned for 2009. M$ dropped for the Xbox for strategic reasons and they could very well do the same with the 360, if it becomes financially viable.

Moan all you want about how you would rather pay for XBL than live with the PSN. We still get pretty much everything you have but for free, unless you really think that paying for MSN messenger is worth it, because that’s just about the only difference between what both services have to offer now. I’m looking for to Life coming out for the PS3. It will be an amazing (non gaming – shock horror) feature.

For those with a 40GB PS3 wanting backwards compatibility, it’s coming… soon… and the UK/EU will see evidence of this before America and Japan (but keep it quiet).

    @99 Joshy

The “Moan all you want” wasn’t directed at you, just the various people who bash the PSN when it isn’t as bad as many make it out to be. Can anyone tell me of their experiences of Bad Company on XBL? I guarantee you that it’s not as good as the experience to be had on the PSN.

The question people are starting to ask is what does the Gold subscription offer over and above what the PSN offers for free? Eurogamer ran an article last month and they concluded that it was MSN Messenger for cross game text chat, cross game voice chat and a universal friends list. Now 2.40 is out, 2 of those 3 things are gone so now all you’re paying for (over what the PSN has to offer) is cross game voice chat and that will be coming to the PSN soon for free. The PlayStation Store will also have HD film downloads but you will be able to buy (as well as rent), another thing which the XBLM doesn’t offer.

IPTV was supposed to be out this summer (now) for the 360, but there is absolutely no word of it. PlayTV however is coming this year for the PS3. M$ were also supposed to be planning some kind of TV service with BT in the UK but that hasn’t happened either.

The graphics rely on how good the developers are on coding for the PS3. Criterion EA seamed to have mastered this compared to other parts of EA, and Valve… well, they have already admitted that they can’t code for the PS3 (stated in an interview with C&VG), which is why many of the Valve titles will come to the PS3 after the 360 and PC versions are out. Criterion should take over all of EA’s upcoming games or give them pointers.

You will see some major advancements in exclusive titles (Killzone 2, FFXIII, Little Big Planet, God Of War 3) and not so many (graphically) in multiplatform ones because developers want to keep things similar across the board wherever possible. As I mentioned before, the PS3 version of Ghostbusters will include features in the gameplay that the 360 cannot do (interview with a developer on QJ.net). Whether or not the game will be any good is another matter.

Bad Company on XBL is great, over on the 360 we are also getting DLC (Conquest multiplayer mode & maps) – im unsure if this is coming to PSN.

The main advantage of any title (supporting multiplayer) on the 360 in my opinion is that it simply plays better.

R1) They have less network issues and none of the games require a patch to play online from day 1.
R2) Bigger network, more people to play with.

The gold subscription is cheap and the XBL services is up pretty much 99% of the time without issues for every single game.
I have my 360 modded to play copies so as Mike posted in post 75 im saving a hell of allot of money.

Microsft skipped one 360 update a few months back & its now rumored that the next update will overhaul the current dashboard with over 100 changes/new features.
