will be glad to see this. Watched an interview with Michael moore on Oprah (shutup! she’s good sometimes!) … it looks to be a very big ‘wake up call’ kind of movie for people who have health insurance in US and think it’s good … even though its probably not.

I’m Canadian, so i don’t really care … but i like to have info to pick on my US friends with. lol

I generally hate the guy, he twists the facts, but what I do respect about him is that everything he says actually is derived from fact. Most other people on the other far side of the spectrum can’t say that.

  13. Boo
    June 13th, 2007 | 06:02

I don’t know… After reading two of his books, seeing two of his movies, and watching his countless appearances on various talk shows (Jon Stewart, etc), I can’t say I like this guy at all. Moore, in my opinion, is an ignorant buffoon at best or a hypocritical son of a bitch (if any these accusations of intentionally stretching the facts are true) at worst. Whatever he is, people like Moore is one of the main reasons the word liberal has such a negative flavor in today’s political culture. As with those “America/Microsoft/Google/Linux/Muslims/French/Sony sucks!” comments often seen around the Web, one looses all his credibility when one conjures up an unfounded generalization and turns it into a completely pointless assault.

Hey, hypocrites are just geniuses who are too smart to take their own advice.

Moore’s films I by-and-large like. “Roger & Me” made me a bit uneasy, and F9/11 felt like pandering, but at the least, they get you emotionally charged about important issues, and anything that encourages debate is a good thing.

First ten minutes have been good – let’s see how the rest of the film goes…

I think any of MM’s movies are a one sided joke. This guy thinks Cuba has a better health care system then the United States. The scary part is I believe he really believes that, and not just saying it for hype. But if you enjoy his films, I hope you enjoy this. I did find the piece he did on General Motors several years ago interesting. However, IMHO, I think he has become too leftist after the “Bowling for Comumbine”.

Well, that’s the point. I can’t really comment on the Columbine incident, but his political views and accusations are often misleading and have nothing to do with truth. There is a book (written by a democrat) called Fifty-nine Deceits in Fahrenheit 911. People who’ve actually read it (I didn’t even bother) say that the amount and severity of discrepancies in Moore’s infamous documentary are truly staggering.

Also, Erok, I don’t really think that he’s just an guy who has a lot of beliefs in not that much of a brain. Moore, in many respects, perfectly fits the profile of a rich and powerful “stupid white man” he often targets in his criticisms. I think there may a good chance he’s doing all this largely for money and publicity and not for his love of the country. Of course, I don’t know him that well to be sure in the validity of my speculations.

Do you actually know anything about Cuban health care system or what ? Have you ever read anything on Cuba or are you just the typical american guy/girl who doesn’t know anything about Cuba but is keen to say everything bad about them and Fidel ? Jesus, I would like to inform you that Cuba has indeed one of the BEST health care systems – if not the best – on the whole World. And that is a known fact, studied and documented in scientific news/mags etc. Cuba has some of the best doctors in the world as well. Lot’s of representatives from around the world visit Cuba to see how their health care works and immitate it. It’s also a known fact that Cuba has associations with other nations (mainly with latin american nations) to provide health care for them. Cuba has indeed THE best health care system in the world.
Learn some things about the Cuban health care system and then talk about it and compare it with the american.

and btw, i am no Cuban, i am greek.

i really don´t get it, in austria you have to be health insured by the company you work at. simply as that, if you don´t have work the goverment pays your health care .. if your company doesn´t pay it gets sued over and over again by the goverment ! (and is taken out of business imediatly)

if you need treatment or surgery its fully covered, the only thing you actually have to pay is 5 euro for every prescription, 25 if an ambulance comes and bringes you to hospital and if you want a high class room at the hospital (alone, with tv etc) you have to pay some bucks .. if you can take it you have to share a tv with 3 people you don´t pay shit

what the fuck is up with america ? how can it be that there are people WITHOUT insurance ?!?! omfg what a fucked up system ;)

Comparing Cuban health care system to the one in America doesn’t really bring up that much of a perspective. The U.S. has one of the worst health care systems in the world, with probably only some of the third-world countries ranking lower than us. As for the Cuba’s system, while I didn’t expect it to be that advanced (sadly, I’m not what one would possibly call a Cuban expert), socialistic countries should generally have better distribution of medical coverage due to their fundamental ideological principles. I still doubt it is the best system on the planet, considering that the country’s overall economic situation has to have a negative effect on their health care policies

America has the best health care in the world bar none. The problem is you have to pay for it. It’s the system, not the service, that’s at fault. You need to make that distinction.

Cuba on the other hand has a great health system, but the care itself perhaps not so. Their equipment, facilities, and medicine is leagues behind. I’ve been in a Cuban hospital and seen it.

In other words, if you have a serious ailment, in the USA, you’re bankrupted, in many other countries, such as the UK, and of course, Cuba, chances are you’re dead.

I’m American, but have lived overseas.

The American healthcare system SUCKS. There are good doctors, and there is good technology, but the way the business is run is fucking idiotic.

We have poor people dying in waiting rooms and rich people getting immediate care for plastic surgery.

  62. blunden
    June 13th, 2007 | 14:56

richard: That is so not true. America may very well have better medical equipment than Cuba, I don’t doubt that. But to say that you have better equipment and care than other countries where the health care is funded by fully by taxes is just plain wrong. You may have better than some, but definitely not all. It’s probably stems from the same misconsception that the US have the most advanced technologi in the world too.

There’s a difference between the U.S. having one of the worst health care systems in the world and the U.S. having ones of the worst hospitals, personnel, or medical equipment in the world. The former is true, the latter is completely false. I’ve been in NY Presbyterian Cornell Hospital on many occasions (one time being treated for emergency without having any medical insurance), and I assure you, not that many countries have better hospitals than this. Also, poor people dying in the waiting room is a severe exaggeration. There are all things of medical coverage programs that cover emergency hospital visits for not only for Americans but for non-citizens as well.

Oh, and blunded, the U.S. is still one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world. This may change within the next decade or so, but today it’s.. how do I put it.. ‘misconceptive’ to say or think otherwise.

In The USA the poor get free health care and the Rich get the best health care they can afford. It’s the working class that gets screwed and bankrupted. Meanwhile large companies complain about the cost of providing insurance for their workers while they make Billions each qtr. The quality of care is great in the US but the fact that it is so profit driven is what is screwed up. Let us not forget that even illegal immigrants here in Texas get free health care no questions asked.

Blunden, there is no such a thing as “the most technologically advanced country” in today’s world. U.S., Sweden, Japan, Finland, South Korea, and other technologically sophisticated countries all have both strong and week moments in their scientific and industrial development. The U.S. has been dominating this position for years, but now it gradually loses its competitive ability, thanks to its seriously dysfunctional primary and secondary education systems (our higher education is in a much better shape comparing to those two). But even with in its current condition, the U.S. is in many respects technologically superior over to the vast majority of other world’s nations. It’s just not something we should be bragging about.

Exellent movie , what more can you expect from Mr Moore. Hes a shining light of the freedom to express ones self. Once again highlighting a problem all over the world, the need for basic and fundermental health care to all human beings, be you rich , middle or poor class. No human can do more than help another out. My hat goes of to all those people in the world that help others and care for their ills.

Too all you obviously 15 and 16 year old political experts out there who love to bash thing you know absolutly nothing about, this is for you.

I am an American. I love my people and my country. My country, like yours and this means any country, is run by the very few people with money and power. What this means is that not you or I or anyone really has any say in how things really work.

Politicians are a seperate class like the preisthood who now exsist only to further their own aims and the aims of those who support them.

The shamefull medical system in the US is a product of pure capitalist greed, supported by those in power and not the product of some socially responsible individuals who would love to do for the greater good.

I have lived for a long time and seen much of this world, so before you start bashing a people like Americans, please realize that THERE BUT FOR THE GRACE OF GOD, GO YOU!

BTW, lets not forget about the centuries of Feudalistic Monarchism and Facism that basiclly enveloped Europup until the birth of this latest generation.

A little open minded discourse is always good for what ails you!

Actually, politicians is not exactly a separate and independent class of Americans but a direct byproduct of the American society. National embarrassments, like that Bridge to Nowhere Alaskan earmark project (google it up) would not have existed if the good people of the United States had taken their civic responsibilities with a little bit more seriousness and selflessness. As for the criticism of the medical and educational system, I also think that implementing radical policy changes is much easier in such small (and, thus, more organized) countries like Denmark or Switzerland than it is in an aging mammoth that is the United States. Still, I strongly feel that inaction is the worst possible way of dealing with these problems.

Its funny to read all the Americans that stand up for Bush saying that Michael Moore is a liar and he made it up! Well folks its soooo not true! I saw Bush reading a f*#**ing goat story to the kids for a long time after the tower fell! So give me a break!

As for this movie, as Americans, you should be kissing his feet! Your health care sucks!!! And even though Canada’s health care isn’t so great, at least it is certainly better than yours! Get an education and watch the movie! He has grown as a filmaker and it is not like the other two films. He is trying to show you what health care is like for the rescuers from 9/11, should they get totally shafted because the gov’s health care plan is crappy? After what they did? That is just disgusting!

Boo, While I would love to agree with you, in MHO it has gotten to the point in America and elsewhere that “politics” has become theater, and by this I mean that the implied concept of a “liberal” or “conservative” dual party system is an falacy perpetrated on the American public asnd likely elsewhere as well to give you the illusion of some cocntrol over your own and your countries destiny. Truth be told, in this system each “party” or “politician” truly serves the same masters, those that paved the way for their election. Dem. Rep. it truly does not matter.

Due to this, civic responsibality and the ability to effect political outcome is the greates illision of all.

BTW “Politician” is most definitly one of the higher “castes” in the world today as they are the one who benifit most from this system. It has become the “nobility” of today and do not for a second think otherwise.

Sunspot420, I don’t really see politicians benefiting from the system in a way you suggest. What I see is the completely dysfunctional House that is driven by each State’s personal and egoistic needs that are being channeled trough the States’ representatives. Senate seems to show more sense, but it’s completely powerless without support from either the House of Representative or the White House. The executive branch is largely free of internal disputes that tend to paralyze the Congress, but with our current president… Basically, you get the picture. One more point I’d like to make is that castes and hereditary titles. Congressmen, Senators, and presidents are being elected by people. Just as I said in my previous post, the only way to ensure the future absence of idiots taking up the country’s leadership positions is for us to take our civic responsibilities with a little bit more seriousness and selflessness.

Amazing how people are duped so easily with massaged “facts” from a dictator and his socialistic totalitarian form of governance which prohibits free speech and suppresses unflatering speech. Any “facts” on Cuba’s health care system, including infant mortality and AIDS, are suspect since there is no, zero, zip, nada transparency to the Cuban government’s processes of which the health care is part of. Without transparancy there is no accountability, and corruption easily fills the void. Fidel’s “facts” have not and will not be verified by independent western entities.

A subsistence existence with electricity is still subsistence existence. I recommend any of you supportive of Castro and his health care system go an live in Cuba like the average man, without special favors extended to the touristas and corrupt hierarchy.

If you really want to know about what a taste of being a common man living in Cuba is actually like, see:

    http://www.therealcuba.com/Page10.htm

    and

    http://www.babalublog.com/archives/001470.html

There is no utopia, and socialism and Castro do not provide for real opportunity and advancement. Yeah, literacy is high but there’s nothing to be gained beyond your literacy that pulls you out of subsistence. Functional illiterates on welfare in the US fare better than the literate common man on or off subsidies in Cuba.

Well, there is also an official report on Cuban health care system, issued by a special Select Committee of the UK House of Commons. I consider it to be a source more trustworthy than these possibly propagandistic websites you mentioned.

    http://www.parliament.the-stationery-office.co.uk/pa/cm200001/cmselect/cmhealth/30/3007.htm

“In October 2000 we undertook a visit to Cuba as part of our inquiry. We chose to visit Cuba since it achieves excellent health outcomes despite the fact that its resources are very limited.

We witnessed a radically different model of health care in Cuba… Cuba manages to achieve rates of mortality and morbidity which are close to those of First World Countries spending vastly more on health care. Life expectancy is currently 76 years at birth, and we were frequently told that Cuba was “a Third World Country whose inhabitants die from First World Diseases”. On our visit to Cuba we saw a number of different factors which underlie the success of the Cuban health care system.

Every patient is obliged to attend their consultario at least twice a year. We were told that babies were examined daily during the first six months of life. Extremely high levels of immunisation were recorded. In the absence of expensive imported pharmaceutical products, considerable emphasis is placed on herbal and other alternative remedies. Every 10 to 15 family practices are supported by a polyclinic staffed by specialists in areas such as paediatrics, gynaecology and psychiatry. The presence of the polyclinics limits the numbers of patients referred to hospital and generally allows for treatment to take place close to the patient’s home. Patients are heavily involved in decision making at every level. Cuban society also places great emphasis on the role of exercise. The Cuban Health Ministry and Health Committee are also responsible for sport.

There are clearly huge disparities between the UK and Cuban social systems. The Cuban system has elements of compulsion that would not be accepted in the UK. The prevalence of Cuban doctors allows a doctor patient ratio of 1:175 (compared with 1:600 in the UK). We believe that there are lessons to be learned from the Cuban model for public health in the UK and we note that the Department of Health has itself financed an ongoing study of the Cuban healthcare system.[21] The Cuban primary care system is extremely responsive to the needs of its community; patients are far more directly involved in their own health and well being; moreover prevention is prioritised over cure.”

    Mr.Wanka..
Noone said it was a utopia!!
With respect m8, having looked at your links(thanks for that)I got the feeling that some of the points made had also”been massaged” to support their own sentiments…ex cubans now living in the US are generally anti cuban and have their bias.
Whilst 3rd world Cuba is no utopia, cant you all see that even comparing the 2 countries’ healthcare systems, given their respective wealths and the US embargo on Cuba, seems like a mismatch, yet it is not…
The US should be light years ahead of them in every regard, esp. medicine and health..yet they clearly are not…

Well done Michael Moore, even though I am upset with how Michael Moore dealt with Ralph Nader and the election campaign, imho Sicko is his best work yet.
My wife has family living in the US and it always makes me laugh when they falsely believe that as Americans they have always have the best, largest, fastest, etc… Michael Moore’s movie is not about those poor American’s who do not have Health Insurance, but rather about those who do have Health Insurance.
It would seem to me that there is a flaw in logic when you trust a company which its main goal is to make profit, to care for the health of those who pay for the service. What comes first profit or health care, it would appear for at least those few people who went to Cuba, that their Insurance Co. profit is much more important than their health.
Knowing that many people will disagree with this movie or anything that Michael Moore and anyone who is ‘left’ (in the US it seems that anyone who is left of the Republicans, are Red), you can not argue the fact that so many other countries have Universal Health Care. Living in one of those many countries, I don’t know anyone who has been refused medical treatment, nor do I know of anyone waiting for emergency treatment.
    Again, well done Michael Moore.
