Six more months for Windows XP

Given its history of moving deadlines at a moment’s notice, it hardly seems surprising that Microsoft is keeping Windows XP alive even longer than expected, but its latest move looks particularly bad for Vista. The apparent decision to allow OEM computer sellers to offer disks that downgrade installations of Windows Vista to XP until the end of July next year clearly bumps up against the period when Windows 7 might be released.

Partners originally had up until January 31 2009 to provide the Windows XP Professional recovery media with machines running Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate. Now they have until July 31, 2009. Microsoft had previously said it would end the scheme next January, but the continued lack of demand for Vista appears to be behind the change of heart. If the move is confirmed, it’s yet more bad news for Vista, as XP users may have the option to skip the unloved OS entirely and move straight to Windows 7.

“it’s yet more bad news for Vista, as XP users may have the option to skip the unloved OS entirely and move straight to Windows 7″
Or if W7 will be as bad as Vista, then move to another platform…
Since W7 uses Vista’s kernel (at first MS said it’s going to have new kernel), I wouldn’t expect much from it.

Why do people hate Vista so much…? Maybe in 2007 it was awful, it was buggy around launch etc. But now I’ve been using it for 2 years and it’s really quite nice to use. XP seems like 5 years ago.

Most people want an easy-to-use and aesthetically pleasing OS, and vista really is quite easy to use.
DirectX 10 is useless, but that’s another matter (why would anyone game in dx10 if the performance hit is so bad?)
All new software is vista compatible and I mention that it’s nice look at?
I bought an OEM copy of windows xp professional and installed it on a 2nd hdd in case of any vista *mishaps* and I almost never dual-boot into XP anymore, only when I need WMP10 and fairuse4wm.

If the whole world could use Linux then Windows wouldn’t be so dominant, and I could actually understand why I need to type “sudo” for basic installation stuff and access repositories just to install firefox 3…

    Linux is complicated…
Macs are cool, but I would never game or do actual work on them.
XP was king, but it’s been 7 years.
Get a decent computer and use Vista

@tubby: When you need a brand new computer with top CPU, GFX-card, RAM etc to make Vista run as fast as XP on a standard machine, there seems to be no point in switching OS. If you install XP on a Vista machine, it’ll run MUCH faster. I just managed to install XP on my father-in-law’s Dell XPS - and now it FLIES compared to the Vista install.

    Maybe it’s just me then…?
But vista *flies* on my Inspiron 530, which is hardly top of the range. I did upgrade the RAM from 1GB to 2GB (and now to 3GB) each 1GB costs around £12.

I have a E6550 2.33ghz. But I do understand what you mean about say computers 2 years ago or ones with budget parts. My dad’s which had a e4300 1.8ghz was struggling a fair but so I installed 1GB of ram and bought and installed XP Pro oem.

The moral of the story…don’t buy a new OS (I raise my eyes at £120 for a retail copy of vista), just use the one preinstalled on your computer, and please, please buy a decent specced machine.
No celerons, turions, or even pentium dual-core (are they any good btw?)

Vista is not bad as some people keep claiming it to be. I was skeptical to switch to Vista, but after I did, I don’t use XP anymore. And don’t complain Vista is slow because you have a five year old computer with 1Gb of RAM.

The real problem is, people do not like change.

If Windows 7 isn’t a major success it could be a major turning point in Microsoft’s domination of the PC market. I mean two epic fails in a row could spell disaster even for a giant like Microsoft.

@5 You can easily squeeze out at LEAST a 30%++ performance boost using XP over vista on the same machine.
Grab Style XP or Windowblinds if you want XP to look like Vista, of if all you care about is style over function grab a mac.

When my PC Crashed and my XP had already been used two times
I got a new PC (High performance 5.0 average) with Vista
You know first I thought o no not Vista as I did try it on my
old PC in the past and it worked like crap then….but now
when I’ve been using Vista on this new PC and with the updated
Service pack….I must say that now I would not go back to
using XP again as Vista work pretty good now.
But—I must state that it is bad that you have to have such
a High performance Computer to be able to run Vista.

I had my thought on other OS as well but games has been the
the thing that kept me going with Windows…still.

Also when one get all programs running on Vista (Right
Drivers) for older programs then it works fine as well…

There really are some nice things in Vista that I did not
see before….but thats only because my New computer are
able to run vista…..and I got Vista together with the
price as I bought this New PC and this why I got into
using Vista + that my XP had Expired as I already used
it on two machines before this one….as XP has its two
time machine limit -BAD- I know there are things to unlock
it but now when I’ve been using Vista XP feel old and
out dated to me….and no please do not get me wrong
XP is a good OS as I used it for years.
I’m only saying that Vista works for me now as I have a PC
that it work on…..and yes as I said it is bad that older
Computers can’t run Vista and yea some stuff still need
some Improvement in Vista….but has not all more or less
Windows versions became better with time……I think
Microsoft should take a lot more time before releasing
a New OS and instead work on Vista to make it even better.
Besides as I heard the New Windows 7 will be Online based
So if you think Vista are Bloat….7 will be worse I believe
I also heard that Microsoft had gone togheter with others
agains piracy…..that freak me out a bit if its true
I mean what will they do then?? if that goes through
and if its true then I’ll change OS….as come on they have
no right touching my Hard drives do they??
It would be like going into someones home without asking.

Please forgive my spelling or gramar….Not to great with
    the English.

If they do get the 7 out there I hope they keep the suport
for Vista as long as they did for XP as damn I can’t afford
another upgrade after my last PC Crash.
Plus I do not feel like going through another Drivers
changing….now when I finaly got Vista to work for me.

And Thank You To all of you here at RealeaseLog for a
wonderful work on the updated info….You know I come here
everyday to to see if there are any news as the info very
interesting and hard to find anywhere else.

Yep, I agree, but also disagree. There are some particular problems with Vista. The most problems are with compatibility. Vista just overcame the present needs. They deleted important ports and compatibilities for older computers and programs and people are therefore judging it with a real hard words. Some of the words are unfortunately true and it really bad. Bud Vista has also many new features. I like mostly the easy search and solving feature added everywhere in windows. The help is also pretty good, it helps solve almost every problem and you can be contacted by other users. And also many other smooth-making features which make the Vista having better UI than XP. I don’t compare these two systems. It’s just that some of these possibilities are missing in XP and others are missing in Vista. Making something between Vista and XP would help other people accept this OS, but it would also slow down the research and I am for research and more and more features which won’t work with all PCs, but will make my work easier and UI better.

Sorry for the mistakes. I ain’t a native speaker.

Xp was a leap from windows 2000 ,but vista is just a better GUI.
I really hope that windows 7 will be more smart engineered.

    At #22

I tried style xp (and windowsblinds is actually commerical software which you’re supposed to buy… which I’m not going to when vista has it natively…) and it’s actually quite scary the stability issues it caused for me on XP professional - it’s not so much I want it to look like Vista, I sort of want it to be Vista, natively. It really is a nice OS, sure it’s not barebones and light, and you can’t uninstall WMP11 & install WMP10, and DX10 is junk for performance. But most people, aka the general public want something which is visually intuitive and starting with XP and now with Vista I think computers are truly useable for everyone.
Mac is not style over function, there are just too many compatibility options with a Mac and lack of vendors and the whole apple lock in which I am against.

Do not try and make windows xp look like vista, you’re just taking resources away from the base OS. Vista has all the visual effects built in natively and that’s why it will always run smoother than XP with mods.

The one thing Vista completely sucks on though is the copy manager, I use teracopy and have been for over a year now. Windows XP’s isn’t that great either, I installed teracopy in XP as well.

Vista is total utter pants - the biggest corporate suicide note in history, and anyone who says it’s better simply doesn’t know what they’re talking about (or has a stupidly specced up computer); upgrading Vista laptops to XP is now so common in IT stores both for personal and business uses it’s no longer even funny - the performance improvements for XP are spectacular (at the small price of a bit of superfluous eye candy and minor security features)

Microsoft know that Vista is a disaster, but there’s no way they can admit to it and are therefore rushing Windows 7 and extending XP - makes sense

I mean I use and like vista so biased I may be. But let’s state the obvious here:
All new PC’s ship with vista, so choice-wise you’re limited.
Microsoft are the ones who make XP, they can choke supply at any time.

A good dual core processor coupled with 2GB of ram is not specced up *these days*, it’s an industry standard which all major vendors are selling.
Anything less is like what my local computer store sells, over-priced pentium dual-core machines with 1GB ram with the perfunctory incorrect advice that vista is not a good performer. Oh and most corporations don’t run XP or Vista, they usually run the server editions or use dedicated OS’s like solaris and other UNIX type OS’s. So it’s not quite corporate suicide, Microsoft own the consumer sector and they’ve already been paid for the OEM licenses.

And say you’re right…then the poor guy who doesn’t know much about computers listens to the computer shop guy and ends up paying for a Windows XP license…which gives yet more money to Microsoft.

    They win…lol

Why should it take four minutes to “calculate remaining time…” to delete a fricken 9kb shortcut from the desktop?

try rename a shortcut from the start menu. How many times does it have to bloody ask “are you sure you want to do this”?

In trying to “simplify things”, they’ve made everything convoluted. It was easy enough to do what you wanted to in xp.

Vista is a poor poor operating system. The people who claim it’s not, I’m guessing are web-and-email-only users. And good for them.

Vista is not a bad OS itself, its just unnecessary. You know people dont like change, but when you get used to it the gui is actually kinda nice.

Offcourse it is slower than xp, uses twice as much memory even if you turn aero and everything off, older apps and games designed for xp dont work, the uac fails, copy a file to another destination is slower, not to mention the bugs.

Okay, Vista is a bad OS indeed. And i have 2gig ram and a high end c2d, it doesnt run slow, but xp is just much faster, especially with SP3. But thats just my experience.

But i only use Windows when i cant run it under the best os in teh world, OSX ^_^

Everyone going on about vista users are just web users, and its junk and broke need to actually try it. I have it, I run a semi-professional studio of it, not to mention loads of gaming. I can run Crysis on very high with a FPS of about 25fps. Just stop crying, most of us here dont even buy a OS, I will download the next one once it is also secure if it has benifits over Vista. XP is old now, Vista is here, just get over it.

As for mac users, yeah you are so cool, macs are so amazing, I mean, they do so little so well, no gaming, no product choice, over priced hardware, awesome stuff. Gladd it works, but I will stick to my sub-500 monster thanks, it also “just works”. Idiots.

Making programs to run smoothly on Vista is a pain in the… To quote Alexander Noé, maker of AVI-Mux GUI:

“I got word that AVI-Mux GUI works on Vista only when using the XP compatibility mode. Considering that the main reason for Vista is more Digital Restrictions Management, I do not plan to install Vista, and even less do I plan to look into this issue. I wouldn’t even look into this if it didn’t run on Vista at all.”

I tri-boot XP, OS X 10.5.4 and Vista 64. I only added Vista a month ago (SP1 level). Guess what? I pretty much only use Vista now. It’s rock solid, fast and my games work great. If you have a junky old PC, set it to classic (XP/2000) graphics… or buy a new machine, what are you waiting for?

What are all the Vista complaints about? No problems here.

  40. tubby
    October 6th, 2008 | 19:00

People who back up their own familiar software are not stupid, no-one would use vista if it was so truly awful. I just use it, just like I used to use Windows XP, and before that I used Windows 98.

Vista is a professional product which has taken millions if not billions of dollars to make. And strangely enough…new software sometimes needs new hardware, we can’t all expect everything to run so good at 1GB anymore.

Linux probably can, Windows XP gets by on 512MB but Vista needs 2GB for smooth performance.

Vista isn’t revolutionary like XP was, but it’s a better product (at least now in 2008 post sp1), XP may be faster for the time being (I have no idea what faster means quantitively here, I game with Vista and word process, video encode, itunes encode, transcode that sort of thing and it’s the same as SP3 imo - vista nor windows xp isn’t a workstation powerhouse of an OS)
And the performance to me feels really, really excellent. Firefox pops up immediately, roxio is quick to burn, wmp11 is nippy, and teracopy makes life alot easier than the default copy handler.
I never use the switch between windows features, but it’s cool to show off sometimes. But the thumbail preview thing for each seperate window is really, really sweet (especially when playing back High-def, just to test the CPU/GPU)

Now the 64-bit editions I’ve heard use completely different drivers and so I wouldn’t think is suitable for the average consumer.

how many of the people bad mouthing vista have actually used it & how many are going on what some one else has said i upgraded to vista after requiring dx10 which for idiots is only supported properly by vista. Yes vista is a bit bloated on boot up but you do have control to turn off all unwanted things, Vista is more reliable & more stable then xp has ever been. I leave my pc on 24/7 & only turn it off when i have to add hardware & i have never seen a blue screen of death on vista which i was often frequented with on xp

    @ron.

friends pc rig performed 21~37% faster on xp than vista on 9 different benchmarks THAT WERE MEANT FOR BOTH XP AND VISTA USE!

and its not some sucky prepackage pc, intel 7300 processor, 4 gigs of 1 GHZ ram, 2x XFX’s 8800 GT(X)512mb each.

    October 6th, 2008 | 19:42

It’s true that Vista requires a higher spec PC than XP. Its also true that when Vista first came on the scene, it had usability issues because of its “over the top” security (which were addressed to my satisfaction in SP 1)…..however it is also fair to say that when XP first came out, it would have run slowly on machines that were a few years old. Indeed, I have just upgraded some machines that belong to my parents and came with XP and 256mb ram. Needless to say they have always provided poor performance ( + 1GB now they fly). Personally, I use Vista (home premium) at home for its excellent Media Center and Direct X 10 support for gaming on a machine that cost me £700 to build 6 months ago. I use XP at work (I’m a Systems Analyst). Both machines are able to perform the task required of them at a reasonable speed, but for home use, I certainly believe that the security benfits of Vista over XP combined with DX 10 support and the (in some ways) improved interface make it a bargain for just over £50. I can appreciate both sides of the argument though and think that, when deciding if you should upgrade, the answer like many things in IT is…..IT DEPENDS!

Windows ME replaced win98. Windows ME sucked really bad when it came out. Windows XP changed all that because it was really great, not just great looking. Vista is MS trying to make up sales since everyone has XP already. It’s superior to XP, just takes longer to do the same thing, 4 clicks instead of 1. Oh but it’s is prettier.

    Windows ME did suck…

But people…don’t go and buy OSes, use the one preinstalled, chances are if the time has come for you to update your OS…your PC probably needs updating too, so just get a new PC every 4 or 5 years.

Vista Premium has been delightful to use on my Dell Inspiron, but that’s because Dell is a major vendor and had access to all vista compliant drivers and software before smaller places. If you were building yourself, vista drivers were probably a nightmare.

But today as of 2008, Vista is the OS to be using, it’s not stupid to stick with XP and it’s not stupid to go with Vista. Go with the one you feel is *faster* for you. I have a blistering experience with Vista and feel no need to use my dual-boot XP anymore - it feels old now that I’m so used to Vista.

I’m starting to think that maybe some users of Windows XP (a small minority perhaps, but still very vocal…) are luddites.

I always thought that big corporations, even Microsoft deserved some credit if their product works, and works really well.
But apparently because it can’t completely demolish another well-made 7 year old, mature product by the same company, Vista…is for kids…Lol, wow.

Vista really does work excellently for me, I’m sorry if it doesn’t work for you.

If vista is for the new generation
and xp is for the old generation…then
    roll on vista.

Been using vista for a while. its all about the hardware, im a graphic designer, and home computer runs like a dream but work computer is slow and crashes LOADS. its trial and error with the decent drivers.

but tbh, use a decent os. xp was OK, still crashes loads etc. Never had a problem with OSX - im a graphic designer so yes i use both.

Vista is a bad OS because it complicated the things instead of making them easier, talking about computer resource management. And the thing about OS is that they have to be simple and efficient, which vista is not. It may be more secure than windows xp when it comes out-of-box but who says that you cannot install a proper firewall in xp if you want security?

  57. Jon
    October 6th, 2008 | 23:14

    @56
Not sure what you are talking about. Nothing is more complicated in Vista. I don’t even think you’ve used it with such rubbish like that.

I am forced to use Windows XP at work and actually enjoy it when I come home and use Vista.

    @Jon [57]
Are you trying to contradict with the fact that vista is inefficient in the matter of system resources?

@58: I could say exactly the same thing, but in reverse: had problems with vista (it’s true that I never really worked on SP1 to figure if they got rid of them) and none with XP.

I’m currently running windows server 2008 on my (really) crappy laptop after a few tweaks here and there it runs fast probably faster then a normal XP not a tweaked XP
Tweaked XPs can be faster then hell

For all of those that say that vista kernel is crap it isnt ,and server2008 is the prof that good things can be done based on that kernel

I cant imagine that crappy laptop running Vista has fast as server2008 doe, disabling all the themes and aerocrap would probably help alot but still dont think that it would be faster

compatibility issue do exist in server2008 like in vista

The thing i dont really like about vista is the settings and stuff, they should be like in XP but it looks like they hidden some stuff so that n00bs wouldnt screw things up that should be fine in the home edition for your everyday dumbass but at least the ultimate should have these things more in the open….

    people who bash vista either:

    a) havent used it
    b) tried using it on a machine that cant hack it

stop whining. If you have a good machine, vista works fine

for example i have 4 gigs of ram and vista has never caused me any issues, is NOT slow, and in fact, beats the crap out of XP

people just need to grow up, stop whining, and bring their computer specs into the CURRENT generation. live in the past all you want, but people who whine about vista dont know what they are talking about. grow up.

Vista not that bad i had for 2 years.
you need lots of rams i had 3 gigs and
    512 meg video card.
    It loads faster

  68. James
    October 7th, 2008 | 05:57

Vista is terrible. Also, people who know about computers stay away from Vista not the other way around. An OS shouldn’t need better specs. The OS should be small, fast and well written tight code. When people can still write an OS that fits on a 3.5” floppy, that says something.

Don’t pretend to know about computers and say how wonderful Vista is. It’s bloated, performs like it’s written in Java, and is just terrible to look at.

I think the most important comparison between xp and vista is performance benchmarks. Everything I have read says that high end machines running xp will outperform the equivalent machine running vista. Many features of vista can be added with third party software to xp. At some point in time software may be released that utilises 64bit processes properly, needs more than 4 gigs of ram and directx 10. Under those circumstances clearly vista will have an edge but I doubt this day will arrive before windows 7. I don’t understand why people seem to take this debate so personally.

I was a die-hard xp user until a few weeks ago. i upgraded my machine and the new one came with vista. i had planned on getting xp and installing. but the more i use vista, the more i like it. never really had any speed issues. i mostly use for video encoding, and i only have 1 gig ram so far. I leave it running for days and no real slow down. i like the look of windows classic better so i changed all the bells and whistles to windows classic look. even xp was too distracting for me. I like stability over speed and style, and vista sure is stable. bottom line: different strokes for different folks.

I Have a Hewlitt packard I bought refurbished for $499 with intel quad-core and windows vista. I added a nvidia 8800GTS OC $180, a 550 watt power supply $80,cpu cooler $25 and just finished playing Crysis Warhead at 720p fullscreen with Vsync turned on and all settings set to “Enthusiast” (the highest settings) and the game ran flawless and smoothly, great graphics btw. I didn’t us anti aliasing or go above 720p definition but I don’t find either one does a lot for my 1080p Toshiba @ “42. If vista is so bad my $760 comp must be one helluva super computer.

Mr Jibblies, instead of enabling vsync in game(which i used to do) download rivatuner and run the D3DOverrider in the tools folder.
It enables vsync and triple buffering in all your games (crysis & crysis warhead included). You will get a frame rate bump, I used to enable vsync in game and without triple buffering enabled (which some games don’t have the option for…) you get a major frame rate hit.
I just have an 8800GT512MB. If it doesn’t work then no worries, just though it might.

Hopefully windows 7 is less resource intensive. They should just remove all that Aero nonsense and give a more Linux look. By right the new OS should have a lower system requirement than Vista but retaining all the stability it had, like a Vista-lite or sumthing.

umm vista u get dx10… someone or a few ppls

said dx 10 is crap.. odd xp use’s dx9, and ps3

and Xbox360 use umm dx9.5 ( yes its not 10 and

not 9) umm so if u hate vista and vista doesnt

have jack. I hope u dont have a ps3 or xbox

360 cause my computer looks better playing the

same titles then ur $600 console. and for ppls

saying u need over the edge hardware or it was

a scheme for u to upgrade. Let me pose this

qustion, is ur cpu 64bit rdy? do u have a

64bit os? DIDnt think so, so why did u upgrade?

ya i thought so too.. i have been using the

“nope version of vista 32x ult for well just

about release, and xp… So i cant update xp
    \
to sp3 and i paid for it, just keeps failing..

get blue screens some times… sure i can

reinstall but ive done that for YEARS.

Vista, no blue screens, have had problems

running older programs in the past like bf2

but that seems fixed now as i have been

putting hrs back into it. Oh i have real dx10,

not some trying/praying for dx10 for xp.. Have

y seen all the ppls trying to get it to work or

better yet the CRYSIS dx10 hack for xp LMAO.

Shows u dont know what dx10 can do.

last thing, i wont be going to W7 cause there

rushing it, and loads of ppls said vista sucks

cause it was rushed. But W7 will take

advantage of Touch screens. so i will wait for

the market to flood with Touchscreens then BUY

    one

There is no reason to pay for a separate license of Vista. If it came with your new computer that’s fine, it’ll probably run fine. As it is I own 5 legit licenses to XP and I cant think of changing away from XP to an OS that will bog my hardware anymore than XP will. I mean I’ve even made the step to Kubuntu or Xubuntu just to speed up browsing. But sadly I’m going to be cornered into buying a new Windows version. Because if you plan on gaming you have to run Windows and once XP stops getting updates I’ll be herded towards a new OS. Which is fine except I’ll have to replace the 7 computers in my house cus the hardware couldn’t handle it…

  81. saiyani

I think that those who say vista is better than XP are paid by Microsoft…(friends know why)
No one use it especially the big firms…that says a lot.
