    Wow, this really sucks ass…
It won’t run in ANY other refreshrate than 60Hz (thus forcing anything else will make the game stop running/not start)
And there is no key configuration…
And you shoot with ctrl and control the ship with the arrows, wich makes you unable to go left and right while shooting… -_-

If your unable to map the keys in game(I would assume you could even if by the cfg file)if you happen to have a gamepad/controller around use it with a program called joy2key and problem solved.

    @28 Mr. X,

I had the same reaction when I read the minimum requirements (although in my case, I have 1.8Ghz). The Amiga used to run games like this (admittedly with less colors and a smaller resolution) on a 7Mhz CPU!

The one thing that truly surprised me though are that the minimum and recommended OS versions are exactly the same. Usually, if 98 is supported at all, XP and above are recommended. Also, DirectX 8.1 is both the minimum and the recommended version.

While you guys talk quite nitched games, why not post about this one: http://www.bit-blot.com/aquaria/ as it got ‘warez’ released some days ago to :)

Also one of the better games I tried this year.

    December 15th, 2007 | 17:36

After dl’ing this and actually playing it, I can say this much:
I’ve never sucked at sidescrolling shooters, and (not bragging, just trying to make a point) I’ve always been really good at games that require really fast reflexes, like fps’s, BUT
This game is insane. 6 tries on regular difficulty, and I couldn’t beat the first level. 2 tries on very easy, and I Still couldn’t win. I think Battletoads was easier than this.

the graphics are nice, as well as the framerate — weapons suck, gameplay is boring. i think i got used to geometry wars pace. but yea this game looks pretty but plays wack.

Will this run on Windows 95 I wonder.

  60. Phil Urich
    December 16th, 2007 | 09:37

I figure there’s probably tons of other, already-free sidescrollers that aren’t, yaknow, obvious console wannabes (saying it’s “720p” instead of having actual resolutions, and locking at 60 Hz? Ouch). I checked quickly which games I could have installed by default in my OS:

    chalker@pegasus:~$ apt-cache search shoot | grep em-up

    criticalmass – Shoot-em-up a la galaxian
    criticalmass-data – Shoot-em-up a la galaxian (data files)
dodgindiamond2 – Little shoot-’em-up arcade game for one or two players
    geki2 – Xenon-like vertical shoot’em-up
    geki3 – R-Type-like horizontal shoot’em-up
grande – vertical shoot’em-up in the spirit of Xevious
rafkill – vertical shoot’em-up similar to Raptor: Call of the Shadows

I’m sure many of those have Windows ports, and I’m sure Ubuntu’s repos have way more than that (after all, shoot’em-up is a pretty specific and arbitrary search term).
