Think I might be able to help a bit with that Kale…

While what we are downloading here are indeed NOT true HD movies, think of them of the DivX equivilent to DVDs. So what DivX is to a movie on DVD disks, then .mkv HD is to a movie on BluRay disks.

Basically HD movies are digital files of films that are mastered in a much higher screen size. Normal DVD movies are about 720 x 480 pixel and HD movies are about 1920×1080 or 1920×800 depending on the widescreen aspect that the movie is shot in. The 720p files are a scaled down version of the HD 1080 size. Something like 1280×720, again depending on the aspect it was shot in, and this presents a nice middle ground and can easily compressed and fit onto a standard blank DVD. Some HD movies here are compressed at a higher quality, and intended for a dual layer disk that can hold 8 gigs of information. Some HD rips ( 9 gigs and higher ) were never intended to be stored on a consumer blank disk and are archived on your computers hard drive.

HD movies are the answer to all those new LCD and Plasma sets that we are now buying. On our old 27″ Sony Trinitrons, DVDs looked great because those sets were 720×480. But when you watch a DVD on a 1920×1080 set, the image falls apart, hence the need for movies to be mastered in a much higher frame size.

I’ve had the 720p version for a few weeks now. Looks absolutely amazing. My rig is a bit slow to handle 1080p but I’m sure that one would look great.

Hard to believe there was no film shot for this movie, it was shot all digital. Rather inspiring if ya ask me.

If you like this, check out Frank Miller’s The Spirit coming out this christmas. Looks just as good.

And this is where the movie industry fails. I have been waiting for this Blu-ray and want to buy it. But it is not available yet. So should I wait some more until it is or treat myself on this version?

@20, both versions are fine, its down to taste. If you want a long flowing film then the theatrical version does the job, if you’re a fan of the books you might prefer to watch each story told seperately as they are even closer to the books than the theatrical version, due to the extended stories
