Skype still doesn’t work properly
The online telephone service Skype was not working for much of the day on Thursday, leaving its 220 million users, some of them small businesses that had given up their landlines, without a way to call colleagues, customers and friends. Executives at Skype, a division of eBay that is based in Luxembourg, said its engineers worked throughout the day to bring the service back online. But they said that while they had pinpointed the source of the problem, they still did not know why it had resulted in a network failure, and they could not ensure that the service would be running smoothly again by Friday.
The Skype network uses a so-called peer-to-peer infrastructure, meaning that calls are routed through other users’ computers instead of a central hub. But it does have servers around the world, known as supernodes, that manage access to the network. A flaw in a crucial piece of software that connects users to these servers appears to have been the source of the problem. Skype engineers said the flaw existed in every copy of the Skype software that had been downloaded since the service’s start in 2003. Skype executives said they still did not know why the error, sitting dormant for four years, suddenly crashed the network. They cited problems with the Internet backbone in some parts of the world as a possible contributing factor. The service now reports over 2.7 million people connected online, but it’s still far from usual 5 M+ on normal day. I’m wondering if they are going to somehow compensate people paying for SkypeOut, but that’s probably not going to happen…

Thx for the info Martin,just installed a new firewall and i thought it was the reason for the application not functioning well,spent half an hour trying to configure the firewall,anyway skpe is still not functiong properly till this moment.

Boooooooo to Skype, boooooooo!
a company that gives up a landline and expects something like skype
to be available 24/7/365 deserves to get in trouble
I was thinking exactly the same thing dciple. Who on earth would depend on a free service for a company?
I agree too. and it’s doubtful I’ll get compensated for the entertainment system going down for the entire duration of my korean air flight
arnt there many others such as skype programs to use? and cmon its like were dependent on technology omfg one thing goes down every does as well it would be funny if all electrical stuff went down for a year around the world how u all think we would end up
And to think I have never even heard of this before…
Skype has a pay feature, and I’m sure that alot of people use this feature…
But I don’t use Skype, or Vonage.. I like my land line….
VoIP is the future.
Keep in mind, landlines also had problems back in the days.
- And still do, if theres construction and the lines accidentally get cut.
skype sucks.their top-secret-non-open protocol makes it impossible too be “the solution”.
Skype isn’t even real VoIP it is VoP2P. SIP works great with ENUM …but Mr. Kazaa-already-was-a-piece-of-shit-stroem thinks he can keep on stealing shit…e.g. MY MONEY for not renewing skyeIN-numbers but charging.
…at least it is not MSN.
I end up using Team Speaker yesterday,
god help me
I use Gizmo with a D-Link 1402S for almost 2y it kicks skypes ass

skype is for fags
I was pulling my hair out because of SKYPE yesterday and did some searching and found this: http://www.icall.com/
It’s basically the same sh*t as Skype but outbound calling was free. I was able to call long distance, and cell phones in the US. I didn’t try canada though. Anyhow, it worked good. It also said it doesn’t support USB phones yet but mine was working fine, I just switch the audio settings. I also used a usb headset with no problem. They don’t have a mac version but I tried it with Parallels and it worked as well. But only with plug in headphones and a plug in mic. The usb didn’t work. Anyhow, good luck.
Why would they compensate anyone? SkypeOut isn’t a subscription service, it’s pre-paid calling credit. You’re not losing money by not talking.
here is one of the possible reasons for the massive crash:
#!/usr/bin/perl
# Simle Code by Maranax Porex ;D
# Ya Skaypeg!!
for ($i=256; $i>xCCCCC; $i=$i+256){
$eot=’AAAA’ x $i;
call_sp();
}
exit;
sub call_sp(){
$str=”\”C:\\Program Files\\Skype\\Phone\\Skype.exe\” \”/uri:$eot\”";
}
Skype is for douches, WI-FI is the future. If there is a wireless network near your house (high probability) you will have free phone service that is virtually undetectable. WEP encryption aint shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit
is that j dizzle from FFC ??
Nope #22 this is jdizzle1337 FTW (lol) no crews or site affiliations necessary
all hax, all day….. catch me if you can.
p.s. public proxies are useless
cool info
Has any VoIP ever worked properly? Everyone I know that has it complains of dropped calls, jacked up volume levels, and overall crappy service, be it Skype or Vonage or whoever. This doesn’t seem like news so much as it should be a warning to anyone thinking of losing their main line (land or cell) for VoIP service.
