Short Circuit 1986 720p BluRay x264-SiNNERS

SiNNERS guys from HD scene, released today “Short Circuit” classic back from 80’s - in Hi-Def. I remember it from my childhood, but now I’ll have to watch it again in high definition to refresh my memories back. :-) Must admit that some parts/scenes of the movie looks pretty naive & silly nowadays, but back then, in 1986 that was their vision of technology & future. Anyway, if you are 80’s, SciFi and/or Steve Guttenberg fan - give it a try.

P.S. Number 5 looks similar to Wall-E, an upcoming movie. Coincidence or ripoff? :roll:

Plot: When a laser-armed Department of Defense robot named Number 5 gets zapped by a lightning bolt, he “malfunctions” and starts spouting peace slogans and developing a human-like consciousness. Naturally, the newly pacifist machine wants out of the military and escapes. As a frantic search for the creature begins, Number 5 settles down in his new home, with a gentle young woman named Stephanie (Ally Sheedy), who has every intention of holding on to her find, teaching Number 5 about popular culture and other mysteries of life. Thoroughly convinced that the robot is alive, she develops a strong bond with the creature. In order to prevent his capture by the military–who view Number 5 as an armed-and-dangerous weapon–the pair must convince his inventor, a reclusive scientist named Newton Crosby (Steve Guttenberg), that he is truly alive and more than just a metal machine.

    Talkin about coincidence Christian! I just seen the Wall-E page at imdb the other day and i was thinking it was the 3rd version of this film which turns out… it isnt! lol Wall-E tho looks like a cross between Johnny 5 and ET, perhaps both of them got together because were both pretty big during the 80s and give birth to Wall-E?! lol

    Short circuit tho, brings back good memories of my youth, seen it on tv like 2 months ago but im really considering getting this to have it in my collection!

    Wall-E (the character) it’s designs are most likely inspired by J5 or Number Johnny 5 or however you want to call him :P
    Also I’ve heard something about a third Short Circuit movie? should be on IMDb too

    its not a coincidence, the pixar guys are no idiots, this is is a classic movie, and its not a rip off, its not like they copy the story and pretend its their own. the fact that wallee looks like number 5 and seems to be just as clumsy is clearly a tribute. if you want to look for a rip off, look at “stealth”…

    If i’m reading you right, you know that ordinary 35mm film stock has a resolution higher than 1920×1080 so when it’s transferred to blu-ray or just dumped to a hard drive the quality will be the same or possibly better than a movie shot on dedicated hidef cams this year.

    Casablanca from 1942 is available in 1080p.

    As to “how can they claim it is Blu-Ray when Blu-Ray” well blu-ray is just a standards group idea for hidef, exactly the same as HD-DVD for resolution.

    @ 27: most movies shot on 35mm cameras can be remastered and DOWNscaled to bluray resolution and quality.

    All the old movies (and new) are shot at a much higher resolution then what you see in the cinemas and on DVD, or Bluray.

    For example like 4000×4000, etc.

    Also @ all the BluRay talk..

    This is a Blu Ray rip because the movie was made onto a Blu Ray disk by the fricken production company when Blu Ray came out.
    It doesn’t mean Blu Ray technology was supposed to be out in 1986… that’s dumb
    When movies are shot, they are done so on a much higher res (like 4 times higher than 1080)

    Film studios are now selling their movies in HD and Blue Ray. Don’t be fooled it’s all a scam. it’s better just to buy the regular version of the DVD.
    I’ve take numerous film classes and have digital video experience. Basically, 97% of all films are shot using film, 16mm, 8mm. 35mm. etc. And this film is a celluloid and it captures light to form the shapes, but it’s basically a thin film composed of cells.

    Film cannot be viewed in HD or Blue ray. it simply cannot, why? because HD and BR are based on pixels, tiny light emissions on the screen. Plasma or other LCD technology. So watching a film that was transferred from film, to HD cannot happen. You cannot ever, watch a film that was shot in cellular film..and watch it on HD or Blue Ray. Because they are different technologies. and they cannot match or relate to eachother. And actually transferring film to a computer destroys the original film image.

    Solution? well, George Lucas shot revenge of the sith with HD sony cameras. the first of films to be shot using high definition cameras. So when you have your HD TV and HD player, it will look as it was originally shot and intended to be seen.

    Studios will now be selling old films like Terminator, Die Hard, Aliens. And tell you that you are watching them on HD. And that is just not true, you are still watching a movie that was shot using original cell film.

    So is HD good or bad? it’s good..for television shows that are shot in HD and broadcasted in HD. Or future films that will be shot in that manner in the future. But the premise remains, Celluloid, film cannot be sold as High Definition. Most movies are still being shot using traditional film and therefore should be watched at the movie theater.

    It would be funny to see studios trying to sell movies or TV shows from the 40’s and 50’s and say that they are in “HD” or “Blue Ray”. They will still look very blurry and lacking color. So, the question is..will you still buy product that is advertised as true, but you know it to be false? And I know that I will never see a film like “The Empire Strikes Back” in true High Definition as it was NEVER Shot in HD.

    @38 is quite right, a lot of films were just shot badly or the original film stock is in poor condition or the camera used was not as good as a major studio would shoot with. the truth is a high quality projector will show films shot on film at the best quality possible and HD can only imitate this not improve it

    This was actually talked about by (as you mentioed before) George Lucas, he said that the quality of his films in the cinema/theatre looked worse because like VHS, copies of copies lose quality and therefore reduce the overall quality of the picture. The rest is correct tho! lol

    i have often wondered about HD quality. given identical source, shooting the same scene using both analog and digital, which one has the finer detail. if there was a cup in the scene that had text on it, which technique would let you read the text, the most clear.

    if HD is able to show the best detail then i would consider an analog transfer to HD, lossless. to test this you would have to use lenses to zoom in on the film. with digital source you could use a computer to zoom in and enhance the image. a great advantage over analog technique.

    So why do all my BluRay movies from the 80’s look absolutely incredible in 1080p? Have you ever even watched one? Since you are claiming the standard DVD is just as good, I doubt you even know what you are talking about.
    I’ve watched the DVD and BluRay to show people the difference, and even 70’s movies look like you are watching a brand new movie, you can see a piece of dust floating by in the background it’s so sharp. You cant even compare the two.
    And older movies look better on BluRay than anything broadcast on TV in high def.

    And oh yeah, ask your teacher what acadamy standard 35mm film roughly translates to in pixel size. It’s almost twice as much as 1080p.

    you’re saying that a 35mm movie shot in 1942
    before World War 2 and 60+ years in the store room
    “downscaled” to 1080p then burned onto a Blu-Ray disc

    is the same or has better picture quality
    as/than a movie shot with HD camera?

    I wouldn’t buy Casablanca on Blu-Ray DVD
    Would you?

    Casablanca’ is presented in 1080p/VC-1 video and appropriately pillarboxed to the film’s original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The black and white image is wonderful. The source material has been meticulously cleaned up, and good luck finding a speck of dirt, dropouts or inconsistencies in contrast or black levels. The film has a nice, deep and rich look, with excellent smoothness across the entire grayscale. Sharpness is perhaps slightly “soft” by today’s standards, but terrific for a film from 1942. I continue to marvel at how deep and detailed this film looks. Fine textures throughout are clearly visible —

    I could make out indentations on the spine of a book, or see slight creases in the clean whites of Humphrey Bogart’s tuxedo.

    I am also grateful Warner didn’t over-tweak this one — whites never bloom and at no point is the image overly contrasted in an effort to make the film look “newer” or “glossier.” Instead, ‘Casablanca’ maintains a very natural, film-like look throughout. Without a doubt this is the finest black and white transfer I’ve seen on high-def, period, and up there with the best remasters ever created for the home theater environment.

    I would like to say that Casablanca on BD will look better than the DVD version, due to less compression and downscaling. It’s like comparing a 1CD dvdrip with a 720p rls..

    Also, it’s Blu-Ray Disk(BD), not Blu-Ray DVD.

    Blu-Ray is a storage medium. Nothing is ’shot in Blu-Ray’. Think of VHS and DVD for the appropriate analogues. Clearly you don’t understand this or you wouldn’t have a problem understanding how a film shot in 1985 could be transferred to a medium that did not exist then.

    As for the person who has supposedly taken film classes and therefore is an expert this debate: have you never watched a DVD? Blu-Ray is no different except for a higher resolution (yes, yes, there are other, minor technical differences but none of them are important for this discussion). Your argument reminds me of those who to this day harp on about how much better vinyl is compared to CDs, or other digital media. HD does not in fact necessitate pixels either btw, think HD CRTs. Not that that matters.

    This is technically correct, I guess. It’s would be the same as saying “you can’t listen to vinyl on a CD”. No, but you certainly can master a CD from a analogue source.

    “Solution? well, George Lucas shot revenge of the sith with HD sony cameras. the first of films to be shot using high definition cameras. So when you have your HD TV and HD player, it will look as it was originally shot and intended to be seen.”

    The camera Lucas used was 1080p. A 1080p image will contain (way) less detail than a good 35mm print.

    Of course I’m watching them in HD. They were shot on film, then converted to a digital master with twice or four times the resolution of Blu-ray through a process called telecine. Then it was _downscaled_ to Blu-ray resolution.

    “So is HD good or bad? it’s good..for television shows that are shot in HD and broadcasted in HD. Or future films that will be shot in that manner in the future. But the premise remains, Celluloid, film cannot be sold as High Definition. Most movies are still being shot using traditional film and therefore should be watched at the movie theater.”

    Most new Hollywood films use a digital intermediate before hitting the theaters. The film is shot on celluloid, but then it’s telecined. The editing and color grading is done to digital video and then it’s printed to celluloid again. Which means you’re actually watching film that comes from a video source a lot of the time. You whole argument then makes no sense. If you had actually paid attention during your film classes, you would know this.

    “It would be funny to see studios trying to sell movies or TV shows from the 40’s and 50’s and say that they are in “HD” or “Blue Ray”. They will still look very blurry and lacking color. So, the question is..will you still buy product that is advertised as true, but you know it to be false? And I know that I will never see a film like “The Empire Strikes Back” in true High Definition as it was NEVER Shot in HD.”

    Blu-ray is a storage medium. HD refers to video with higher definition than regular broadcast or DVD. 35mm celluloid can hold more information than 1080p. I guess that means 35mm is “true” true High Definition.

    Full HD is 1920×1080. 2 Mpix.
    35 mm has billions of billions of billions cells. Every pixel is made of millions of them. If you got good analogue>digital converter, you can make even Ultra HD which is 7680×4320 (33 Mpix). You can make it even better, the same way as you see it in cinema. But no more :)

    About film: I liked it a decade ago. It’s nice. However, I don’t like the idea that pacifists are made by smiting one’s head.
