Skype connects with Sony PSP
PSP owners will finally make good use out of the system’s voice-over IP functionality, with the official addition of a custom version of the online calling service Skype. With the next scheduled firmware update, users will be able to download a completely functional version of Skype for the PSP. In addition to making phone calls to existing Skype users, PSP owners will be able to manage their contacts list, see who’s online and who’s not, make and calls to/from actual telephone numbers, and have complete access to Skype account settings.

According to Sony, this functionality only works properly with the newer slim version of the PSP, further creating obsolescence for the original model. The firmware update is slated for the end of this month. A Skype icon will be added to the “Network” category of the PSP’s Xross Media Bar. Users will also be able to create a Skype account directly from the portable system. The feature will require a nominal download, so a Memory Stick will be needed to access the program.

i would think that if you have the money to afford one of these, you already own a cell phone
Very nice, looks like PSP is in.
Lol it doesnt make the fat PSP further obsolete >.>
Homebrew already pawning Sony and staying one step ahead. There is homebrew to turn your PSP into a SIP VoIP Phone now >.> which is imo better than just only working for Skype
I want a PSP now…
They must have gotten cheaper…
Video of Skype working, here:

They’re also releasing the GPS with Go!Explore in the US and in Europe (finally!). You’ll have 3D maps of your city with 3D monuments and 3D landmarks, which is a cool thing if you don’t have already a GPS nav system in your car.
Press release here:

They are also releasing a keyboard which is the same size as the screen, and that you can fold to cover the screen when you’re not using the psp using it as a screen cover.
SOny is releasing it at the same time as the psp -crappy- camera which already exists is Japan since 100 years ago.
Skype wont work on PSP fat, only on psp slim which has 64mb of RAM. They tried to reduce the RAM use on SKype, but it wasn’t possible, which sucks because I have a fat psp.
Fanjita and teamn00bz released a homebrew app for VoIP which is pretty cool. There’s no headset/microphone for the moment though (you can use that japanese Talkman game’s microphone). The app is called Furkip and it works with the m33 fw, downloadable here:

Anyway, psp is getting more and more interresting.

Thanks for the extra info.
Here’s some P2P news for you….

SIP Phone is already released in Homebrew few days back.
http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=83844
Which is stable and works on OLD/NEW PSP.
already using the homebrew one but i would think Go!Messenger would be better for calling/messaging because it already looks polished and its got video as well plus a WHOLE LOT MORE why bother with skype unless yer gonna call a “real” ph and if so why not just use ya cell ph, ive had my psp since day ONE so i am a fanboy , bring messenger not skype!
Skype is crap, FuriKup homebrew for the win!
I love the PSP. Loved the original, till it was stolen off my bunk at college. Then I bought a silver slimmy version, which I felt was cheap. It was “too” light, and flimsy feeling. Don’t get me wrong, the PSP is so freakin’ connected and able to do just about anything, but the slim version waters down the design. I want my old heavy PSP back!
btw, gps, camera, and skype…”Are you surprised?” of course not. PSP is like a linux computer. Do anything to it. It’s constantly becoming more of a multi-tasking behemoth rather than just a portable gaming solution.

#1 do you have to have much money to have cell phone???
I can’t believe Sony changed the specs of the original PSP for the new, slim one, so that ‘phat’ PSP-owners can’t use the Skype service…
I thought consoles were about ‘one spec to rule them all’, but Sony just threw that out of the window.
lol. Give homebrew makers a few days or weeks, and im sure ya will see Skype on fat psp >.>
