    Is this any better than DVD Shrink or DVD Fab Platinum? Because those are the two main programs I’m using right now…

    @4 EmperorAtahualpa

    if you get anydvd to disable copy protection you can rip and compress all in the same process.

    I thought clone dvd was a free program? The original program I got a while back was free (I think)

    This thing is pretty damn fast (about 12-15 minutes to transcode a 1hr 30min movie with extras stripped from DVD9), shame it only utilizes one core. Quality is pretty clean (for 84% compression onto a DVD5). If this had a multiple passes option it’ll be a much better application.

    @14.
    If this had a multiple passes option it’ll be a much better application.

    No, it wouldn’t be better. It does not reencode the video, it simply transcodes it. Multipass does not result in better quality transcoding. Multipass only makes sense with CCE, TMPEGEnc and other MPEG-encoders.

    How is it that this release includes an installer for 2.9.1.4 when the latest official release from the Slysoft site is 2.9.1.2? It’s not just misnamed because the filesizes are different. Did they get an advanced copy, or did someone tinker with the official version to create this? Makes me wary of installing it.

    January 15th, 2008 | 00:02

    I forgot to add that version 2.9.1.2 has been available for download from the Slysoft site since at least mid-Novenber. No mention at all of a new version.

    this application is awesome when used with anydvd!

    but what’s with this version being higher than the current release on the site? is it a beta or something?

    I use dvd shrink in conjunction with nero. If converting an avi or something I use convertx2dvd. They don’t phone home as much ;)

    Good program but has many issues, the worst of which is that, in my experience anyways, it refuses to read alot of discs, saying they are no good. And I mean alot. Like 2 in 10 sometimes. Switched to ConvertxtoDVD and copy2dvd a year ago and not had a single disc that was “no good” as this program says.

    dvdfab does exactly the same thing as clonedvd but it doesn’t need any extra software like anydvd to do it :-)

    use your brain…get what’s better

    This software fast & easy to use but does not give a good quality for movies that uses more space, if you want a better quality you should get “Pinnacle InstantCopy” it takes more time but gives the best quality. Use it with AnyDVD to remove copy protection.

    I’ve been a user for two years now and let me tell you, it was money well spent. And like everyone stated, don’t forget anydvd, they go great together. Happy burning everyone.

    @28 I agree, quality means a lot, so people don’t hesitate to spend a little extra.

  33. mr salty
    January 15th, 2008 | 14:09

    @16 if it had 2 passes or more it would help a little…clean up the video on the additional passes…but passess are more effective on a complete re-encode…but then again thats only usefull on high compression…like 60% or so…but then i’d rather split it on 2 discs…to save time and get better quality

    i assume people know that this is a beta?
    here’s the changelog:

    Fixes the “time map bug” from 2.9.1.3 beta.

    Version 2.9.1.4: 2008 01 14
    - New: Improved layer break handling
    - Fix: “Clone 0″ error with some discs
    - Fix: If a PGC contained multiple programs per chapter, parts of the PGC
    were blanked.
    - Some minor changes and improvements

    if you want a really easy to use program, this is brilliant. best way to do dvd9-5 is probably a CCE method doom9.org has all the details

  37. mr sweety
    January 15th, 2008 | 18:00

    @Mr. Salty
    I’d say between 85 and 99 percent, transcoding will not dramatically reduce the video quality. 84 percent and lower – better re-encode with e. g. CCE. You’ll noticee the difference on a 36″ screen.

  38. mr salty
    January 15th, 2008 | 19:10

    it also depends on the movie…alot of movies today have alot higher bitrate than it really needs…i remove everything except main movie so i usually end up with untouched video or very low compression needed…if its high i just use a dl dvd.
    cce is getting a little outdated…i prefer hc encoder or procoder…but this is way off topic lol

    January 16th, 2008 | 15:13

    DVD 9->5 :
    Use DVDRebuilder with CCE.
    It takes more time, but the quality is much better…

  44. mr salty
    January 16th, 2008 | 15:28

    cce isnt very good…hc encoder and pro coder are alot better
    on low compression its better to use dvdshrink…go to doom9 forum and read

  45. mr sweety
    January 16th, 2008 | 18:23

    @mr sweety
    hc encoder better than CCE? Since when? Procoder IS better, that’s true. But HC encoder… I doubt it.

    And I remember dvdrebuilder being not too good. Last time I used it, it re-encoded each chapter instead of re-encoding the whole movie. Therefore it lacks the ability to apply high bitrates where needed in the movie.

    DVDShrink is still a very good transcoder. In the old times (God, I feel soooo old ;-) ), DVDShrink was better than CloneDVD. But over the years CloneDVD may have become better, since DVDShrink hasn’t been updated for 2 or 3 years now. :-(

    So, CloneDVD plus AnyDVD are a good choice. Or rip the DVD with DVDFabDecrypter and use DVDShrink for transcoding.
