SF network hacker’s bail reduction denied

A judge on Wednesday refused to reduce the $5 million bail of a San Francisco technology expert accused of rigging the city’s computer system to malfunction during routine maintenance. Terry Childs has been jailed since July 13 on four felony counts of computer tampering. He is accused of creating secret passwords that gave him exclusive access to the city’s new multi-million-dollar computer network, which stores records such as officials’ e-mails, city payroll files, confidential law enforcement documents and jail bookings. Authorities said Childs initially refused to reveal correct passwords to them, but that he turned them over to Mayor Gavin Newsom during an unusual jailhouse visit Tuesday.

The city is still experiencing computer problems, said San Francisco Deputy District Attorney Conrad del Rosario. He told San Francisco Superior Court Judge Lucy McCabe that the Sheriff’s Department is “locked out” and that other city departments are having problems. Defense attorney Erin Crane said her client was the subject of a smear campaign by co-workers jealous of Childs’ computer savvy and work ethic. In arguing for reduced bail, Crane said in a motion that Childs was merely trying to protect the network after “co-workers and supervisors had in the past maliciously damaged the system themselves, hindered his ability to maintain it … and shown complete indifference to maintaining it themselves.” Crane also said Childs, 43, posed no danger to the public.

He had set free some hostages after talking to the San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom, apparantly the only person who he felt trustworthy giving the passwords to. The mayor was person finally responsible for the involved department. The Boss of the network Ron Vinson said: “Apparantly, Child thinks he owns the network. In fact, it is the loyal tax-payer who does”. ;)

Don’t bash so eagerly. America is far from flawless as far as government and politics go but as far as living here it’s a great place. Yes there are folks out there who get a bit carried away with patriotism but at least we have something to be proud of here in the states. People sometimes say something is as American as apple pie. Well that’s good because I for one like apple pie. And I love my god. And I respect your god. And I’ll be happy to have my chip underneath my skin b/c I hear it comes with xm radio and is bluetooth compatible. On the brighter side of things.. your right your not an American idiot. Your just a plain idiot. Practice saying this…. Touche.

Also i love wearing my mother’s underwear, matter of fact, i’m wearing her panties right now. They also got skidmarks on them, that’s why i love them.

You still dont seem to get it. This dweeb intentionally caused damage and knew what he was doing and what his actions would do, thus there is no judge or jury anywhere that is going to take it “easy” on him or let him off with a lite punishment. They are going to throw the book at him and deservedly so. You have social security numbers there as well as addresses so it is complete for identity theft, and in this country as well as Canada; identity theft is now a major felony. And how many workers are on this payroll? The reason I ask is each one of them is a possible different charge so he could be looking at possibly hundreds if not thousands of charges of this felony alone. Now you are looking at the cost to undo what he has done and now that comes into theft of taxpayer funds, and over a set amount that also become a felony. And you know darn well that he is going to be banned from ever being a systems IT guy again for any company or government (state or local) in the US. In short he will be blackballed as no one will touch him for employment in this field. He wont be allowed to leave the US as his skills are too dangerous, and I will even bet he wont be allowed to have a computer ever again or even use the public ones in the local library.

There are other ways he could have brought this to the attention of the higher ups without damaging innocent people, so what he did and what he is going to get is on his head and his head alone. Not to mention that only fools and stupid n00bs would think this is something great…as they usually do right up till they are arrested and then they are crying like the bi%$h they really are.

Your argument failed when you mentioned Canada. The day Canada adopts a felony based judicial system is the day I renounce my citizenship. But I guess you know all about mistakes now, as it’s plainly apparent you’re making them on purpose. Who tries to troll people without even having a well informed argument. At least you should go to grade school a few more times so you can learn some English grammar. That would do you wonders.

Whoops, well you had better start renouncing your citizenship n00b as they do in fact have a felony system and you would have known that if you would had bothered to check http://www.canadalegal.info/ref-canada-criminal-law/canada-criminal-law-courts.html
BEFORE opening your mouth to show your ignorance and complete stupidity of your opinion. That site above clearly shows that Canada DOES have a felony system (you freaking dumb@S$) “In Canada, criminal law is enacted by Parliament in Ottawa. The criminal law defines offences, including traditional categories such as assault, murder, robbery, to newer offences involving computers, organized crime, and terrorism. In Canada, if the crime charged is quite serious (called an “Indictable Offence” in Canada and akin to the U.S. “Felony”)”

So why dont you go change your diaper and let the adults who know what they are talking about actually speak. Jeeze the stupidity in here gets younger and younger every day!

  41. common sense
    July 24th, 2008 | 20:19

@40…PUH-LEAZE. n00b is a word that has been entered into the slang terms in websters, so I guess that I am correct in this. “ya” is also a slang term in Websters New World Dictionary so I am correct in that as well. So xbrewcrewx, the only hypocrit I see here is you who lets your mouth run before your brain kicks in.

42 yes I know what he is saying, but I also read the SF newspapers on line and they are saying something completely different then what he is claiming. Seems this dweeb was very nasty to his co-workers (and if this is the case then he cannot whine and cry about how they treated him) And it clearly shows he went off the deep end when his supposed “evil supervisors” actually tried to get others in to help and give him some much deserved time off. Since this is shown by repeated reports on his conduct in his file (and yes they can show this as he opened it up to allow them when he claimed that they caused this, they now have the right to refute his charges even if that means showing slips where he was wrote up for his actions)

So it clearly shows that there is another side to this then his and by the mounting evidence against him, I will bet that he will be receiving a nice long time to cool his heels at the the grey bar hotel down state from Frisco. And I will also bet that when he gets out of prison, that he will be lucky to get a job washing dishes or sweeping floors. he has no one to blame but himself and it saddens me to see all the idiots that are cheering him on. Want to bet that they would not be cheering so loudly if they were walking in his shoes right now?
