It is quite funny how we English are so defensive of "our" language and its proper use when it is such an inconsistent jumble of a language anyway.

Very few English people speak a pure form of the language (Received Pronunciation; most are dialectic forms, with social, regional and class influences.

can you explain then why the rest of you pronounce this word as "shed-ual" instead of the proper way of "sked-ual"? Just because you have done something this way all your life does not make your way the final word on the subject.

Yes – the British pronunciation ("shed-yul") is from French influence, while the U.S. pronunciation ("sked-yul") is from the practice of Webster, and is based on the Greek original. Neither is more "proper"; both are valid.

That's not the reason English contains words from other languages but you're right… every group mould and adapt language to suit their own needs to communicate.

As opposed to the British ridiculous spelling of Aluminum with an extra "i" because they wanted to simulate the spelling of Helium. Or the insistence on maintaining the French-style of spelling theater and color. Please check your prejudices at the door if you don't know the history of the language. It speaks only to bigotry.

The Americans don't speak English and never have,they have their own langauge-its called American.All cultures mould and adapt language to suit their own needs.Which is why "English" contains French,German and many European words.

@13, how obtuse. How do you know that the Americans do not spell the words correctly and YOU are the ones making the mistakes in spelling for all these years? Just as there are different meanings for words, there are different ways to say it. For instance, the word schedule. That word clearly has a "c" in it with a lower class therefor it makes a "cuh" sound. Since it never has appeared in neither the American nor the British dictionaries with any marks to indicate that the "c" was silent..can you explain then why the rest of you pronounce this word as "shed-ual" instead of the proper way of "sked-ual"?
