    How ironic…

cracking a short span serial and user name is way different then cracking 256bit encryption.. very nice release encrypting the whole drive would take the feds years to crack your drive should they take your machine.. grand release..

I’ll put it into simple terms that even you can understand. Okay you know that pedo collection you have on your drive? Well this nifty little tool will make it almost impossible for someone without the correct authentication to take a look at it without your permission.Basically it scrambles the bits and bytes on your hard drive.

ok so after i managed to figure out the weird ass unzipping/unraring stuff, It was on to step 2 of setting this stuff up. normally i would say i’m pretty good at figuring stuff out but I just couldnt for this one. First it wants a .dks file for its encryption which i couldnt find, so i just randomly made one and tried to use it, and then it goes on to tell me that i can use a picture or audio to save my keys in. So i go with a pic, and i finally get to the program control panel where it asks for a whole new file this time with a .dk extension. someone help me out im confuzzled, i already uninstalled it once, but i’ll get it again if someone helps.

    Thanks.

Oh and one more thing ….

    No Backdoors present
DriveCrypt does NOT include any backdoor. Encrypted data are only accessible by the legitimate users. Neither the vendor nor any other entities are able to break DriveCrypt disk encryption.

Encrypting your disks is a smart thing to do. I currently have PGP Desktop to encrypt the booting partition and Truecrypt (open source) to encrypt everything else. Will try this one too.

Hasn’t anyone here heard of truecrypt? It’s free, open source, and probably much better than this one. If you’re using vista, you won’t need this anymore, you can even encrypt your whole boot/windows partition, should you want to.

get BestCrypt Volume Encryption, it’s much better than the rest (especially PGP WDE), supports encryption of Raid disks, allows you to mount an encrypted partitions from another computer (unlike PGP where your partitions are fcked up should you lose your C: partition), etc.

i’m using truecrypt too for about 1,5 years, it never disappointed me. one click automount of three external hardrives (same password but different encryption(twofish and blowfish)) – over 1TB encrypted data, used every day. comment 18 already said it: open source, free. available for other OS as well and fast enough for me :) . you can even use files as a “password”, for example your favourite picture that you carry on your usb stick. trycrypt also has “hidden volumes”, where a ecrypted volume is hidden in another encrypted volume – you have one real password and one “fake” password which you could give someone who forces you to. learn more about it @ http://www.truecrypt.org

    August 16th, 2007 | 16:46

    @ gerben

truecrypt needs an extra programm to encrypt the OS (who knows were all your programs save e.g. their filehistory which allready might be enough to get you into trouble)

Vistas BitLocker is great, but still useless since you either need a notebook with TPM-Chip (in that case it is somewhat usefull since you then can use a short Pin) or an USB-Stick with a Keyfile (but if eg the police will search your flat they’ll verry likely find your USB-stick too).
Since the only other method to “identify” yourself is a 48 digit number-code which IMHO noone can remember (plus to enter it via the F-Keys isn’t something one would like do do every day in the first place) the whole thing is IMHO useless (which is _verry_ annoying since appart from the Password/-phrase fuckup M$ actually did a good job e.g. by supporting dualboot)

So one still needs Tools like PGP or drivecrypt if you really whant do feel safe with Truecrypt.

    S

PS: the only alternative would be to access your encrypted data just through an encryptet VM – but that’s not allways possible (3d-Performance) and in no way as comfotable and transparent as PGP or Drivecrypt

Also a Truecrypt fan. Have used it for 2 weeks and its working great. just mount and go.
Not sure about the OS though. I really dont need to encrypt my OS so never though about that.
Anyway i cant figure out how Vista is suppose to do it. When i go to the bitlocker it says i need to have 2 partitions and there are no programs in windows that can do it for me unless i reinstall i think which i dont want to do. Although i have 2 disks so if it was smart it could have encrypted C and put what it needs without encyption on D.
    ———
One partition is for the operating system drive (typically drive C) that BitLocker will encrypt, and one is for the active partition, which must remain unencrypted to start the computer. The size of the active partition must be at least 1.5 gigabytes (GB).

its wrong that there is no backdoor.
the tool has an internal masterkey although its prohibited in several countries, cause of its nice encryption – but that masterkey suxxs. so, don’t feel as secure as it wants you fell :)

the only nice aspect is the preBoot-Passwordprotection, when you have annoying little brothers ;)

if your paranoid & wanna encrypt the OS, use vmware and put the vmware virtual HD on a truecrypt partition, preferrably on your usb drive

    and off you go.

ps, use truecrypt instead of this program.

  33. s
    August 18th, 2007 | 07:57

    @ droblmenan

with default settings vmware saves some temp info in the temp-file of the main OS which may be enough to get you busted. This can easily be deactivated, but you first have to know about the issue.
But appart from the lack of decent 3d Performance in the VM, the hole thing is in no way as comfortable as a sollution using tools like drivecrypt.

    S

PS: If you are really paranoid you have to use PGP to encrypt the OS, since appart from some code of the installer everybody can dl their entire sourcecode (PGP is nearly as OS as Truecrypt)

Why do people post when they have no idea what they talk about and why do people start to talk about vmware and truecrypt. Drivecrypt pluspack or dcpp is not the same as truecrypt at all. Truecrypt create containers and is NOT a full disk encryption program. If you want to store some documents that should be encrypted or want to hide some porn from your mom truecrypt is a nice program. If you need to encrypt everything and it should be transparent (you won’t notice any difference compared to no encryption software) dcpp can do that which truecrypt cannot.
Several people/companies have higher requirements then be able to store a couple of documents that have to be stored in a specific location to be encrypted. With dcpp you don’t have to think about where you store things and what is encrypted since everything is encrypted. There are a lot of traces in windows as well in temp folders, history and stuff like that you have to worry about with truecrypt. Also bitlocker as some started to talk about have some requirements that don’t suit everyone like unless you thought about encryption during the installation of Vista you cannot use bitlocker (at least not without lot of hassle). Bitlocker require a 2 GB partition that is unencrypted as well to be able to boot. Also the requirements for TPM and the fact that most people don’t use Vista yet is something to think about. Dcpp can be applied after OS installation without any hassle, data loss or partition change and the whole disk can be encrypted. If serious errors should occur dcpp have recovery tools as well since normal repair tools cannot read the encrypted volume, but I been using dcpp for several years and it’s very stable and never caused problems for me.
When someone start to talk about vmware/truecrypt for encryption that is just silly. Dcpp have almost no performance loss…..I wonder how fast your applications in a vmware image that is stored inside a encrypted truecrypt container will run. Also it would require a lot of ram on that computer and the stuff inside vmware will run very slow. Also some apps just don’t work very well under vmware. This would be useless and it’s no rocket science to understand that. Using vmware and truecrypt like described in a post here is one of the silliest suggestions I ever heard. Only idiots can compare this solution to dcpp.
Also when some talk about backdoors…..there is no existing proof that someone managed to break the disk encryption used by dcpp. Securstar even had a contest and offered $100000 if someone managed to break into a system using dcpp. No one managed to break it. There is no masterkey or hidden backdoor….this is just bs from some really paranoid fools that choose to not trust anything, love conspiracy theories and talk about things they don’t know anything about. They have no proof of those silly statements and unless you can actually show some proofs you should keep the silly theory to yourself.
Dcpp have no internal masterkey, but have an optional masterkey that can be used. That optional masterkey is for IT departments if the user forgets the password so the data can be retrieved. Without that masterkey and forgotten user password the contents of the disk is lost. But this is optional to use and not a known internal static masterkey as some idiot here claim. The masterkey is basically just another user defined password for the IT department to use in addition to the user password that the user of the computer uses.
A company like securstar would never risk their reputation by creating a backdoor and such a backdoor would be a huge security hole that someone will find out how to use sooner or later.
Dcpp also got several other feature like central management, keylogger protection, brute-force protection and other stuff that make dcpp a very good encryption program that is known to be very secure by people that know what they talk about.
Truecrypt and vmware is nice products, but it’s used for a different purpose. Before someone claim that dcpp is useless, got backdoors, cannot compare to truecrypt and other silly statements they should check the facts first and actually know something about the software.
For those that still don’t understand why people could buy dcpp or similar products when truecrypt is free this is two products used for different purpose and has different features. If that is not possible to understand you shouldn’t try to tell other people what software to use since that requires some knowledge you just don’t have.
The usage of encryption software doesn’t always have to do with paranoia. It’s about securing your data and for a lot of companies it’s critical to protect. Especially since that data is often stored on a laptop that could easily be stolen.

Using regedit check if the “DCPPaid” (C:\WINDOWS\system32\DCPPaid.exe /P) exist under “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run”. If existing try to delete this key and also delete the file “DCPPaid.exe” from windows\system32 to see if that remove the trial info box.
